Disability Inclusion Beyond Good Intentions: Northwest Center CEO Gene Boes on the Return on Inclusion
@SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics podcast host Dian Griesel interviews Gene Boes, president and CEO of Northwest Center, about what true disability inclusion and belonging look like in everyday life, especially at work. Mr. Boes urges people to focus on “able,” not “disability,” and to “suspend disbelief and be curious” about what’s possible, drawing on his experiences as a father of a daughter with severe autism, spouse of a wife with Parkinson’s, and son of a father with multiple sclerosis. He shares Northwest Center’s origins in 1965 and its role in creating Washington’s House Bill 90, a blueprint for the federal IDEA law, and explains how the organization supports people “cradle through career.” Boas details Northwest Center’s long partnership with Amazon, showing data-driven business benefits—reduced attrition, zero absenteeism, improved productivity, safety, and morale—and how accommodations like safety mirrors helped everyone, illustrating a “return on inclusion” that isn’t charity but competitive advantage.

Food Therapy, Somatics & Nervous System Regulation: Luis Mojica on Anxiety, Stress, Trauma
In this @SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics Podcast, host Dian Griesel interviews somatic educator and nutritional counselor Luis Mojica about “listening to your body.” Luis explains how somatic therapy differs from talk therapy by focusing on where experiences are held as physical sensations and how PTSD reflects a body still reacting to past events. Mojica shares how identifying sensation, relating to it with presence, and anchoring in the present can reduce symptoms even if memories remain. He connects somatics to his book, Food Therapy: Conscious Eating to Navigate Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma, describing foods as stimulants, depressants, and balancers that can raise or lower stress hormones like adrenaline through glucose spikes and crashes. He argues mood, anxiety, and behavior are strongly influenced by diet, emphasizes agency over identifying with anxiety or trauma, and previews future work on conflict and “tending to rupture,” including how blood sugar affects relationship conflict.

The Anti-Marriage Pact Author Lindsey MacMillan on Choice, Romance, and Rewriting the Script
In this @SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics episode, host Dian Griesel interviews author Lindsay MacMillan, a former “closet creative” who wrote poetry in bathroom stalls while working at Goldman Sachs before pursuing writing full time. MacMillan discusses her fifth book and bestseller, The Anti-Marriage Pact, released June 2, describing its edgy Brooklyn-graffiti cover and its story of four women—told through one first-person narrator—grappling with marriage, independence, and authenticity. She explains how the book grew from earlier work about dating as deal-making, explores cultural tensions like trad wife vs. rejecting marriage, and argues the real goal is conscious choice rather than conformity. The conversation covers character development, reader interpretation, art’s role in sparking debate, modern romance beyond checklists, and her hopes for TV adaptations, including progress on adapting her third novel set on Michigan’s Mackinac Island.

The Doctors’ Riot of 1788: Body Snatching, Bloodletting, and Public Trust with Andy McPhee
In this @SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics episode, host Dian Griesel interviews author Andy McPhee about the Doctors’ Riot of 1788 in New York City, where fear, class, race, medicine, and public trust collided over grave robbing for anatomy study. McPhee explains how early American physicians largely learned through apprenticeships and European training, creating high demand for cadavers amid few legal sources, leading to “resurrection men” stealing bodies -- often from the Negroes Burial Ground and paupers’ cemeteries. This went on without public outcry, until thefts from the historic Trinity Church cemetery -- still a NYC landmark -- sparked riots. Their discussion explores the moral and legal ambiguity of corpse theft; the era’s reliance on bloodletting; humor theory (and we're not talking about laughter and comedy!); and, the lasting need for bodies in medical education that continues today. McPhee connects the history to modern “body broker” tissue banks, scandals involving funeral homes and universities, and the lack of regulation. All are urged to do some thorough due diligence regarding their wills, estates and body donation planning.

Words Like Honey: How Your Language Shapes Kids, Connection, and Respect | Amy Hughes Interview
Dian Griesel interviews author Amy Hughes, author of Words Like Honey, about how everyday words and tone affect children’s feelings, behavior, learning, and long-term beliefs. Hughes shares her own communication struggles and a key moment when her daughter misinterpreted a joking comment (“I stole it”) for years, illustrating how kids process language literally and developmentally. They discuss “stinging” phrases like “Don’t be sad,” “Calm down,” “Hurry up,” and “What’s wrong with you?” and offer alternatives that validate emotions, add clarity, and build connection. Hughes explains adapting communication by age (play/reward for younger kids, context for older kids), “connect before we correct,” using a “time-in” space, saying “we” to reduce isolation, and allowing respectful pushback (“present another way”). The conversation also covers fear-based authority, respect vs fear, modeling communication through questions and apologies, and giving yourself grace and repairing relationships at any age.

