When another child hits your toddler, the instinct to snap at the other kid ? or tell your own child to hit back ? is completely understandable. Neither one teaches your child what actually helps. This video walks through what to do instead, including the honest answer to the question almost every parent asks at some point: should you ever teach your child to hit back?
Physical aggression in toddlers peaks around age 2 to 2.5 before declining ? the child who hit yours is very likely going through the same developmental stage most toddlers pass through, not something uniquely wrong with them (Tremblay et al., 2004).
In this podcast:
? The 3 A's Method, applied to the moment your child gets hit
? The honest answer to "should I teach my child to hit back?"
? How to manage your own protective anger in the moment
? What to do when it's the same child hitting yours, over and over
? The exact words to use with your child afterward
Another child takes your toddler's toy, and you freeze or you feel your blood pressure spike at the other parent standing right there, not stepping in. This video walks through exactly what to say and do, whether or not the other parent gets involved.
Toddlers as young as 20 months already actively assert ownership, and by 30 months they're standing their ground against a peer's attempts to take what's theirs, which is part of why these moments feel so constant and so charged (Ross, 2013).
In this podcast:
? The 3 A's Method: Acknowledge, Anchor, Alternative
? What to say when it's clearly your child's toy or turn
? Exactly what to do when the other parent doesn't step in
? Why freezing teaches the opposite of what you want your child to learn
? The one line that speaks up for your child without starting a parent-to-parent conflict
If your toddler keeps hitting other kids ? not a single tap, but real, repeated hitting ? you've probably already heard "check in with the hurt child first." That advice is right, but it's incomplete. It doesn't tell you what to actually do about the hitting itself, especially when it keeps happening.
In this episode, I'm walking through the CATCH Method ? the exact 5-step sequence I use in my practice for repeated physical aggression in toddlers, including close supervision, physical interruption, and consistent consequences that actually decrease the behavior over time. Physical aggression is developmentally normal and rises through age 2 to 3 before declining through the preschool years ? the real task isn't eliminating the impulse, it's teaching a child to control it (Tremblay et al., 2004).
In this episode: ? The CATCH Method for repeated hitting, step by step ? Why checking in with the hurt child first isn't the whole answer ? The exact one-sentence consequence to state ? and how to follow through ? What to do when your child hits back ? How to rebuild trust with other kids and parents once the hitting stops

Your toddler grabs a toy from another child, and suddenly you're not just managing your kid ? you're managing your own embarrassment in front of the other parent. This episode walks through exactly what to say to your child, and how to handle the other adult without over-apologizing.
Toddlers are only just beginning to understand ownership as a concept at all between 24 and 30 months, and that understanding is directly linked to whether they share in the first place.
In this episode: ? The 3 A's Method for the moment your child takes someone else's toy ? What to say instead of just "give it back" ? How to handle the other parent without over-apologizing ? Whether your child taking a toy means something is wrong ? The exact phrase that turns "give it back" into an actual lesson

When your toddler hits another child ? at a playdate, at preschool, with a sibling ? the stakes feel completely different than when they hit you. Parents are managing three relationships at once: their child, the child who got hit, and the other parent watching it all unfold. The instincts most parents reach for in that moment are understandable ? but most of them miss the teaching opportunity entirely.
Toddler aggression toward other children is one of the most socially pressured parenting moments you'll face. This video breaks down the five ways parents most commonly respond, which ones backfire, and the one response that actually teaches your toddler what to do instead.
Research confirms that children in the preoperational stage (ages 2?7) are still developing the impulse control and perspective-taking skills needed to navigate peer conflict ? meaning they need specific, in-the-moment guidance, not just punishment (Piaget & Inhelder, 1969). In this video: ? The 5 ways parents respond when their toddler hits another child ? and which backfire ? Why the response order matters more than most parents realize ? The social repair step most parents skip ? and why it's the most important teaching moment ? What to say to the other parent without undermining your child ? The one response that works with your child's developmental stage, not against it

