10 Aviation Commandments ? AviatorCast 158

For some, aviation is a religion. Not sure that's good or bad, but it is what it is. There is something spiritual about flying, so it makes sense. I came up with 10 Aviation Commandments, most of them fairly 'serious' and spot on. They're mostly safety-related, but many are related to growing and improving as an aviator. Without spoiling too much, they are... THOU SHALT BE SAFE THOU SHALT AVIATE, NAVIGATE, COMMUNICATE ? IN ORDER THOU SHALT FIGHT HAZARDOUS ATTITUDES THOU SHALT STRIVE FOR PROFESSIONALISM THOU SHALT PAY IT FORWARD THOU SHALT BE A FOREVER STUDENT THOU SHALT HAVE FUN ALONG THE WAY THOU SHALT CHOOSE A GOOD SCHOOL & INSTRUCTOR THOU SHALT NOT GET DISCOURAGED THOU SHALT MAKE A PILGRIMAGE TO AIRVENTURE Come join for this podcast and enjoy some good insight.

Hope you enjoy these questions that I?m about to answer for all sorts of different areas of fight training. Today it seems like there?s a little bit more of an emphasis on affordability of flight training, on commercial training, on passing Checkrides and building time, which are fairly typical questions, but that?s a lot of what we get in today in addition to some other things along the way. So thank you for being here and make sure to subscribe, like this video and join the conversation here in the comments. Really appreciate you being here. Come back every Monday, ask a question on Instagram where I do this live and we will have this good time together where you can learn something new every single week here on the Angle of Attack channel. So thanks for being here, let?s get right into it. So, instrument rating, how do you keep everything straight in your head? So the instrument flying is pretty interesting because there are so many precise technical details about where you are and where you?re flying that you need to be obviously on top of those things because we?re flying to a greater precision in instrument flying. So really it?s important to take notes on clearances you get and things that you need to remember. It?s important to even take notes on say your instrument approach, play, highlight them, things like that. In ForeFlight for example. There is a way to highlight your approach plates and find the areas that are the most important. And of course you can brief them there as well. You can put those on top, GL reference on top of the map. And then in terms of you, which is the most important part, you just staying ahead of things and being on top of things that just comes with practice. So those things that you could forget and could throw you off, like stuff that?s on the charts and clearances you get, those are things to write down,

Stupid-proof Your Flying with Aviation Safety ? AviatorCast 137

https://youtu.be/wz7qEGln8g4 What is the biggest liability we have as pilots, in our support of aviation safety? It's OURSELVES. We are the ultimate decision makers. If we don't make good choices, then bad things happen while flying. That's why we need to stupid-proof our flying as much as possible, in the name of aviation safety. In this podcast we will discuss: Why getting your head right FIRST, NEXT and LAST is the most important thing you can do. How Checklists help keep us pilots in check. Why habits, gouges and routines are essential in a fast paced environment. How using recurrent training can make your skills skyrocket. As a pilot I hope you're always seeking to make better decisions, because your life and the lives of others depend on it. It's simply part of our being as pilots to reach for that higher way of flying. Episode Transcript On this episode of AviatorCast, Stupid Proof Your Flying for Aviation Safety. Welcome, aviators, to another episode of AviatorCast. Load up your flight bag with useful flight training topics, interviews and aviation passion. Let?s kick the tires and light the fires. Coming to you from Angle of Attack headquarters in Homer, Alaska, here?s your host and flight instructor, Chris Palmer. Welcome, aviators, to another episode of AviatorCast. My name is Chris Palmer, coming to you from Homer, Alaska. Great to have you here. Hope you?re well. Hope you are working toward your aviation goals here for a little bit more information, inspiration, and just a step forward in this podcast today. So I thought of a topic of talking about like stupid proofing your flying, and some ways that we can build some routines, some checklists, some mindset into stupid proofing what we do, because at the end of the day, a lot of us have tendencies to do stupid things, and I think that?s just the human condition, right? That?s generally what we are always trying to do. So in aviation, we watch out for ourselves that way, make sure that we are trying to keep the ultimate safety. So we are going to talk about in this particular podcast why getting your head right first, next and last is the most important thing you can do. That goes to human factors, that goes to that important decision making. Also being introspective, and knowing what you?re thinking and feeling, and how that plays out to aviation safety. How checklists help keep us pilots in check, also why habits, gouges, and routines are essential in a fast paced environment, and how using recurrent training can make your skills skyrocket. So let?s just dive right in and go through several of these and have a discussion. So first off is the mindset stuff. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. Kind of a funny saying that my wife says every now and again. Now, one thing I talk about every now and again is that humility is one of the traits that we certainly need as pilots. We know that there are hazardous attitudes out there that we learn about when we do flight training, and they are certainly true, they are present. We have all of them to a certain degree or another. We have several of them most, so you?d have to identify what those are. We?re talking about those things like resignation, anti-authority, invulnerability, macho. One I came up with was know-it-all, and there?s several others that I?m forgetting off the top of my head. But those things that are kind of human nature that we tend to gravitate toward as an attitude towards certain things. So those are called, again, hazardous attitudes. You probably heard of them before, but the biggest thing we can do for aviation safety, for stupid proofing our flying, is to have humility. And this goes back to one of the core beliefs I have, even when it comes to aviation accidents, is that I never place myself as being better or more professional than the pilot that had made the mistake. So what I do is I rather take a step back and ask myself, ?What would it take for me to get in that situation a...

