Hello Chairs Mena and Valdez and members of the State Government committees, 
I am very excited about the potential for Washington to become the first in the nation to establish a Commission on Boys and Men. I am writing to ask that you please help make this happen. 

I know that the idea of a government commission focused on helping boys and men sounds strange at first. When you look at the statistics, and you hear the real stories of struggle, though, it becomes clear that a commission on boys and men is indeed warranted and needed. Its work and recommendations will help amplify ongoing efforts to improve outcomes around education, homelessness, incarceration, suicides, mental and physical health, drug and alcohol abuse, family cohesion, and other important issues. 

If possible, I strongly recommend checking out the work of Richard Reeved and his American Institute for Boys and Men, along with his book Of Boys and Men. I also want to point out that Democratic governors in multiple states have recently used their State of the State addresses to talk about the importance of supporting boys and men ? including governors Wes Moore (Maryland), Gretchen Whitmer (Michigan), and Ned Lamont (Connecticut). 

Thank you for your open heart to care for all Washingtonians, including boys and men, and for looking at what role you can play in bringing about the creation of a Washington State Commission on Boys and Men.

After opening up about her abuse at the hands of her husband, Naresh, 28-year-old Mamta Kafle Bhatt disappeared. In 2024, 13-year-old middle schooler Savannah Copeland was stabbed to death by a local 15-year-old boy. Using the tracking app Life360, her parents were able to track her phone which helped in leading them towards her location on a trail in the woods. Instead of a regular memorial on the spot where Savannah was found, her parents wanted to turn the area into a peaceful place in nature for people to enjoy or go to pay their respects.

In 2018, 28-year-old Kevin Graves went to the EDM festival, Electric Forest, in Michigan for the first time. It was during this trip that he suddenly went missing. His family and friends searched nonstop for him, handing out fliers and even putting up a billboard alerting people to Graves' disappearance. Sarah Stern was a 19-year-old college student living in Neptune City, New Jersey, when, in December 2016, she suddenly vanished. Her disappearance sparked immediate concern, where it was unknown whether she took her life, ran away, or was met with foul play. Through speaking with her best friend, Liam McAtasney, investigators thought it might be plausible that she took her life or ran away, considering he was telling them how unhappy Sarah was and that she was planning on fleeing to Canada to get away from her father. However, a few weeks after she disappeared, a friend of Liam?s came forward to the police that he believed Liam may have killed her and staged her disappearance. A sting operation was conducted, and within hours, they retrieved a videotaped confession from Liam, who explained, in detail, how he murdered Sarah with the help of his friend Preston over some money that Sarah had found a few months prior. This confession led to the arrests of both Liam and Preston, and Preston ultimately agreed to a deal where he would testify against Liam in exchange for a lesser sentence. Both men are behind bars, and unfortunately, Sarah?s body has never been recovered from the water where they tossed her body.

In April 2018, David Tronnes called 911, yelling and crying that he had just found his wife Shanti dead in their bathtub. He said she must have slipped and fallen while he was out of the house that morning. However, Shanti was dry, as was the tub, and none of David?s story was adding up. On June 4, 2019, longtime friends Carnell Sledge and Katherine Brown were out walking at the Rocky River Reservation in Ohio. April Lynn Holt was a mother of two, living outside of Nashville, Tennessee, working hard to create a good life for herself and her family. TikTok was a huge passion of hers, and she began making content back in the pandemic and had garnered over 200,000 followers. Her content was mainly surrounding her family, her faith, and lifting other people up. She was really big on manifestations and elevating your life, so her content was a reflection of that. Her content also centered around her husband, Donovan Holt. However, in 2021 the two of them separated. It was an amicable decision, but eventually they decided to give it another go. But in July of 2023, April realized she no longer wanted to be with him. So that month she asked him for a formal divorce. 2 weeks later, her 7 year old son found her with a plastic bag duct taped to her head in their bathroom. Three days later she died. From the beginning, April?s mom Jamie knew there was more to the story, and she was right. She learned that Donovan had gotten into an argument with April, strangled her, and then staged it as a suicide. Through her hard work, April is on the path towards getting justice.

Aniah Blanchard was a 19-year-old college student living in Auburn, Alabama, when on October 23, 2019, she never returned home. Despite dropping off her brother and telling him she was headed back to her apartment, she never arrived. Then, odd messages to her roommate started coming through, and by the next day, it was clear that she?d never made it back. Friends and family joined in on the search, and two days later, her car was found abandoned 50 miles away. There was enough blood inside of her vehicle that investigators determined foul play had occurred. Over the following weeks, three men ended up getting arrested in connection with her abduction, but only one of those men, Ibraheem Yazeed, was determined to be responsible for her actual murder. About a month later, Aniah?s body was found, and despite overwhelming evidence to suggest Ibraheem murdered her, he has yet to face trial in part because of the pandemic and also in part due to our slow justice system. However, justice is on the horizon. Her family never gave up hope that she would be found, and they have since created Aniah?s Heart, a nonprofit in her honor.