Why toddlers hit is one of the most common questions I get from parents ? and the most common responses parents reach for are actually reinforcing the very behavior they're trying to stop. This video breaks down the five responses most parents use when their toddler hits, which ones are making things worse, and the one that actually works.
Toddler aggression is a normal part of development ? but normal doesn't mean you ignore it. Understanding why toddlers hit is the first step. Responding in the right way is what determines whether it keeps happening.
Research on child development confirms that toddlers in the sensorimotor stage (birth through age 2) learn primarily through immediate physical cause and effect ? not through reasoning or delayed consequences (Piaget, 1952). That changes everything about how you respond.
In this episode: ? The 5 ways parents respond when their toddler hits ? and which ones backfire ? Why your toddler may be hitting more after you try to stop it ? The developmental reason behind toddler hitting that most parents don't know ? The one response that works with your toddler's brain, not against it ? ? Ready to move beyond what to do during a toddler tantrum ? and what to stop doing? ? drlindsayemmerson.com/workshop
Knowing what to do during a toddler tantrum is one of the most common questions parents search ? and most of the instinctive answers make tantrums last longer. In this video, Dr. Lindsay Emmerson explains why the Escalation Loop runs on parental engagement, and gives parents the three-step approach that actually breaks it. Most toddler tantrum advice focuses on what to say. This video focuses on what to stop doing ? and why the absence of engagement, paired with a regulated parental presence, is the most effective response available.
In this video: ? ? Why explaining, validating, negotiating, and getting firmer all make tantrums worse ? not better ? The neurological reason toddlers can't hear you during peak emotional flooding ? What the Escalation Loop is and why parental engagement keeps it running ? The three-step approach: stop engaging, regulate yourself, wait for the arc to complete ? ? Free workshop for parents ? drlindsayemmerson.com/workshop | Learn the research-backed approach that gives you warmth and structure together ? not as a trade-off. Gentle parenting gets a lot right. But as most parents practice it, something is missing ? and that gap is exactly why so many parents who are genuinely trying to implement it still feel like something isn't working. This video names the gap directly, explains what sixty years of research actually says about what produces the best outcomes for children, and offers a clear, evidence-based alternative that doesn't ask you to choose between warmth and structure. If you've been implementing gentle parenting and your child is still testing constantly, the connection feels fragile, or you feel like you're managing emotions without ever actually influencing long-term behavior ? this video explains why. The issue isn't that you're applying it wrong. It's that gentle parenting, as most people practice it, is a reactive framework without a proactive foundation. Understanding what's underneath the behavior ? what your child's brain is actually capable of at their developmental stage ? is the layer that makes everything else work. Diana Baumrind's six decades of research, replicated across thousands of families and multiple cultures, consistently identifies authoritative parenting ? high warmth combined with consistent structure ? as the approach with the best outcomes across every measure of child wellbeing (Baumrind, 1991). John Gottman's research on relationship dynamics adds a second dimension: connection without consistent structure creates instability rather than felt security, and children respond to that instability by testing harder, not less. In this episode: ? What gentle parenting gets right ? and the one critical piece most parents are missing ? Why warmth without structure creates anxiety, not security (Baumrind's research explained) ? Why connection without consistency doesn't hold ? and what children do when it doesn't ? What authoritative parenting actually looks like in daily life ? The specific results that shift when warmth and structure are working together ? ? Free workshop for parents ? drlindsayemmerson.com/workshop | Learn the authoritative parenting framework that holds warmth and structure together ? every day, not on alternating ones. Authoritative parenting produces the best outcomes for children across every measure the research tracks ? but most parents have never seen what it actually looks like in a real home on a real day. This video uses one of the most surprisingly accurate parenting illustrations in film history to show exactly what the two most common parenting patterns are each missing, and what changes when warmth and structure finally work together instead of trading off. Most parents swing between two modes: high warmth and low structure when they have energy; high structure and low warmth when they're depleted. Neither produces what they're reaching for. This video explains why warmth without structure creates anxiety rather than security, why structure without warmth produces compliance rather than genuine connection, and what authoritative parenting ? the combination of both ? actually looks like on an ordinary Tuesday. Over sixty years of research across thousands of families has consistently confirmed that the combination of high warmth and high structure produces significantly better outcomes across every measure of child wellbeing than either dimension alone (Baumrind, 1991; Lamborn et al., 1991). In this video: ? The two parenting modes most parents swing between ? and what each is missing ? Why warmth without structure creates anxiety in children, not security ? Why structure without warmth produces compliance rather than genuine connection ? What authoritative parenting actually looks like ? and why it's a learned skill, not a personality trait ? This video explains the real reason common parenting strategies keep failing, and names the foundational layer that determines whether any strategy works or falls flat. This isn't about finding a better consequence or a smarter reward system. Every strategy in the traditional parenting toolkit is reactive ? a response to behavior that has already happened. There's nothing working in the background to prevent the problem before it starts. This video introduces the difference between proactive and reactive parenting, and explains why understanding your child's developmental stage is the layer that makes every tool you already have start working. Decades of research on parenting outcomes confirm that behavioral strategies produce consistently better results when they're built on a foundation of developmental understanding, warmth, and structure together ? and consistently underperform without it (Baumrind, 1991). In this video: ? Why timeouts, reward charts, and consequences keep not working ? the real reason ? 3 specific problems with every reactive parenting strategy (including the one you haven't tried yet) ? The difference between proactive and reactive parenting ? and why it changes everything ? A 4-question self-check to pinpoint exactly where your system has a gap ? What to focus on instead ? and why it makes your existing strategies start working ? Comment WORKSHOP below if today's video resonated with you. I read every single one. ? #WhyTimeoutsDontWork #RewardChartsForKids #PositiveDiscipline #ParentingStrategies #ParentingWithPsychology #ChildBehavior #ToddlerDiscipline #ParentingAdvice #AuthoritativeParenting #ChildDevelopment

