This is a movie that is definitely not for everybody. My wife is still mad for watching it with me. If you are opposed to graphic violence, and I do mean Graphic with a capital G this is not for you. If you are uncomfortable with a 13 year old girl taking out bad guys in the most imaginably gruesome ways possible, you will want to take a pass. But if you can imagine Kevin, in Home Alone, instead of hitting Joe Pesci in the face with a paint can on a rope, giving him a colonoscopy with a chainsaw and that doesn?t bother you, then you can put this squarely in the ?guilty pleasure? column.       The movie has an interesting start. We flash back and forth between Becky at school and a prison. As a fight is going on at school there is a fight in the prison yard. As Becky, played by Lulu Wilson, is being picked up from school by her dad Jeff, played by Joel McHale, prisoners are getting in a prisoner transport truck. The scene switches back and forth and it is really a cool effect. Becky has lost her mom to cancer and she is filled with rage about it.    To make matters worse as they arrive at their cabin on the lake they are joined by Jeff?s girlfriend Kayla, played by Amanda Brugel and her little boy Ty, played by Isaiah Rockcliffe. Then Jeff announces that they are getting married. This is more than Becky can take. She runs off into the woods to a shed where she hangs out. During this time four violent prisoners have escaped from the transport truck and they find their way to the cabin. The leader of these neo-Nazis is Dominick, played by none other than Kevin James, complete with a huge swastika tattoo on the back of his shaved head. Talk about playing against type. It may take people a few minutes to get used to Paul Blart as a cruel, manipulating, murdering Nazi. The other 3 consist of humongous Apex, played by Robert Maillet, and 2 other guys that we don?t know, and will probably never see again, who are just here for the slaughter. They are like the guys with red shirts on the Star Trek, no point in learning their names. Dominic is at this cabin for something he hid there that is of great importance to him. When he can?t find it he realizes Becky must have it and he starts torturing her dad until Becky brings it to him. Sadly for Dominic he?s been in prison with murders, robbers, deviants, and serial killers. That does not prepare someone to face a 13 year old girl Having not raised one, he has no idea that prison is not built to keep us safe from him, it is built to keep him safe from pissed off girls 13-17, the most dangerous creatures on this planet. And to make it worse he has her cell phone.       The movie is 93 minutes, Rated R for bloody violence, grisly images, I truly can?t believe what they did with an eyeball, and language. Honestly I still can?t get past the eyeball.       This is the first dramatic role for Kevin James, much less playing a neo-Nazi. Some people may not be able to see past the other characters he has played, but from the first scene of him in the prison yard, I was sold. But as good as he was, Lulu Wilson was fantastic. She is headed for way bigger things than this low budget revenge movie.       If you like a revenge movie that is really graphic you?ll like this. If you are squeamish, just skip it and watch Toy Story or something.   My Score: 4 Budweisers Learn more about your ad choices. The Wrong Missy       I?m switching it up this week. Instead of telling you what you don?t want to miss, I?m pointing out what you might want to avoid. I had seen this movie pop up on Netflix with David Spade wearing a trucker hat which was a solid signal not to click on it. Turns out there is even worse news about The Wrong Missy, it is a Happy Madison Production, which means Adam Sandler. My opinion had started to change about Adam Sandler after watching Uncut Gems. But with The Wrong Missy he is right back in familiar territory.       The movie opens up with Tim, played by David Spade going into a bar to meet a blind date. Instead of a meet cute, it?s more like a meet awkward. His date Missy, played by Lauren Lapkus, comes across like a psychopath, who actually has a humongous Bowie knife in her purse. The date just keeps getting worse and worse until Tim makes a break for it out of the bathroom window. He swears off dating and concentrates on getting a promotion that is coming open at work.    A few months later while on a business trip he literally bumps into a girl named Melissa, played by Molly Sims, and they get their bags mixed up. They get to talking and find out they have much in common. Neither one drinks, they both love Phil Collins, they are both reading the same novel, and they both were cheated on by their former mates. They wind up making out in a storage room and swap phone numbers. He starts texting her when he gets back home. He decides to ask her to go to the company retreat. He has told everyone about her and can?t wait to show her off. But wait, Tim doesn?t realize he has been texting the crazy blind date nightmare until they are on the plane. Missy is the exact opposite of boring Tim. She is a hard drinker, huge partier, a licensed marriage counselor, hypnotist, EMT, palm reader, and a few more things. She ruins his life, and then makes it better than it was. I?m sure you can guess the rest of the formula.       