The Gatsby Code: Why The Great Gatsby Still Haunts America with Bob Batchelor, historian and author
In this episode, host Dian Griesel talks with cultural historian and award-winning author Bob Batchelor about his book The Gatsby Code and why F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby still resonates 100 years after publication. Batchelor traces the novel’s post – World War II rise in classrooms, credits its enduring power to Fitzgerald’s beautiful writing and Jay Gatsby’s ambiguity, and argues Gatsby functions as a mirror of America’s constant reinvention and complicated faith in the American dream. The conversation explores Jazz Age excess, prohibition-era rebellion, and the novel’s early depiction of celebrity culture to today’s social media and influencer dynamics, and also includes a discussion about Fitzgerald and Zelda’s own celebrity. Batchelor also previews his upcoming political thriller Are You a Patriot? and mentions a completed biography of Nolan Ryan.

Dian Griesel interviews serial entrepreneur Shai Stern, founder of Gotavi, about simplifying the inefficient “pipes” of running a business such as formation, compliance, registered agents/DBAs, insurance, payments/treasury, payroll (via an embedded third party), background checks, business licensing, answer engine optimization, and document repository needs, so founders can focus on growth. Aldara Ortega: From Model to Underwater Fine Art Photographer | Painting With Light
Host Dian Griesel interviews New York/Miami based model and fine art photographer Aldara Ortega about her path from being scouted at 18 in Madrid to building a distinctive underwater photography practice.
Ortega shares how studying fashion design and darkroom photography, plus years of oil painting, shaped her editing approach -- treating images like a canvas and “painting with light” through color grading and selective enhancement. Inspired by swimming in a skylit New York pool, she began creating underwater images with a point-and-shoot and improvised gear, leading to early series like “Liquid Desert,” later refining her work into ethereal, motion-focused compositions using reflections and refractions.
Now in Miami, she offers commissioned underwater portraits, discusses ocean vs. pool conditions, her Canon and lite setup, free-diving certifications, and how her modeling experience helps guide subjects calmly and confidently.

1031 Exchanges Explained: Defer Real Estate Taxes, Timelines, Reverse Exchanges & Estate Planning with Ryan Vassar, Esq. Host Dian Griesel interviews 1031 exchange specialist and qualified intermediary Ryan Vassar about how Section 1031 allows owners of investment real estate to sell property and defer capital gains taxes by reinvesting in like-kind replacement property. Mr. Vassar clarify what qualifies as investment property (including partial primary residences with rental/Airbnb use), how the IRS intent test works, and why early planning with a CPA/attorney matters to avoid disqualification. Ryan explains strict deadlines -- like the 45 days to identify and 180 days to close on a new property -- plus strategies like backup options and Delaware statutory trusts. He also discusses reverse exchanges when buying before selling. Together they cover misconceptions about needing to replace full sale value for full deferral; the unregulated nature of qualified intermediaries who hold sale proceeds in escrow; and, how repeated 1031s can support estate planning via stepped-up basis for heirs. You can connect with attorney Ryan Vassar, Esq. below:Website: www.ipx1031.com/vassarLinkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/ryanvassar20Twitter: ryanvassar1031Instagram: ryanvassar1031Please SUBSCRIBE!I’m Dian Griesel aka @SilverDisobedience to my hundreds of thousands of monthly blog readers. Somatic Psychotherapy Explained: Embodiment, Self-Regulation, Co-Regulation & Self-Worth | Dr. Ann Saffi Biasetti
Host Dian Griesel interviews Dr. Ann Saffi Biasetti about somatic psychotherapy and how “soma” (the body) can be used in a bottom-up approach to build self-awareness through sensing and felt experience, not just cognitive insight. Biasetti explains slowing down sessions to notice repeated words, tears, posture shifts, and tension, and describes how somatic work can lead to embodiment -- a more connected, compassionate relationship with the body. They discuss interoception (including heartbeat awareness), its link to deeper self-understanding and compassion, and how self-regulation is homeostasis marked by change, resilience, and the ability to return to center. The conversation covers flexibility versus rigidity, the full range of emotions, toxic positivity, belonging, and co-regulation via attunement and social engagement, including how early experiences and body differences can shape self-worth and body image.

