Buckeyes' Christmas gift | Knowing more about Knowles | Rose Bowl motivation

Ohio State is just five days away from playing Utah in the Rose Bowl and there is much to discuss on today's show as Dave Biddle flies solo. What can be expected of him? We discuss that, plus: * We've talked a lot about Jim Knowles, who will take over as Ohio State's defensive coordinator on Jan. 2. But let's talk about him even more because this appears to be a grand slam home run of a hire. * How motivated is OSU to play in the Rose Bowl and how confident should you be in the Buckeyes this Saturday? Has Ohio State identified its coach in the secondary for next season? Possibly. The Buckeyes are exploring all talent acquisitions avenues available and these days that means a lot more than just the recruiting trail. The transfer portal is a new way of life and Ohio State is learning to live with it like all programs have to. That means possible Oklahoma State Cowboys en route alongside new Buckeyes defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. It means Ohioans who left for college possibly returning home to finish. It means a whole new world. There's nobody better to offer navigation of this new scene than Bill Kurelic. 'Biggest shift of college football in our lifetimes'

Much has changed in college football over the last year or so. Major changes that have completely shifted the landscape of the sport we live. Players being able to transfer one time without sitting out a season. Players being able to profit off their name, image and likeness, and boosters more than willing to help their favorite program reel in recruits using NIL money. While it is a good time to be a college football player, what about the sport itself? Is it as great as it always was? Even better? Worse? Too early to tell? What might the future hold? Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle for an in-depth discussion on this matter, plus we look ahead to Ohio State's Rose Bowl matchup against Utah and more. Matt Barnes to run Buckeyes' defense in future seasons too?

Ohio State's defense continues to make strides in the right direction. The Buckeyes lead the nation in sacks and have simply been better overall since Matt Barnes took over as the shot caller. If this continues, is it as simple as Ryan Day will officially promote Barnes to defensive coordinator next season? Are we getting ahead of ourselves? Of course. That's what we do around here. On the offensive side of the ball, wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is coming off one of the best performances for an OSU wide receiver in the history of the program. That's obviously excellent news. The not-so-good news is the offensive line has now struggled in back-to-back performances in the run blocking department. What is to make of the offensive moving forward this season? Also, the Buckeyes will face off against Purdue this Saturday at the Horseshoe. What are thoughts on this matchup? All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish as Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Penn State hangover? | Recruiting bonanza review

We've had a few days to think about it. What do we make of the win over Penn State? We know what the national vibe is: Ohio State was the only top 25 team to win on Saturday ... and drop in the rankings released yesterday. Ohio State won ... dropped one spot. Penn State lost ... dropped two spots. Makes sense. Duane Long is here to offer his perspective: What to make of the win? What does it mean going forward?  ALSO: Ohio State's red carpet guest list was a true stunner. Duane lets you know who he's focused on as the trail heats up down the stretch. Ohio State beat Penn State 33-24, but fell a spot in the AP poll. The rankings that really matter -- those from the College Football Playoff committee -- will be released on Tuesday. Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus: * Additional thoughts on the win over the Nittany Lions. What did we like from the Buckeyes? What did we not like? * Why is C.J. Stroud showing no willingness to run? Is that coming from the coaches, or does he simply have no interest in running?
