Episode 545: Lee Lyttle, RSSW. The Courage of The Wounded Healer

Statistics show there are more than 45 million survivors of child sexual abuse in North America and that one in five boys on this continent are sexually abused before age 18.  The experience can unleash a bitter struggle for connection, and it can leave survivors grappling with a debilitating fallout that ranges from alcoholism and drug addiction to mental illness and a general failure to thrive.

Author Lee Lyttle brings hope for healing to millions of broken families through his lyrical memoir, Wounded Healer. The book unveils the profound yet raw story of Lyttle?s journey through childhood sexual trauma and the debilitating experiences as an alcoholic that eventually followed. He tracks the shattering feelings of isolation and bitterness that haunted his days, along with his conscious mind?s demanding desire to numb his memories of the hideous day when his innocence was stolen from him.

Episode 544: Damon Wood, PhD. The Journey of a Prison Psychologist

Dr. Damon Wood is back on the podcast.

Damon was my guest on episode 400 of The Trauma Therapist | Podcast in which we talked about safety within the prison setting.

Today, however, he?s back to share a personal story, about why he decided to leave working within the prison system. I think you?ll find this episode enlightening as Damon talks about his struggle and the conflict he had with his decision to leave and yet the love he had for his colleagues. He also talks about the push and pull therapists sometimes feel between working with a group of professionals as opposed to working in private practice.

?My mission is to empower people to live the life they deeply desire.?

?In her therapy practice, Kelly specializes in working with trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She has been trained in social work, trauma-informed care, and Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR). She spent many years working with immigrant and refugee populations from various countries and cultures. Episode 530: Gunny Sodhi. Ayurveda & A Journey of Healing

Gunny Sodhi?s family roots in Ayurvedic medicine stretch across generations, but he didn?t personally understand the power of Ayurveda until tragedy struck. The sudden death of his 16-year-old brother completely changed the course of his life, setting him on an unexpected path of self-discovery.

Following his brother?s passing, Gunny was consumed by debilitating panic attacks and bouts of deep depression. Diagnosed with PTSD and desperate for relief, he found no comfort in traditional Western therapy. He was lost.

It was at that point that Gunny would rediscover his roots. On the advice of his family, he began supplementing his diet with Ashwagandha and other time-tested Ayurvedic remedies. Meditation and yoga became daily practices. Within six weeks, his anxiety faded and his depression lifted.

Gunny had experienced the healing potential of Mother Nature first-hand and, in doing so, found a new purpose. Out of a desire to help change people?s lives the way his life had been changed, YouVeda was born.

Its mission is simple: produce the best Ayurvedic products on the planet. By tapping into the intelligence of Mother Nature, Gunny has found a way to honor the memory of his brother while helping others on their own journeys toward healing and happiness.

She works with audiences internationally to create a compassionate understanding of the effects of relational trauma on the brain, and writes about and teaches people how words change and heal us.

Her special interest is the way that difficult events impact our automatic brain patterning, and how to transform our tendencies toward self-criticism into self-warmth. Her first book is titled, Your Resonant Self: Guided Meditations and Exercises to Engage Your Brain?s Capacity for Healing.

Your Resonant Self Workbook: From Self-sabotage to Self-care takes us through the world of relational neuroscience and, using the lens of unconscious contracts, explores how our brains, nervous systems, and bodies react to the brains, nervous systems, and bodies of others.

This workbook provides the tools to turn inward with kindness, warmth, and curiosity and create opportunities for self-healing.

Episode 524: Kari Gleiser, PhD. Using Emotion To Heal

I think this is one of the most inspiring interviews I?ve done. Again, not because of me, but due to my guest and how she works with clients. In this interview we?ll learn about AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) and the emphasis on being in the moment, and naming the experiences that are happening between the client and therapist. This calls for authenticity from the therapist as well as creativity. And each of these things excite and inspire me! I hope you enjoy this one.

Kari Gleiser is a clinical psychologist in Hanover, NH, specializing in the treatment of complex trauma and dissociative disorders. She is a senior faculty member at the AEDP Institute and co-founder/co-director of the Center for Integrative Health.  Keri has developed a relational model that incorporates AEDP into work with dissociative disorders, and dissociative parts of the self, called Intra-relational AEDP.

Judy is a yoga teacher living in South Florida who has gained wide recognition for her unique ability to guide her teachers and students to achieve their full potential. In 2007, Judy met Beau MacVane, a strapping 6?4? Army Ranger, who after returning home from his fifth tour of duty in Iraq, contracted Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig?s Disease.