Gould shares how he entered the field through an early eBay cross-border example and emphasizes that translation is broader than words, including context and nonverbal nuance. Shannon Mann aka @OysterToPearls Shares Thoughts on Midlife Influencing, Breast Cancer, and The ProAge Project
Host Dian Griesel interviews midlife fashion influencer Shannon Mann well-known across social media as @OystersToPearls about how her creative roots led from sharing food and recipes to fashion content, and how a 2021 breast cancer diagnosis prompted her to use her platform more purposefully by showing “life during” and after cancer and connecting directly with other women for support.
Shannon discusses continuing to show up publicly through treatment, the importance of mindset, self-care, and exercise, and how meaningful relationships formed through social media matter more than the platform itself.
She also explains her fun outfit-change videos, being her own filming crew with an editor, the evolving realities of brand work (time demands, negotiation, gifting, and contract terms like perpetuity), her daily routine, and why influencing requires intense work.

Gerd Gigerenzer, Ph.D, on Risk Literacy, Heuristics, and Making Decisions Under Uncertainty
@SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics podcast host, Dian Griesel interviews psychologist and risk expert Gerd Gigerenzer about decision-making in an uncertain world; distinguishing calculable risks (like roulette) from uncertainty where “37s happen” (war, relationships, crises) and more. Gigerenzer explains that logic and consistency-based rationality don’t capture how people actually understand language and act, and argues that under uncertainty optimization is a fiction, so people rely on heuristics and Herbert Simon’s “satisficing,” which he links to modern option overload (e.g., Tinder) and unhappiness. They discuss learning to live with uncertainty, courage and responsibility in choices, and the benefits of collaborative decision-making (pilots vs. solo).
Gigerenzer warns about groupthink and defensive decisions in business and “defensive medicine” driven by US tort law. He highlights poor risk literacy (CT scan vs. Fukushima radiation), recommends better information and reading, and critiques tech-driven attention and mental health harms.
Bio:
Gerd Gigerenzer is a German psychologist and decision scientist known for his research on bounded rationality, heuristics, and risk literacy. His work explores how people make decisions under uncertainty, emphasizing the effectiveness of simple rules and intuitive reasoning over complex models.
Notable books authored by Gerd Gigerenzer include: Gut Feelings, Risk Savvy, Calculated Risks, Simple Heuristics That Make Us Smart
Central to Gigerenzer’s work is the concept of “ecological rationality,” which argues that human decision-making strategies evolve to fit real-world environments rather than conforming to idealized models. He champions the use of “fast and frugal” heuristics—simple cognitive shortcuts that often outperform complex algorithms when time, data, or computational resources are limited.

Maintain Weight Loss for Life: Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson on Identity Shifts, Food Addiction, and the Ozempic Era
Dian Griesel welcomes Susan Peirce Thompson, PhD, author of Maintain, to discuss why lasting weight loss often requires more than willpower, especially in the “Ozempic revolution.”
Thompson describes GLP-1 medications as a powerful but imperfect tool, noting weight regain, adaptation over time, the ability for sugar and processed foods to “break through,” and many people stopping within two years.
Dr. Thompson also raises concerns about reduced vagal tone and blunted intuition. She outlines three identity shifts for long-term maintenance—becoming devoted (a consistent lifestyle with strong support networks); resourced (new coping skills and deeper inner work instead of eating over stress); and, liberated (moving beyond the food/weight struggle and “finish line anxiety”).
Dr. Thompson explains Bright Line Eating’s clear boundaries, including no sugar or flour, and how structure can create lasting freedom.

What if you could experience the speed, pressure, strategy, and excitement of being a fighter pilot—without ever leaving the ground? In this episode, Dian Griesel speaks with Tim “Monk” Miller, a retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel, former F/A-18 pilot, and founder of the Strike Fighter League.
Strike Fighter League combines aviation, advanced flight simulation, competitive gaming, and live sports-style broadcasting to bring the world of fighter aviation to a broader audience. Tim explains how the league works, why debriefing and constructive criticism are central to improvement, and how the discipline, accountability, and resilience required in the cockpit also apply to gaming, leadership, and life.
They also discuss SFL’s first online tournaments, its plans for team competition, and the vision for a live professional series combining esports, aviation technology, and the excitement of an air show.
Strike Fighter LeagueThe world's first professional air combat sport didn't come out of nowhere — it came out of a cockpit. Founder and CEO Tim "Monk" Miller, retired Marine Corps Lt. Col., TOPGUN graduate, and former squadron commander, sits down to tell the story: why the ethos of fighter aviation — the discipline, the reps, the brutally honest debrief — deserved an arena of its own.