Exactly 90 minutes, Rated TV Mature, tons of cussing, some sexual references with 2 sex scenes.       Sadly there might have been a good comedy here   but the writing is very lazy. But not as lazy as David Spade?s performance. A cardboard standup would have had more personality. David Spade is not without talent, he was great in Just Shoot Me. He just didn?t show up in this. Now Lauren Lapkus is another story. She gave this movie everything she had, and then some. She was completely fearless in her performance, but was hampered with the lazy writing. I would love to see her get a really good part with some really good writing. But if this movie puts her in Adam Sandler?s circle she might be stuck and never get out.       Speaking of that circle, in this movie was his usual buddies and most of his family. Rob Schneider, Nick Swardson of Bucky Larson fame, Adam?s wife Jackie, his two daughters, a nephew, and Chris Farley?s younger brother John. He also manages to pull off a Vanilla Ice Cameo. The first third had some promise, but it goes downhill fast all the way to underwater mermaid talking. At that point I was already out.       My Score: 2 Buds Learn more about your ad choices. I was really afraid that this was going to be one of those movies where the all funny scenes were in the trailer and none in the movie. Much to my surprise that was not the case.    The movie stars Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as Lelani and Jibran. It opens up with the morning after the first night they had spent together. It has the awkwardness of departing the one night stand but takes a different turn in a really cute way. It looks like this is destined to be the greatest romance in romantic comedy history. Then we flash forward to four years later. It seems that all those endearing idiosyncrasies that were so cute at first, have turned into irritating habits and personality traits that have them headed for a breakup. The latest blowup starts out as a disagreement on whether or not they could win the Amazing Race and winds up with a fight about whether an orgy has to be planned or can it be spontaneous. On their way to a party they are right in the middle of the breakup when they hit a guy on a bike. As they are discussing what to do he jumps up and rides off.    A guy claiming to be a cop commandeers their car, chases the guy down and runs over him, with them in the car. After making sure he?s dead the guy runs off leaving them at the scene. They are sure they will be charged with murder and they run. The only way to prove their innocence is to solve the crime.       The movie is a perfect 86 minutes, Rated R for sexual content, language, and some violence.       The chemistry could not have been better between Lelani and Jibran. By far the physical jokes and setups, although most of them worked, were not near as funny as the dialog between the two. My favorite line in the whole movie was when during their investigation they stopped by the party they were originally going to. Someone looks at Jibran and says ?you got blood on your face.? And he responds, deadpan, ?It?s a big disgrace.? That is hilarious. I?m still laughing at that.       This is certainly not When Harry Met Sally or Pretty Woman, but it ain?t Gigli either. I really didn?t know what to expect but I sat down with Carla to watch it.    This is not rolling on the floor laughing, but their chemistry is infectious. Infectious in a good way, not a ?pandemicy? way. We enjoyed the banter between them and enough of the jokes worked that it was an extremely enjoyable 86 minutes. It might not have been quite as enjoyable had we paid $20 in tickets, and $30 at the concession counter. But you?ve already got Netflix, there?s probably peanut butter in your pantry, and unless you are from another planet, some Ritz crackers. Lather up some of those crackers with some Jif, get you something to drink and have at it. You can pause if you need to go to the bathroom, or back it up if you miss something. If you don?t like it as much as we did, Netflix has a gazillion shows and movies, switch it to something else. You?re still ahead of the game.       My Score: 4 Budweisers   Learn more about your ad choices. Dead to Me   This is another winner from Netflix winner that I probably would not have seen if my wife hadn?t kept talking about people telling her about it. I do like Cristina Applegate and have been watching her since Married with Children. She has turned out to be a fantastic actor that just keeps getting better. I also like Linda Cardellini who is also in it.   