Sierra Mae LaMar was a 15-year-old high school student living in Morgan Hill, California with her mom and her mom?s boyfriend when, completely unexpectedly, she disappeared. Though at first the police thought she may have run away, due to her being unhappy with living in Morgan Hill, evidence quickly suggested otherwise. Over the course of a few days, her cell phone and personal belongings were found, which suggested that she had been taken against her own will. And that is exactly what happened. DNA linked her abduction to a 21-year-old guy named Antolin Garcia-Torres, who was eventually arrested for her kidnapping and murder. Unfortunately, to this day, her remains have never been found.

Early one morning in 2015, Amanda Blackburn was at home with her husband Davey?a local pastor, and their toddler son. 16-year-old Mia Campos was 7 months pregnant when she was found by her family, dead in the woods near her home. Just before her death, she had left the house the night prior with an unknown person. Veronica Butler was in a long-standing custody battle for her children with her mother-in-law, Tiffany Adams, for several years, but in March of 2024, it all came to an end when Tiffany orchestrated and carried out her murder. In the early hours of March 4, 2024, college student Caleb Harris was awake with his roommates, meeting their new dog, playing with her outside, and taking her out for a walk. Caleb stayed up later while his roommates went to bed. He messaged a friend, ordered food delivery, and then disappeared. The following morning when his roommates saw that all of his belongings were still at home, his food untouched, and his car in the driveway, they reported him missing.

Update:
On the evening of June 24th, human remains were discovered in a water lift station in Corpus Christi not far from Caleb?s apartment. At this time, CCPD says there is no confirmation that the remains are connected to Caleb?s disappearance, but a medical examiner will ultimately make that determination. Because there has been no formal identification, I ask that we do not speculate and keep Caleb?s family in our thoughts at this time.

In June 2003, five-year-old LeeAnna Warner suddenly went missing after going off to play with a friend. Even after the entire town got involved with the search effort, there was no break in the case; no one could find the little girl. A neighbor who lived down the street was separately charged after police found CP on his computer, but he took his own life before he could be truly questioned. April Kauffman was described as part princess, part bulldog? She was beautiful, funny, charismatic, generous, incredibly philanthropic, and would stop at nothing to give back to the causes she believed in. One of the things she believed in most was helping Veterans. Her passion for helping Veterans is what drew her to Jim Kauffman, her third husband. But after 10 years of marriage, she wanted out. After finding out he lied about being a veteran and that he was running an illegal pill mill with a local motorcycle gang, April asked for a divorce. But rather than risk losing half of his net worth, Jim paid someone in that motorcycle gang to murder her. After years of her case going cold, her daughter pushed for justice and ultimately landed those responsible behind bars, thanks, in part, to a member of the gang who snitched.

Susana Morales was 16 years old, living in Norcross, Georgia when one night she suddenly disappeared. July 26th, 2022 was a seemingly normal evening, and Susana spent a few hours that night a block away from her house with a friend, at her friend?s apartment. This was something she did often as it was less than a 10-minute walk from her house. But when she never came home that night, her family began to worry. She was reported missing the following morning, but it wasn?t until early February of 2023 that they got answers. On February 6th, Susana?s skeletal remains were found 20 miles from her home, and evidence left at this location led police officers to her killer, fellow police officer Miles Bryant. Bryant has since been arrested and charged with Susana?s murder, along with a string of other crimes he had committed.

Lauren Dunne Astley was 18 years old and had her whole life ahead of her. In the fall of 2011 she was planning on attending Elon University for college, but not before spending her last summer at home in Massachusetts with her friends. But that all changed on July 3rd, 2011, when Nathaniel Fujita, her recent ex-boyfriend, strangled her to death in his garage. His motive? Their breakup. On March 7, 2013, he was found guilty and convicted of first-degree murder. Amidst this tragedy, Lauren?s parents have dedicated their lives to educating teenagers about the dangers of breakup violence and have traveled all around to promote their non-profit, The Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund, which seeks to bring awareness to breakup violence, and promote education surrounding the matter.

Jennifer Dulos, a loving mother of five, was two years into a bitter divorce battle against her soon-to-be-ex-husband, Fotis Dulos, when she suddenly vanished. Though her car was quickly found a few miles from her home, Jennifer?s body has never been found. Hello Mr. Bradley,

My name is ____, and I am writing to you on behalf of Nancy Ng?s entire family, who have gone months without answers regarding what happened to her on October 19, 2023, on Lake Atitlán. After kayaking out into the lake, she disappeared in an alleged drowning incident. The one and only person who witnessed Nancy?s drowning has been uncooperative, and there are now allegations that a bribe occurred to have her statement omitted from the police report. This person then left the country without aiding in search efforts and has refused to cooperate with the family and search teams.

It is my understanding that you have the power to escalate her case to the appropriate authorities in Guatemala because, as it stands, little is being done to investigate her disappearance. Please help her and her family.

I am asking that you please:
- Request that Guatemalan authorities ask U.S. officials, such as the FBI, for assistance in this investigation. The United States has resources that would prove incredibly valuable to this investigation, as well as in the search for Nancy?s body.
- Facilitate a conversation between the Ng family and someone in Guatemala who is actively working the case. Currently, their family has been ignored by the prosecutor. Please help connect them with someone with more information regarding the status of Nancy?s case.
- Lastly - I am asking that you please not forget that Nancy was human. She was a sister, a daughter, a teacher, and a friend. All her loved ones want is to know what happened and to bring her home to lay her to rest. Their patience has been taken advantage of and it?s time someone stepped up to escalate the situation for them.