Are Humans Really ‘Superior’? Primatologist Christine Webb on Human ExceptionalismHost Dian Griesel interviews primatologist and author Christine Webb about humans’ role in the animal kingdom and her book, The Arrogant Ape: The Myth of Human Exceptionalism and Why It Matters. Webb explains what primatologists study, how she was influenced by Jane Goodall and Frans de Waal, and clarifies that humans did not descend from modern apes but share a common ancestor with chimpanzees and bonobos. She argues evolution is not a progressive ladder but a branching tree, and that ecological relationships are better understood as food webs rather than hierarchical food chains. Webb defines human exceptionalism as the belief that humans are separate from and superior to nature, calls it scientifically unsound, and links it to the ecological crisis. They discuss love, creativity in animals, dominance hierarchies, cultural learning of exceptionalism, and redefining evolutionary “success” through cooperation and longevity.

Do You Really Own Your Home? Title Insurance Explained with Michael Haltman of Hallmark AbstractDian Griesel speaks with Michael Haltman of Hallmark Abstract about how title insurance helps ensure a homebuyer receives good, clean, clear title by researching the past for issues like unpaid mortgages, liens, boundary line disputes, estate heir claims, and other encumbrances. Haltman explains that title insurance is backward-looking, typically required by lenders, and usually purchased as a one-time premium for long-term peace of mind, though claims are uncommon; he also describes how property searches are conducted across different New York jurisdictions and what goes into a policy. The conversation broadens to Haltman’s Wall Street and mortgage background, how the 2008 crisis led him and his wife to start a title company, his writing and podcasting, observations on interest rates and consumer debt, and his focus on gratitude, charitable work, and support for veterans.

Ty and Donnie -- better known online as the @Monkee_bois -- are bringing the nostalgic power of the 1980s back to life with humor, music, retro style, and a whole lot of positivity. Here's their Instagram:
In this episode, we explore why 1980s music and pop culture continue to resonate across generations, and how two brothers turned their love of the decade into a growing online community. From classic rock and hair bands to vintage fashion, band t-shirts, unforgettable soundtracks, and the feel-good energy of the 80s, the Monkee Bois have found a way to make retro culture feel fresh, fun, and deeply connecting.
Raised on legendary artists like Survivor, AC/DC, Poison, Queen, Journey, and other 80s icons, Ty and Donnie share how the music of their childhood shaped their humor, creativity, and content. What began as casual vlog-style videos has evolved into viral social media moments that celebrate the joy, authenticity, and shared memories tied to 1980s culture.
We also talk about why nostalgia is so powerful today. For some, the 80s bring back memories of youth, freedom, mixtapes, concerts, MTV, and big personalities. For younger audiences, the decade offers a colorful escape into music, fashion, and pop culture that still feels bold and original. Through their content, the @monkeebois are bridging generations and reminding fans that connection can happen through a song, a shirt, a joke, or a shared memory.
This conversation is also about the positive side of social media. In a digital world often filled with negativity, Ty and Donnie have built a space centered on humor, acceptance, music appreciation, and community. Their success shows what can happen when creators stay authentic, lean into what they love, and invite others to be part of the fun.
If you love 1980s music, retro pop culture, classic rock, nostalgic social media creators, viral brother duos, or stories about how passion becomes community, this episode is for you.

Davy Crockett in Washington City: Politics, the 1830s, and a New Country Musical -- with Richard ByrneFrom New York City, host Dian Griesel talks with writer Richard Byrne about his new country-music stage work, “Congressman Davy,” for which he wrote the book and lyrics (with music by Dean Schlabowski of the Waco Brothers). Byrne explains how a late-night rewatch of Disney’s Davy Crockett starring Fess Parker sparked research into Crockett’s political life, his rivalry with Andrew Jackson, the rise of the Whigs, plus Crockett’s brief moment as a potential presidential candidate. Dian and Richard discuss Washington City in the 1830s -- including its lack of sewers and trash collection, pigs in the streets, and stark class differences -- plus key figures in the musical like journalist Anne Royall and boardinghouse proprietors Mrs. Ball and Mrs. Brown. Byrne shares the project’s 2024 staged reading in DC, the released soundtrack, and a free online radio-play version debuting June 29.

