A Football Coach in Heels: Shattering Stereotypes with Mark Bryan | What?s Underneath: Masculinity

This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp, the world?s largest therapy platform. Visit http://BetterHelp.com/WhatsUnderneath today to get 10% off your first month. Mark Bryan is a cis, straight-identifying, traditionally masculine man who works as a robotic engineer and football coach?and also loves wearing skirts and heels. He has unintentionally started challenging traditional gender norms by proudly incorporating so-called ?Women's clothes? into his wardrobe, rejecting the idea that it says anything about one?s sexual orientation or that clothes should be gendered. Mark recounts the pivotal college moment when he first experimented with high heels and, after a 40-year hiatus, rediscovered the empowering sensation of integrating them into his daily style. The conversation delves into the assumptions people make about Mark's sexual orientation and explores the process of communicating his style shift to both family and colleagues. He navigates the intricate paradox of advocating for clothing being just clothes and needing to be free from gender associations, while acknowledging the power they possess in helping individuals feel authentically aligned with their true selves. This dialogue is a powerful reminder that growth often comes from accountability and challenging discussions. Lily and Elisa have an important conversation with Mark about his relationship with the LGBTQIA+ community, addressing past mistakes. Through it, Mark learns in real-time how he can become a better ally, embracing his shared mission with the queer community in fostering a safe space for self-expression. MARK QUOTATIONS: "We should have more concerns in this world other than what people are wearing. Me wearing skirts should be the least of your worries. We should be worried about racism. We should be worried about wars. The world's not going to end because Mark Bryan is wearing a skirt in high heels." [Regarding missteps and past comments that caused harm]: "I just kind of looked at it as something to be saddened that it happened and then look forward to seeing how to correct it and make myself a better person and use it as a learning experience. It's a pretty beautiful way to look at it. It's the only way to look at life. So if it's something that disappoints you or saddens you...to try to find something positive about it. " "I get a lot of comments on my Instagram, "Hey, be a man, you know, wear pants." I said, "I am a man, but I'm just wearing a skirt."" He just said that I was a good kid in a shit world." "There's no difference in the kid in Pakistan who told me that he couldn't talk about his abuse because his bullies in his village would kill him...It's not different with the model who's throwing up in her cup for her photo shoot and me when I was about to shoot up a school. It's all just expressions of I'm not good enough inside myself, and I think I need to burn myself apart to fit life." "Treat that kid in the dark that tells himself that he hates himself constantly and tells himself that everything in his life is bad and he's the fault of it. Tell him that he's wrong because everybody else is telling him that he's right. And to me, that's a simple equation. " "Being man enough is being comfortable in yourself and realizing that when you woke up today, you were good enough. And tomorrow you're going to be good enough too. And it's okay to fail, and it's okay to cry, and it's okay to be vulnerable, and it's okay to let someone know that you love them. And it's okay to let someone know that you're hurt, and it's okay to reach out for help." (21:30) and distinguishing between ignorance and curiosity (31:38) provides a rich perspective that can help break down societal prejudices. About Jordan Walker Ross Jordan is an actor (THE CHOSEN), screenwriter and host of the podcast ?What?s Your Limp?? Jordan has Cerebral Palsy and Scoliosis and by the age of 7, he had already undergone half a dozen major surgeries, including a full spinal fusion, and had several near death experiences. He discovered his love for acting at the age of 6 and spent the vast majority of his career being told no and having casting directors, agents, directors, etc. telling him to ?lose the limp?. However, it was that very limp - the things Jordan was most insecure about - that led him to his most fulfilling and successful role yet - playing Little James on The Chosen. Now, Jordan is determined to use his platform as an actor and his podcast, What?s Your Limp?, to help others learn to love their own ?limps? and to use them to their advantage, rather than perceiving them as flaws or weaknesses. Brown Enough Presents: Rubirosa by Christopher Rivas

Episode Description: Man Enough is proud to introduce Rubirosa, a podcast by Brown Enough host and Man Enough guest host, Christopher Rivas, in partnership with Stitcher.  Rubirosa is a documentary podcast produced by Stitcher and hosted by Christopher Rivas (Call Me Kat) in which Rivas explores the life of Porfirio Rubirosa, the man who inspired the character of James Bond. Besides being a Dominican diplomat, Porfirio was an international polo champion, a race-car driver, and a pilot. He was a renowned casanova, who was married five times to women including Barbara Hutton and Doris Duke. He spoke five languages and twice became the wealthiest man in the world. Rivas, a Dominican-American actor, author, and storyteller, not only offers a portrait of Porfirio?s life but also investigates the whitewashing of Hollywood and considers how his childhood may have been different had more of his favorite movie heroes looked like him. The character and life of Rubirosa reveal so much about the dichotomy of masculinity across cultures and generations while Christopher Rivas and expert guests work to unravel the mysteries of a man that was so infatuating to the men and women of his time. We?re sure you?ll enjoy this episode as much as we did!   New episodes every Monday ?? Surviving War: Friendship, Manhood and Vulnerability with Major Tom Schueman

Major Tom Schueman, The Man Enough Podcast?s first war veteran and active duty military guest, discusses male friendship, positive masculine characteristics that are not binary or the property of men alone, how being trained to be alert all the time on the battlefield can make it hard to be vulnerable and present in the rest of life, how knowing how to handle any kind of physical wound does not prepare you to address emotional or psychological wounds, and his belief that we need to learn how to reintegrate warriors back into society after combat like Native Americans and the Spartans used to do. Ultimately, he believes that healthy manhood is rooted in finding purpose and serving something greater than yourself.  New episodes every Monday ?? War on Gender with Comedian Omid Djalili

The war on gender has many fronts. In a time of unprecedented division among genders, comedian Omid Djalili shares a cautionary tale of the history of Iran?s two revolutions, how women-led revolutions are our best chance of liberating us all, and how men can make a difference from the West. Around the world women?s rights to freedom, justice and civil rights are being infringed upon and, in the case of Iran, violently attacked. The protests and revolution are a struggle for freedom and equality. This is not a fight against the hijab or against men. It is a fight against ignorance and as such it is supported fiercely by the men of Iran who are suffering a majority of casualties in their activism. New episodes every Monday ?? Background on the Iran Revolution The protests in Iran we are seeing today erupted in mid-September after the death of Mahsa Amini, while she was in the custody of the ?morality police? for allegedly violating the country?s hijab law by showing a bit of her hair. Women and youth have been leading the protests, demanding social freedom and political change, gender equality and the end of the state?s regime.  Crowds have continued to gather in defiance of the authorities even as the government recently pledged harsh punishment for defiers ? including executions. While numbers are difficult to verify due to the lack of independent reporting in Iran, 19,200 protesters have been detained and 469 people including 63 children and 32 women have been killed since the protests began, according to the latest figures by the Human Rights Activists News Agency, or HRANA.  About Omid Djalili: Omid is a critically acclaimed actor and stand up comedian. He recently starred in the Netflix Global drama The Letter for the King and the HBO/BBC series His Dark Materials. A Perrier Award nominee in 2002 and Edinburgh Comedy Award Panel Prize winner in 2016, Omid is known for his work in projects like The Mummy, Casanova, and, The Omid Djalili Show, and a Whoopi Goldberg's NBC sitcom Whoopi.