Beau asked Judy to teach him yoga so he could stay as strong and connected to his body as humanly possible as he fought his terminal illness.

Over the next several years Judy watched in awe as Beau was able to use her instruction, and his determination, to battle the decline of his physical body. What arose was a mental focus and a self-awareness that changed them both.

When Beau passed away, surrounded by his loving family and friends, he left with a peace of mind more powerful than any physical limitation. Judy?s passion in offering her skill to the military is dedicated to the Warrior Spirit of Beau MacVane and his family.

Episode 505: Catherine E. Sims, LLC. Trauma Therapy As A Calling

Catherine is a multi-state Licensed Professional Counselor (OR, DC, NY) and private practice owner, who specializes in trauma counseling and human sexuality. In addition to her clinical work, she teaches several masters-level supervisory classes and works as an adjunct faculty member at The Family Institute of Northwestern University.

Catherine?s 10+ year career has afforded her the opportunity to develop integral clinical and administrative skills, a clear ethical code, strong cultural competency, and a supervisory style that is supportive, collaborative, and strength-based. She started her career working in social services, landed an international position (Saudi Arabia) as a Psychology Instructor, and ultimately found her way to Washington DC, where she started her practice.

Catherine strongly believes that trauma-informed care is underrepresented and that awareness and understanding need to be spread and taught.

Episode 503: Jill Shanteau, LCSW & Jessica Culp, LPC. Trauma Therapy in The Time of COVID

Jill Shanteau, LCSW & Jessica Culp, LPC. Trauma Therapy in The Time of COVID

This one has been a long time coming. Today I?m honored to be joined by two long-time Trauma Therapist | 2.0 members, Jill Shanteau and Jessica Culp.

Jill and Jessica met through the membership a few years ago and have continued to remain in contact. Today they share their experiences of what it?s been like to deliver therapy within the context of COVID while still attempting to stay healthy and sane!

Jill Shanteau, LCSW

Jill is employed as a therapist at the Harry S Truman VA in Columbia, Missouri. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Life Science from Kansas State University and a Master's Degree in Social Work from Washburn University. While Jill always endeavored to be a therapist, it wasn't until 2014, after facing some personal and family challenges, that she relocated from Virginia to Missouri and began taking the steps to eventually earn full clinical licensure in 2017.

As a former Department of the Army civilian employee at The Pentagon, Jill became intimately familiar with the struggles that service members face as they return from deployment or make the challenging transition from the military into the civilian community. Now with five years of experience at Veterans Affairs, Jill has spent a majority of her social work career serving service members, veterans, and  their families.

Jill is married and enjoys spending time with her husband and son. She is an avid Brene Brown fan, having relished the opportunity to once shake the author's hand. Jill is a former Eagle Leader Fellow and Chapter Captain and a current volunteer for Team Red, White, and Blue (Team RWB), an organization that seeks to enrich the lives of America's veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity. She loves to learn and can often be found reading several books at the same time or listening to various trauma-related podcasts. She has been a member of the Trauma Therapist 2.0 since November 2016.

Jessica Culp, LPC

Jessica, MA, LPC, is a licensed trauma counselor at Steadfast Center LLC in Champaign, Illinois and a 2018 masters of counseling graduate from Lincoln Christian University. Steadfast Center LLC specializes in helping individuals heal from relational and complex trauma.

This is Jessica?s second career, after receiving her Bachelor?s degree in Communications in 2003 and working in the marketing and resource development field for three local nonprofit organizations that included a food bank, a children?s home, and a crisis nursery.

Jessica has been listening to the Trauma Therapist Podcast since she began her studies in counseling in September of 2015, and joined  Trauma Therapist 2.0 in December 2016.

Episode 502: Luke Worsfold. Inside Addiction

Today?s episode is about taking your experience and using it to help those who?ve been impacted by trauma.

My guest today is Luke Worsfold. Luke grew up with a drug-addicted mother who died when he was 10. The experience of her death caused severe trauma throughout Luke?s life, which led to Luke?s own drug addiction. When Luke realized that he, himself, was heading towards his own death, it was in that moment that he decided to make a commitment to become the best version of myself and lead others by example.

Luke has since founded Lisa, Inside Addiction, a treatment center to help individuals with substance abuse problems.