Grandma Gets Real: How Tanya Ruiz Turned Barbie, Dolls & Miniatures Into a Viral Influencer CareerHost Dian Griesel interviews Tanya Ruiz, creator of the Instagram and Facebook accounts @GrandmaGetsReal about how her lifelong relationship with Barbie evolved from childhood play to teenage fashion modeling, then to speaking on body image and considering the impact of Barbie as a cultural reflection. After her husband became ill and she stopped traveling, her granddaughters found her speaking-prop Barbies in the attic, including a Happy Family Grandma Barbie, which sparked a new Instagram project: building a realistic 1/6-scale “plastic parallel universe” using detailed miniatures. Tanya describes discovering tiny food and other collectibles online, creating dioramas and 14 miniature rooms, posting up to three times daily, going viral in 2020, growing to over two million followers, and working with some brands despite being told she wasn’t their “demographic,” while continuing to champion creativity and hobby-driven joy.

Spencer West on Breaking Free: Stop Following Expectations and Start Following Yourself
Dian Griesel welcomes Spencer West, author of "Breaking Free: Stop Following Expectations and Start Following Yourself," to discuss resilience, identity, and human potential. West shares how being born with sacral agenesis led to leg amputations at age five and how the expectation to be “just like everyone else” shaped his childhood, education, and coming out as gay. Spencer describes feeling trapped after college while working in Phoenix, then finding renewed purpose through a volunteer trip to East Africa that inspired him to move to Toronto and work in international development. West recounts climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with friends while raising $500,000 for clean water for 12,500 people! SilverDisobedience® Perception Dynamics™ host Dian Griesel interviews renowned dermatologist Dr. Lynne Haven about how aesthetic treatments relate to identity, confidence, aging, and also the desire to look like yourself rather than chase perfection. Dr. Haven explains that most patients seek to feel more vital and aligned. She emphasizes listening, personalization, restraint, and choosing practitioners with not only the best knowledge and expertise, but also essentials such as skill, artistry, and integrity. Together, they discuss social media filters and unrealistic expectations; motivations, such as life events; menopause and related collagen loss; and increased concerns with GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, such as loss of facial volume and hair shedding. Dr. Haven shared ways to mitigate these side effects with nutrition, slowing weight loss, and devices that tighten skin and build muscle. The conversation covers differences in aging by sex; the mind-body impact of Botox; noninvasive dermatology vs. surgery; risks of unqualified injectors; sun protection; evidence-based skincare, including vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and retinoids; acne treatments; skin-cancer warning signs; lasers for sun damage; and considerations for different skin tones.

Why You Don’t Do What’s Best for You (and How to Fix It)!
~Eric Edmeades on Evolutionary Mismatch, WildFit & Habit Cessation
In this SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics conversation Dian Griesel is joined by self-motivation and leadership expert Eric Edmeades who explains why people often don’t do what they know is best, arguing that instincts, habits, and nervous-system cues shaped for survival can misfire in modern life due to “evolutionary mismatch.” He describes how behaviors like smoking, vaping, and phone scrolling trigger real chemical rewards through mismatched stimuli, and why today’s pervasive stress differs from ancestral peak danger. Edmeades connects these ideas to his WildFit approach, outlining seasonal metabolic “fuel systems” (carbs/sugar, fat, and protein burning), nutrition quality, and the value of muscle density and movement for lymphatic flow and longevity. He discusses the origins of his book Post-Diabetic and the concept of being “post-diabetic” after reversal.
He shares practical environmental ideas (natural sound, light, air, water) and offers free resources:

Soulmate Astrology Explained with Neda Far: Birth Charts, Compatibility, Retrogrades & AstrocartographySilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics host Dian Griesel interviews astrologer Neda Farr, who has studied astrology for over 10 years and now specializes in “soulmate astrology.” Neda explains that a birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment of birth and that sun-sign compatibility is often inaccurate because it ignores other key placements like the moon, rising, Mars, and Mercury, plus aspects and houses. She outlines zodiac elements (fire, water, air, earth) and describes personality traits tied to each, noting that chart clusters can override sun-sign stereotypes. Neda discusses her soulmate readings, compatibility “placements,” and how she uses birth data and astrocartography to suggest where and how someone may meet a soulmate. She warns that accurate birth time is crucial, clarifies newspaper horoscopes, touches on evolved vs. unevolved signs and karma, and explains retrogrades (especially Mercury). She also shares her app, Star Crossed, which offers soulmate readings and upcoming features.