? Free workshop for parents ? drlindsayemmerson.com/workshop | Stop the snap-and-guilt cycle with the 5 C's to Amazing Parenting. Stop snapping at your kids ? even when they're pushing every button you have, even at 7am when the morning is already off the rails. If you've ever woken up genuinely promising yourself today will be different, only to find yourself reacting the exact same way by 8am, this video tells you exactly why ? and gives you a named, practical tool to interrupt the cycle starting today. Most advice about parenting anger tells you to try harder or breathe deeper. This episode goes further: it names the three specific reasons the snap-and-guilt cycle persists even in parents who genuinely don't want to yell, explains the surprising neuroscience behind why snapping is so hard to stop, and introduces the Three Universal Questions ? a deliberate, ten-second tool that replaces the reactive loop with a chosen response. Research in behavioral psychology shows that reactive parenting responses are reinforced through negative reinforcement ? the unpleasant behavior stops, the brain records "that worked," and the pattern deepens (Skinner, 1938). Understanding the mechanism is the first step to choosing something different. In this episode: ? Why you keep snapping even when you truly don't want to ? 3 specific reasons ? The surprising neuroscience behind why yelling is so hard to stop (it's not a character flaw) ? The one question most parents never ask ? that changes how you respond in any hard moment ? Strong-willed children who argue about everything aren't being disrespectful ? their developing brains are doing exactly what they're supposed to do. In this video, Dr. Lindsay uses Piaget's research on the preoperational stage (ages 2?7) to show you why the arguing is a sign of healthy development, and gives you the exact language to respond in the moment.
Once you understand what Dr. Lindsay calls The Preoperational Push, the frustration shifts. Not because the behavior changes immediately ? because what you're looking at changes completely. Research shows that children ages two through seven are in a stage of active cognitive development defined by rule-testing and the construction of logical structures (Piaget, 1964).
In this video: ? What Piaget's preoperational stage tells us about children ages 2?7 ? Why "who owns the car?" is a sign of advanced reasoning ? not disrespect ? How to reframe "she always has to win" as persistence and self-advocacy ? The Preoperational Push: why defiance is often problem-solving in disguise ? ? Ready to try discipline without spanking ? but not sure where to start? My free workshop will show you how ? https://www.drlindsayemmerson.com/workshop Discipline without spanking is possible ? and in this video, Dr. Lindsay Emmerson (licensed clinical psychologist) explains exactly why physical punishment stops working over time, and what to reach for instead. If you've ever reached for spanking as discipline and immediately felt that wave of dread afterward, that feeling is important information. This video is for you. Does spanking work? You'll learn exactly why the answer is yes ? but only in the short term. Dr. Lindsay introduces a concept called The Compliance Illusion, explains what developmental psychology tells us about why your child behaves the way they do, and shares the single most important shift that has helped parents she works with finally walk away from physical punishment for good ? with confidence and without guilt. Research consistently shows that spanking is not associated with improved child behavior over time and is linked to increased aggression and damaged parent-child relationships (Gershoff & Grogan-Kaylor, 2016). In this episode: ? Why spanking works ? just not the way you think (The Compliance Illusion) ? What 75 research studies reveal about spanking's long-term effects ? Object permanence & egocentrism ? why children think completely differently than adults ? The mindset shift (and the 5 C's framework) that changes everything ? Why kids don't listen is one of the most common questions I get from parents ? and the answer isn't what most people expect. It's almost never about defiance. It's almost always about how communication is happening. And that means it can be changed.
In this video I'm walking you through five specific, research-backed reasons your child may be tuning out your words ? and for each one, a practical strategy you can start using today. This is how to get kids to listen without repeating yourself, without yelling, and without the power struggle.
You'll learn: ? Why your child's brain is literally filtering out your voice (habituation theory) ? The difference between asking and stating ? and why it matters ? How transition warnings reduce resistance dramatically ? Why following through once beats repeating yourself ten times ? The "Reset Before You Repeat" technique for when you're at your limit
Based on research by Baumrind (1991), Broadbent (1958), Skinner (1953), and Piaget (1952).

