SENSITIVE TOPIC WARNING: This episode discusses disordered eating, insulin restriction, and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). If you or someone you love is struggling with disordered eating or insulin restriction, please seek support from a qualified healthcare professional.
Insulin restriction is not a safe or effective method for weight loss. It can lead to severe hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), DKA, hospitalization, and life-threatening complications and should never be encouraged as a weight-loss strategy.
--
In this episode of The Diabetes Nerd Podcast, I sit down with Carly Lynette, a 21-year-old diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at age 3, to talk candidly about her experience with disordered eating, insulin restriction, and recovery.
Carly shares how concerns about food, body image, and weight eventually led her to restrict insulin for several years, resulting in severe chronic high blood sugar, repeated episodes of DKA, hospitalizations, isolation, and significant impacts on her health and education. She also discusses the decision that helped her begin moving forward and the challenges of maintaining recovery.
We also talk about Carly?s experience using a GLP-1 medication to manage the intense food-related thoughts and appetite challenges that contributed to her disordered eating. Carly explains why this treatment has been helpful for her, while we discuss the complexities of using GLP-1 medications in people with T1D and why individual medical guidance matters.
Throughout the conversation, we also discuss the relationship between T1D, appetite regulation, food noise, body image, and disordered eating, as well as the gaps Carly encountered when trying to get support.
Carly is open about where she is today, including her return to school, her interest in a career helping others, and her desire to advocate for people living with T1D and disordered eating.

Most people believe exercising in a fasted state with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is dangerous, but I know that's not the whole story!
In this episode, Sami Parker and I break down how we make fasted workouts work without living in fear of lows or highs. If you are tired of workout advice that feels too cautious, too vague, or just plain wrong, this conversation is for you.
Sami, a registered nurse (RN) and personal trainer with 14 years of T1D experience, shares her simple approach to exercising on an insulin pump in a fasted state without turning it into a whole production. I talk about how understanding insulin, basal rates, and exercise science can make movement feel safer and more manageable. Together, we get real about insulin on board (IOB), activity mode, and the freedom that comes from learning what actually works for your body.
You will hear why aggressive carb loading can make exercise messier, how quick glucose can help when you need it, and why paying attention to your own patterns matters more than waiting for perfect rules. If you have ever worried that working out will wreck your blood sugar, this episode offers a smarter, more confident way forward.
This episode is for active people with T1D, parents, caregivers, and anyone who wants straight talk instead of sugar-coated advice. If you want to feel more in control of exercise and less afraid of blood sugar swings, this one is worth your time.

Most people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) struggle not just with blood sugar management, but with weight loss and sustainable health habits?and too many are left to figure it out alone.
In this episode, Leanne Matthews and I get real about what actually makes T1D weight management so hard, and why quick fixes keep falling apart.
We talk about fear of lows, unpredictable insulin needs, and the truth about building a routine that lasts. There are no magic tricks when it comes to weight loss, just the practical, real, sometimes hard stuff that actually makes a difference.

If you've ever wished your CGM or insulin pump could do just a little more, this episode is for you.
I'm joined by Greg Badros, founder of Gluroo and father of a son with type 1 diabetes, to talk about how he built an app to fill the gaps left by today's diabetes technology.
Together, we dive into everything from logging meals, exercise, insulin, and low treatments to identifying patterns that can help you better understand what's affecting your blood sugar day-to-day.
We also talk about how Gluroo works alongside your existing diabetes devices, why it was designed to reduce the mental burden of diabetes rather than add to it, and how its companion apps, Got CGM and FlashSnack, make managing diabetes even easier.
Whether you're living with type 1 diabetes yourself or caring for someone who is, I think you'll come away with a better understanding of how the right tools can help you spend less time managing diabetes and more time living your life.
Let me know in the comments: What's one feature you wish your CGM or insulin pump could do that it doesn't today?

What does the stock market have to do with curing type 1 diabetes?
Actually...a lot.
In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, my friend Julia Flaherty joins me to pull back the curtain on the business side of diabetes research. We talk about how biotech companies raise money, why investors get excited about clinical trial results, what happens when a company gets acquired, and why so many people living with T1D are becoming shareholders themselves.
If you've ever wondered why a company's stock jumps after a promising study?or how someone could potentially invest in the future of diabetes research?this episode is for you.
This isn't investment advice. It's simply an honest, easy-to-understand conversation about the money that helps fund the race toward better treatments and, hopefully, one day, a cure for type 1 diabetes.

What if a newly diagnosed person with type 1 diabetes (T1D) could dramatically reduce their insulin needs, or even stop taking mealtime insulin altogether?
In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, we sit down with Jacob, who was diagnosed with T1D in February 2026 and enrolled in the Beta Preserve clinical trial just weeks later. The study is exploring whether two rounds of Tzield (teplizumab) can preserve insulin-producing beta cells more effectively than a single treatment.
Just months after beginning treatment, Jacob has cut his basal insulin by more than half and no longer needs mealtime insulin. He shares what it was like to undergo 12 consecutive days of Tzield infusions, the side effects he experienced, and how his blood sugars and daily life have changed.
We also discuss how Tzield works, why early screening for type 1 diabetes is becoming increasingly important, and what this research could mean for the future of T1D treatment. Most importantly, Jacob explains why he hopes his story inspires others to consider screening, clinical trials, and opportunities to preserve beta cell function after diagnosis.
If you live with type 1 diabetes, care for someone who does, or want to stay informed about the latest diabetes research, this is an episode you won't want to miss.
Would you consider participating in a clinical trial like this? Have questions about Tzield or T1D screening? Leave a comment. We'd love to hear your thoughts.