Jeffrey Sussman on the Rise, Decline, and Survival of the American Mafia | Mafia Hits, Misses, Wars & ProsecutionsIn this @SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics Podcast, host Dian Griesel interviews author Jeffrey Sussman about his book, "Mafia Hits, Misses, Wars, and Prosecutions: The Rise and Decline of the Mob in America," and the personal experiences that sparked his fascination with organized crime, including mob intimidation tied to garment-industry trucking and unions and a designer relative forced into a mafia partnership. Sussman argues the mafia adapts and survives despite government crackdowns, highlighting Robert Kennedy’s prosecutions, the RICO statute, and the Commission trial. He discusses pivotal events and histories such as the Castellammarese War -- a bloody power struggle over control by the Mafia in the USA; formation of the five New York families; the National Crime Syndicate; and, claims from the House Assassinations Committee materials about Marcello, Trafficante, and Hoffa conspiring to kill president John F. Kennedy (JFK) with Oswald as a fall guy. He also recounts stories about FBI informant and killer Greg Scarpa and corrupt “mafia cops,” and previews a future book on mob control of the garment center.

Project Runway Model Anastasia on Manifesting, Athletic Modeling, and Building a Creative Career
In this episode of the SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics podcast host Dian Griesel interviews Anastasia, a four-season Project Runway model who just wrapped Season 22. They discuss what it means to be chosen by designers for the finale and why Anastasiia sees modeling as the job of "selling the clothes." Anastasia also explains her perspectives on “manifesting” as structured goal-setting, discusses embracing an athletic, muscular build on the modeling runway despite fashion industry labels, and shares influences like Kobe Bryant’s “touch the line” mindset. She describes her background as a dancer (hip hop, popping, locking, vogueing), her move from Russia to China for dance contracts, and then to Brooklyn to pursue opportunities. Anastasia outlines her learning approach -- seeking mentors, researching, and cross-applying skills -- plus her early-morning routine, favorite books, and next goals: making her own film, pursuing a Magic Mike hosting job, continuing Project Runway, and finishing her book.

Drummer Alex Cohen on Resilience, Brain Tumor Recovery, and “Eldritch” Rhythms In this SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics podcast, host Dian Griesel interviews renowned drummer and educator Alex Cohen about drumming, resilience, and how a seizure led to the discovery of a brain tumor and life-saving surgery at Duke. Alex shares how he started drums at 12 as a bullied kid with little natural talent, practiced relentlessly for years, then experienced a sudden, dramatic jump in rhythmic ability after the seizure, including complex limb independence and advanced tuplets that drew millions of views online. He describes the fear of a possible glioblastoma, the support of his mother, a connection to Duke through a childhood friend lost to glioblastoma, radiation and pill-form chemo, loss of right peripheral vision, and family hardships. Alex documents his journey in his book “Rhythms of Resilience,” discusses teaching through step-by-step methods, and explains balancing extreme rhythmic concepts with serving the music in bands.

Does God Belong in the Workplace? Jeanne Stafford on the Devotion Factor and Time with Intention
In this episode of the SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics host Dian Griesel talks with Jeanne Stafford about whether God belongs in the workplace and how “the devotion factor” helps people connect to something eternal, clarify purpose, and manage time with intention. Stafford explains devotion as a chosen commitment rooted in doing, and shares how she applied her method after being released from a Forbes contributor contract, using the experience to reassess worth, take risks, and write about Holy Week and her Catholic faith. She emphasizes that nonbelievers can benefit by devoting time to other “eternal” anchors like nature, love, and family, illustrating with a client who built a holistic financial services firm inspired by surfing and service. They discuss head-versus-heart noise, morning routines, perspective-shifting moments, and Stafford’s advice to remove one to three nonessential things to create space for what matters.

Aging, Memory & Nutrition: Dr. John Lewis on Vitamin D/K2, Fiber, and Aloe/Rice Bran Polysaccharides in Alzheimer’s Research
In this SilverDisobedience© Perception Dynamics™ podcast Host Dian Griesel interviews John Lewis, Ph.D. about aging, memory, and nutrition; challenging overhyped high-protein advice for largely sedentary Americans while emphasizing key needs like vitamin D (noting widespread deficiency); and, pairing D3 with K2 to direct calcium into bones. They discuss the importance of dietary fiber for gut transit time and potential disease-risk reduction, and Dr. Lewis argues most essential nutrients come from plants, with B12 and K2 synthesized by bacteria. Dr. Lewis describes 20 years of research on complex polysaccharides from aloe vera and rice bran and a 12-month clinical trial in 34 people with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s showing significant ADAS-Cog improvements at 9 and 12 months, along with blood-marker changes including improved CD4:CD8 ratio, reduced TNF alpha and VEGF, and a 286% increase in CD14 cells. He explains the nutrition model of supporting the body with raw materials, notes funding barriers in academia, and shares his company, Dr. Lewis Nutrition, and its flagship formulation.