Calm parenting isn't about being perfect ? it's about understanding what your child's brain actually needs in a hard moment. And the science is clear: children cannot return to a calm state on their own. They need you to get there first.
In this video I'm breaking down co-regulation ? what it is, why it works, and exactly how to use it in real time. Whether your child is two or twelve, this is the most important thing you can do to help them build emotional regulation that lasts.
You'll learn: ? Why screaming "calm down!" almost never works (it's neuroscience, not defiance) ? Intentional parenting sounds great in theory. But what does it actually look like when you've sliced an apple, and your kid is screaming from the other room?
In this video, I walk through 5 real ways parents respond to everyday moments like this one ? from the empathetic response to the humor response to the "I am running on empty today" response. No judgment. Just an honest look at what each choice teaches your child, and what to aim for when you actually have the capacity.
Because here's what the research tells us: it's not the big parenting moments that shape your child most. It's the aggregate of the small ones ? the dozens of tiny forks in the road you face before lunch ? that determine how your child sees you, how they understand the world, and the quality of your relationship over time (Baumrind, 1991).
In this video: ? The 5 ways parents respond to small meltdowns (and what each one teaches) ? Why the "silent fix" is sometimes the wisest choice ? How to use humor to defuse low-stakes moments ? ADHD parenting strategies don't always look the way we expect ? and for me, the one that finally worked was the last one I ever thought I'd try.
I never planned to homeschool. I have four kids, one of whom has ADHD, and after the chaos of COVID school-from-home, I wanted absolutely no part of being responsible for my child's education. But after years of 504 plans, unsupportive teachers, junior high overwhelm, and watching my bright kid become miserable in a system that wasn't built for his brain ? I changed my mind. And it's been one of the best parenting decisions I've ever made.
In this episode, I'm sharing the full journey AND teaching you the S.O.L.V.E. method ? a research-backed problem-solving framework you can use to think through any complex parenting challenge, from school struggles to chore battles to friendship conflicts. Whether your child has ADHD, is just unhappy at school, or you've been quietly wondering if there's a better option ? this episode is your roadmap.

The question that finally tipped me toward homeschool ? What to look for in a homeschool program for a child with ADHD ? In this video, I explain the critical mistake parents often make between ages 6?11 that determines whether their child hides struggles or turns to them for support during the teen years. In this episode, I'll expose the hidden dangers of authoritarian parenting that most parents never see coming, and the biggest risk isn't what you think. While you may be using strict "because I said so" methods to raise a respectful, successful child who can handle the real world, this approach often achieves the exact opposite of what you're hoping for. I'll break down five critical risks of authoritarian parenting, including what happens to these "perfect" kids when they become adults that will completely change how you think about discipline and control. The biggest risk isn't rebellion or acting out - it's something far more devastating and often permanent that destroys the most important thing in your family.

In this episode, I'll expose the hidden dangers of permissive parenting that loving parents never see coming, and the biggest risk isn't what you think. While you may be using permissive methods to nurture your child's creativity and build their confidence, this approach often creates the exact opposite of what you're hoping for. I'll reveal five devastating risks of saying yes too often, including the heartbreaking things adult children say to their permissive parents that will shock you. The next time your child begs and pleads for you to change your mind about a boundary you've set, you'll think twice after watching this video and understanding the real long-term consequences of avoiding conflict and structure in your parenting.

In this episode, I'll walk you through 10 subtle early signs of ADHD that you can identify in children aged 6 months to 5 years - including a specific behavior during bedtime stories that most parents and even some pediatricians completely miss.
As a clinical psychologist who works with families daily, I'll show you exactly how to check for each sign at home, because recognizing these early indicators can be transformative for your child's academic success, relationships, and your family's overall well-being.
Keep in mind that potting one or two (or even more) of these signs does not necessarily mean your child has ADHD. This video serves to facilitate seeking guidance from your child's pediatrician or another health professional if you have concerns about your child's behavior. It is meant to be an at-home diagnostic tool.