We can be excited and practical at the same time. It's important to look beyond the headlines at the specific challenges within any clinical trial aiming to cure type 1 diabetes.
Recently, I've been accused of "smearing" the Eledon study because I've explained that?even though the results are extraordinary?this therapy is still a long way from becoming a cure that's available to thousands, let alone millions, of people living with type 1 diabetes.
So today, I sat down with someone who knows this therapy better than almost anyone:
Katie Beth Hand (Find her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calamitykatiebeth/)Katie Beth is one of the participants in the University of Chicago study using Eledon's anti-rejection drug, tegoprubart, alongside transplanted islet cells. She's currently living insulin-free because of that treatment.
In this conversation, we talk about what life is actually like after transplant, what the therapy involves, the benefits, the limitations, the business behind a clinical trial, and why it's important to be both excited and realistic about where this research stands today.
You don't have to choose between hope and honesty. We can have both.
Watch the interview and decide for yourself.

Topic Sensitivity Warning: This episode shares a story of surviving an abusive relationship and how it affected diabetes management. If this topic feels close to home, please take care of yourself while listening.
Managing type 1 diabetes is hard enough on its own. But when you?re surviving an emotionally abusive relationship, the stress doesn?t stay neatly tucked away in the background. It spills into everything?including your blood sugars.
In this episode, I share what it was like trying to manage my diabetes while living in a relationship that was slowly tearing me down. My A1C didn?t spike because I ?wasn?t trying hard enough.? My blood sugars reflected the constant stress, fear, and exhaustion I was living with every day.
If you?ve ever been in a relationship like this, or you?re still finding your way out, you are not alone. I hope this episode helps you feel seen, understood, and maybe a little less alone in the mess of it. ?

What happens when managing type 1 diabetes (T1D) starts to turn into obsessive thoughts?
Where is the line between responsible diabetes care and when OCD begins to creep in?
In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, we sit down with Natalia from Kairos Wellness Collective to talk about the often-overlooked connection between T1D and OCD. Living with T1D requires constant attention, decision-making, and number checking.
For some people, that mental load can begin to overlap with obsessive thinking patterns in ways that aren?t always easy to recognize.
This conversation explores why that can happen, how it shows up in real life, and what it can look like to find a healthier balance while still managing your diabetes.
If you live with both OCD and T1D, we?d love to hear from you. What has your experience been like managing both?

In this deeply honest episode of the Diabetes Nerd podcast, Ginger sits down with Mary Ann Chamberlain to talk about a chapter of diabetes that doesn?t get discussed enough.
In her 20s, Mary Ann struggled to take her insulin consistently. Not because she didn?t ?know better" or didn?t care. It was because the mental weight of type 1 diabetes (T1D) was too heavy.
Years later, that chapter caught up with her in the form of diabetic retinopathy and vision loss.
This conversation isn?t about fear. It?s about being honest about the real consequences of untreated burnout and prolonged high blood sugars, especially during your teens and 20s. It explores how those years can affect your health down the road, and what it looks like to move forward when those consequences become part of your reality.
Mary Ann opens up about the shame she carried for years. The grief of losing part of her vision. And the powerful shift from self-blame to self-acceptance. Today, she recognizes how she has adapted, rebuilt, and become proud of the life she?s created.
If you?ve ever struggled to take your insulin consistently?
If you?ve ever felt crushed under the daily mental load?
If you?ve ever looked back and thought, ?I should have done better??
This episode will meet you there.
Just because your past is a part of your story, it doesn?t get to write your ending.

Stop Overeating During LowsExercise with DiabetesDealing with Diabetes BurnoutPregnancy with Type 1 DiabetesEmotional Eating with DiabetesWhen I Go LowAin't Gonna Hide my T1DIn this episode, we chat with Aimee Jose about the power of everyday movement and its impact on insulin resistance.
Aimee breaks down how physical activity doesn?t have to mean gym memberships, punishing workouts, or finding an extra hour you don?t have. Instead, she shows us how simple shifts?like standing more, using your desk differently, or sneaking in a few squats?can meaningfully support insulin sensitivity.
We dig into why muscle activation matters, how small consistent habits build big health wins, and why ?effective exercise? might look a lot simpler (and more doable) than you?ve been led to believe. If you?ve ever felt overwhelmed by traditional exercise advice, this conversation will feel like a deep exhale.

Stop Overeating During LowsExercise with DiabetesDealing with Diabetes BurnoutPregnancy with Type 1 DiabetesEmotional Eating with DiabetesWhen I Go LowAin't Gonna Hide my T1DLiving with type 1 diabetes (T1D) isn?t just a medical reality?it?s a lifelong relationship.
In this soulful, candid conversation, Neil Greathouse opens up about his own journey, from years of brushing diabetes aside to finally choosing himself with steady, sustainable care.
He talks about the quiet power of small, daily shifts?the kind of changes that don?t demand perfection, just presence. Through honesty, humor, and a hard-won sense of compassion, Neil shows how mindset shapes the path forward far more than numbers ever could.
Together, we explore what it means to build a life that supports your health instead of fights it: the role of community, the grounding force of accountability, and the relief in naming diabetes distress for what it is. Neil reminds us that frustration is normal, curiosity is fuel, and tracking habits isn?t about judgment?it?s about recognizing your own patterns so you can live with more ease.
If you?re craving steadiness, clarity, or simply a reminder that you?re not alone in this messy, beautiful process, this episode offers a gentle nudge toward patience, self-respect, and the kind of habits that last.