Thomas Hodgkinson on Coolness: Why Trying to Be Cool Is Uncool (and How to Live in the Now)
In this SilverDisobedience© Perception Dynamics™ podcast conversation Dian Griesel welcomes author Thomas Hodgkinson, whose book How to Be Cool: The 150 Essential Idols, Ideals and Other Cool S*** explores the elusive, self-defeating nature of defining coolness. Dian recounts how Hodgkinson proved his own cool by promptly redirecting her to another Thomas Hodgkinson she was trying to find -- and how he provided the correct email! They discuss cool as a state of being rather than actions, the paradox of caring versus indifference, and how fame and social-media “likes” distort the idea of cool. Hodgkinson traces cool’s roots to early 20th-century American jazz and African American culture as a “third way” for the powerless, emphasizing living in the present. They examine oppositional cool, talent and effortlessness, risky “now” living, mortality’s role in wisdom, childlike creativity, and examples from history and culture including Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, Clint Eastwood, Keith Richards, Oscar Wilde, Bob Dylan, and Bjork.

Buk describes Wyoming’s vast, rural landscape and how its isolation motivated her to create a connective project documenting women’s lives through portraits, writing, a traveling art show and more. Navy SEAL Don Mann on Macro Goals, Mindset, and Elite Leadership Lessons
Silver Disobedience© Perception Dynamics™ host Dian Griesel sits down with former Navy SEAL and special operations technician Don Mann — author of more than 20 books, including the New York Times best-selling autobiography Inside SEAL Team SIX: My Life and Missions with America's Elite Warriors. With over 40 years of competitive racing experience, Don has completed two Ironman triathlons in a single day, was once ranked 38th in the world as a triathlete, and has produced and directed more multi-day, multi-sport adventure races, triathlons, and SEAL training events than anyone else on the planet. He is also the TV host of The Mission, Face Off, and Surviving Mann.
In this conversation, Mann traces his path to the Navy — sparked by patriotism, a love of fitness, and the legendary "Men with Green Faces" video — through a 21-year SEAL career that included SEAL Team 6, followed by 25 years as a CIA contractor. He breaks down his framework for tackling extreme challenges using "macro goals" and "micro goals," a no-quit mindset, and hard-won lessons from endurance events, including a near-fatal Everest attempt that brought on both high-altitude pulmonary and cerebral edema. Mann also shares how SEAL principles translate into business leadership, the stories behind his 23 books, and what happens when he puts civilians through grueling training on his TV shows. He closes with a simple but powerful daily charge: get stronger, get faster, get smarter — and do something good for someone every day.

Dr. Srini Pillay on the Law of Attraction: Anxiety, Belief, and Aligning Intention With Action
In this Silver Disobedience© Perception Dynamics™ podcast episode host Dian Griesel converses with Harvard-trained psychiatrist Srini Pillay, M.D. about the Law of Attraction, clarifying it from “awareness,” and exploring whether an opposite “repelling” force exists. Dr. Pillay links repelling to anxiety, mirror neurons, and fear-driven attention bias that makes people focus on threats and miss positive experiences. He argues intentions arise unconsciously, are strengthened by emotion and action, and notes medicine rarely supports simple one-way causation. The conversation highlights belief’s physiological impact via placebo effects, inspirational examples like the four-minute mile, and reported healings at Lourdes. They discuss identity and reinvention, including goal vs implementation intentions, “Psychological Halloween,” defining an ideal self, and aligning values to reduce stress. Dr. Pillay and Dian also touch on social media pressures, civility across differences, AI-driven career reinvention, and the benefits of designed indulgence.