This is one of those reviews where I really can?t tell you anything. I can give the big picture, but no details. I urge you to be careful if you read about this show because the less you know, the better off you are. Cristina Applegate plays Jen, a really uptight real estate agent living in California. She has two boys and has just lost her husband to a hit-and-run driver. She is really sad, very mad, and completely frustrated because not only has she lost her husband, it seems like the police are not working hard enough to find the person who ran him down. In desperation she has joined a grief counseling group. There she meets a hippie woman around her age named Judy, played by Linda Cardellini. They could not be more different.  Judy is a free spirit, so calm and not a care in the world. Jen is wound as tight as a two-dollar watch. Jen winds up spilling her guts to Judy and winds up moving her into the guest house.  If that were all this show was about it would be well worth watching. But wait! There?s more! There are secrets. Judy has secrets, Jen has secrets, Jen?s dead husband has secrets, and so does just about every character in this show. So while we are captivated by the raw emotions that Jen and Judy share, and we are entertained by the funny back and forth between them, we are intensely trying to solve the multiple mysteries that keep being uncovered.  Those mysteries we are dying to know the answer is what makes us click next episode instead of turning off the TV. The show is designed for binge watching. You know, like crack cocaine and meth are designed for repeat sales.   Each episode is 30 minutes, Rated R for language. 10 episodes in a season. Both seasons are on Netflix.   This is an awesome show that is dramatic, extremely funny, and a thriller at the same time. Especially if you are past 40 and lived through some things.   My Score: A solid 5 Budweisers Learn more about your ad choices. The Gentlemen   When I first saw the trailer for The Gentlemen it didn?t catch my attention. That was until I found out it was a Guy Ritchie movie. I?m not going to say that all of them are as good as Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch, but I don?t think I?ve watched one that I hated. I will admit I was more than a little disappointed in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, which also had Charlie Hunnam in it. Since this had Matthew McConaughey in it I had to check it out.   Matthew McConaughey plays Mickey, an American living in London who is a marijuana kingpin that considers himself the king of the jungle, and evidently is. He has reached a point where he has made his money and now wants to live the life of a somewhat respectable gentleman with his wife Rosalind, played by Michelle Dockery. He is ready to sell his entire enterprise for $400 million pounds to Matthew, another American, played by Jeremy Strong. This is complicated by an aspiring Chinese gangster named Dry Eye, played by Henry Golding and the man he works for, Lord George, played by Tom Wu. They figure if they cause Mickey enough trouble in his business they might be able to buy it for a lot less. On a side note, there is a rumor that Henry Golding is a possible replacement for Daniel Craig as James Bond. In the movie Dry Eye is referred to as a Chinese James Bond.   The way the story is unfolded to the audience is by watching a tabloid reporter named Fletcher, played by Hugh Grant, lay out his blackmail scheme to Mickey?s consiglieri Ray, played by Charlie Hunnam. Fletcher has been tracking Mickey and his pot business for an article he is selling to newspaper owner that Mickey ticked off. Along the way he has discovered all kinds of illegal activity including some murders that will ruin Mickey. As Fletcher tells Ray the story the audience sees it in flashbacks. A really interesting character in the movie is Coach, played by Colin Farrell. He is a boxing coach, and his batch of students are up for anything including illegal activities.   The movie is 113 minutes, Rated R for violence, and language, language, language, sexual references and drug content. I can?t stress the language thing enough. They don?t miss a word, especially that word that everybody hates, the C-word. The count is 25 times but it seemed like twice that because of how that word is viewed in America. While we were watching it, Carla kept saying ?What is the deal with constantly saying that?? Evidently it is different in England, over there it?s no big deal.    As far as Matthew McConaughey, he was awesome! Mickey was as cool as I?ve ever seen him. I?m talking driving down the road in a Lincoln, drinking a Wild Turkey 101, smelling like Dolce & Gabbana, and naked with a set of bongos in the passenger seat cool. And Ray, played by Charlie Hunnam was not far behind.   This is an old school Guy Ritchie movie 100% and if you like that then you know what to expect and you won?t be disappointed. If you are looking for anything else, this might not be for you.   My Score: 4 Budweisers  Learn more about your ad choices.