This is another episode of motivation Monday where I answer questions live for you in the community about flight training, the aviation careers that you may be getting into, any technical stuff that you?re going through on your written tests or your online ground school, and this is just a place to kind of gather all those information, all those questions every Monday and just kind of give you my candid thoughts, my candid advice on those subjects. So you?re going to find a lot of information here. Those are searchable down below in the description, and so if you just want to search for something that?s applicable to you, you can click the time code and that?ll jump you ahead to that point in the video. Also, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe, share. Please be part of this community. Comment. I?d love to hear from you and continue on the conversation, and great to have you here. So hope that some of these questions are things that you have as well and they do become helpful. Enjoy this motivation Monday. This question, what do you think of programs like Sheppard Air for the written test? So Sheppard Air is this very popular written test preparation software that?s out there and really it?s literally wrote memorization for the written test. I?ve done it before myself for the CFII test. That?s the only one I?ve done it for and it was very effective in pulling out the questions that were going to be on the test, the block that they were currently working with, but the limitation to the Sheppard Air is it?s kind of like a shortcut or a hack that a lot of people are using instead of actually doing the full knowledge study of the subject that they?re in, and so I think it is a good program to get in the high nineties for your test, however, it is not something to use to study for your test. In other words, you need to be going through and doing the knowledge in a true thorough ground school, and then if you really want to polish it off as something like Sheppard Air, you?re more than welcome to do that. I think for the most part it?s unnecessary, and what I?ve noticed is that most people are confusing it with actual study of the written test material, the knowledge you need for a certain discipline, and they?re using that instead of ? they?re using Sheppard Air instead of doing the hard work. I don?t think that benefits anyone longterm and so I?m kind of against it in a way, but definitely if you have put in the work and you just want that little extra nudge to get a slightly better score, then Sheppard Air is something good to go with.

In Motivation Monday, I answer your flight training and aviation career questions and anything else you?re going through or need to know or need help on in your journey to becoming a pilot and an aviator. So feel free to jump into this particular episode here. See the questions that I answered this week. However, on Sunday nights and Monday mornings go to Instagram and enter your questions in there because I will answer them live on the air and then post them here. So just trying to help you guys out in the community. And so I?ll see you inside. Let?s go and answer some questions that you guys have. Do you offer private pilot instrument and commercial flight training? And when can I start? So I actually do have a flight school here in Alaska. It used to be called Aviator Training but it?s just Angle of Attack. So if you?re ever in town, if you?re ever visiting Alaska, I?m open for business. I take people up and fly on the mountains, and you can do a little mountain flying course. Or if you are looking for different flight training, then I can offer certain things at my school. It?s basically just me in a 172, but I have a lot of fun and get to do a lot of great things here in a beautiful area. So if that?s ever anything you?re looking forward to and maybe you want to find a place to train elsewhere, then I do real flight training. Like me coming on this live here. It?s one thing to be someone that talks online and does all that stuff. I have an online ground school and I share a lot of stuff online. But I always want to be someone that?s doing the real thing because I feel like that?s going to help everything else. So I don?t want to just talk about flying. I actually want to be out there doing it. So it?s really important to me that I continue to do that, and I have that flight school. It?s a lot of fun. I really enjoy teaching. Any tips for commercial lazy eights and eights on pylons?

Join Online Ground School and Checkride ACE at https://ift.tt/35kuums Episode Transcript Hey everybody, welcome to another Motivation Monday. I am a few minutes late today. Had some sick kids up all night last night. So, I?ve been a little bit behind today getting started on everything. But here I am. I?ve got a good number of questions already in the hopper to answer for you guys. So that?s what this entire Motivation Monday is about. It?s answering your questions. I find myself counseling flights for winds aloft. How can I become more comfortable with crosswinds? And just to differentiate actually winds aloft or those winds that are at your cruising altitude. But I?m assuming what you mean by winds aloft is you just mean that the crosswinds at your airport and having the confidence to get used to your crosswind landings. And so, this is one of those areas where as private pilots, when you?re first doing your crosswind training, it?s a little tricky because you? there?s a lot going on all at once. And that changes as you?re on approach into your flare and then even into your touchdown, your control movements are changing that entire time. So, this is just one of those things that as time goes on you build more skill. And so, I think overall, this is more of a question of what? or what or how do you build your skills on a certain aspect of your flying over time. And I think with anything in aviation is basically just dipping your toes in the water here and there and testing yourself out a little bit more. Obviously, there are limits that you don?t want to exceed. In this case, that would be the crosswind component of the airplane or rather the max demonstrated crosswind component and find out what you can and can?t do. Now, there were test pilots that figured out that max crosswind component or that?s basically how they figured it out. I even heard, and I?m not sure this is true, that it wasn?t test pilots or it isn?t test pilots to figure out the crosswind component rather it?s an average pilot that does the max demonstrated crosswind component. I don?t know if that?s true or just a rumor but it is in the POH.