Civil Discourse in the Internet Age: Dr. Breeda McGrath on Curiosity, Bias, and De-escalation
For this Silver Disobedience Perception Dynamics podcast, Dian Griesel interviews Dr. Breeda McGrath, an American Psychological Association member involved in bringing civil discourse education to schools, about why public conversation has deteriorated in the internet era and how to improve it. Dr. McGrath defines civil discourse as respectful engagement -- especially amid disagreement -- grounded in curiosity and learning. They discuss how debates shift from facts to emotions when people perceive threats to rights, resources, identity, or community, and how values and personal stakes drive even advocacy on others’ behalf. Dr. McGrath recommends reflection to identify when discussions become personal, recognizing cognitive biases and blind spots, and using a biopsychosocial approach to de-escalate: calm the body, examine psychological triggers, and consider social dynamics like “show mode” and relationship stakes. Dian & Dr. McGrath also highlight focusing on local community, managing news intake, noticing positive interactions, and staying flexible and open to updating beliefs.

Why We Still Love Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours — Alan Light on Legacy, Streaming, and Cultural Afterlife
For this Silver Disobedience© Perception Dynamics™ podcast, Dian hosts writer and music journalist Alan Light to discuss why Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours still resonates across generations and inspired his book Don’t Stop: Why We Still Love Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.
Light recounts his background at Rolling Stone, Spin, and Vibe, and his earlier books on “Hallelujah” and Prince’s Purple Rain, explaining his interest in culturally transformative projects with long afterlives. He describes noticing Rumours as a rare 1970s album embraced by post-millennials, citing its persistent charting, streaming dominance, and recurring pop-culture moments (TikTok, the cranberry-juice skateboard video, Glee, Daisy Jones & the Six). Light shares insights from interviews with younger listeners, highlighting the band’s gender makeup, rotating lead singers, universal relationship themes, distinctive rhythm section, and how newer audiences hear the album beyond a “breakup” narrative while also discussing shifts from bands to solo artists and the role of technology.

Depression Explained: Clinical Definition, Root Causes & Nutritional Psychiatry with Dr. James Greenblatt
Silver Disobedience© Perception Dynamics™ host Dian Griesel interviews psychiatrist Dr. James Greenblatt about what clinical depression is versus normal sadness, how anxiety can co-occur, and why depression should be approached as a treatable medical illness with underlying contributors. Dr. Greenblatt contrasts standard symptom-based prescribing with a functional psychiatry model that looks for biological causes such as nutrient deficiencies (iron, B12, vitamin D), thyroid or hormone issues, malnutrition, celiac/gluten sensitivity, and genetic vulnerabilities that affect nutrient needs and metabolism. They discuss diet individuality, the importance of eliminating ultra-processed foods and refined sugar, and concerns about overuse and risks of SSRIs (including suicidal ideation, especially with malnutrition) and GLP-1 drugs (reduced micronutrient intake and potential disordered eating). Dr. Greenblatt introduces his consumer-focused book “Finally Hopeful,” his work with lithium orotate, training programs, a planned virtual clinic, and the potential of AI to integrate records, labs, and genetics for personalized care.

Duchamp Takes New York: How One Artist Helped Spark Modern Art in America | John StrausbaughHost Dian Griesel (Silver Disobedience) welcomes back New York biographer John Strausbaugh to discuss his new book, “Duchamp Takes New York,” exploring how Marcel Duchamp’s 1913 “Nude Descending a Staircase” stood out at the Armory Show and helped jolt American art from classical tradition into modernism. Strausbaugh explains why New Yorkers found Duchamp’s work amusing and provocative, how Duchamp escaped wartime Paris to arrive in New York as a celebrated figure, and how he challenged definitions of art with early conceptual and minimalist ideas. They also discuss why artists often gain value after death, what made 20th-century New York a magnet for cultural innovators, and the city’s embrace of bold individuality. Strausbaugh mentions a possible future subject: Victoria Woodhull.

From NYPD Detective to Streetwise Communication: Anthony Celano on Role-Play Training, Leadership, and Workplace Conflict
Dian interviews Anthony Celano, a former NYPD detective squad commander with 22 years of experience in organized crime and narcotics, about how he built StreetWise Communication Trainings after retiring and becoming a licensed private investigator. Dissatisfied with generic, state-mandated security training, Celano created customized, scenario-based role-play programs where groups collectively determine the best ways to handle difficult people and high-stress workplace situations. He explains transferable policing fundamentals—observation, inquiry, credibility, supervision, and de-escalation—plus techniques like feigning understanding to gather facts from both sides of a conflict. Celano also discusses trends including rising workplace hostility, the importance of fair, firm supervision and managing perceptions, and how client-specific training can surface hidden issues. Lastly he shares how real-world personalities inspired his Sergeant Markie mystery novels.
