On Monday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that undated or misdated mail ballots should not be counted in the 2024 election, reaffirming a prior decision and hampering Sen. Bob Casey?s (D) efforts to challenge the results of his race with Dave McCormick (R). The Associated Press and other outlets have called the race for McCormick, and he attended the Senate?s orientation for new members last week.

On Sunday, President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range weaponry ? called Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS ? to strike within Russian territory. Then on Tuesday morning, Ukraine used the ATACMS for the first time, reportedly striking a Russian arsenal in the Bryansk region 70 miles from the Ukrainian border. Additionally, the Pentagon confirmed that the White House intends to issue $7.1 billion in military aid to Ukraine through Presidential Drawdown Authority before the end of Biden?s term in January. The news comes as the Russia-Ukraine war hit its 1,000th day on Tuesday.

On Thursday, President-elect Donald Trump announced he would nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Kennedy, who ended his independent bid for president in August and endorsed Trump, is a longtime environmental and public health activist whose views on vaccines and other healthcare issues have run counter to the medical establishment. If confirmed by the Senate, he would lead the largest health agency in the U.S., made up of organizations like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

More than a week has now passed since Election Day, and before we fully pivot to focusing on the end of Biden's presidency, the current Supreme Court term, the new Congress, Trump?s appointees and the incoming administration, I think it's important to give one (potentially final) breakdown of the election we just had.
I will discuss this in four parts:
How should we accurately describe the results of this election? What was the deciding factor in this election? What other issues made a difference on the margins? What pre-election narratives should be put to bed?I hope that, by going through these four parts, I can give our listeners a better understanding of what happened and be ready to see what?s coming in the near future.
Everyone in the media seems to want this election to be about the issue they care most about, or to find a way to answer ?why Trump won? or ?what happened to the Democratic party? in a few sentences. I think that kind of quick summation is impossible. Elections are always decided by a confluence of several factors, some more important than others, and today I?m trying to lay out those factors I suspect were most relevant. That?s the goal: not to give a single, definitive answer, but a holistic and overarching one.

On Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump tweeted that any Republican senator hoping to obtain the position of majority leader would have to approve of recess appointments for his cabinet nominees. Typically, nominees for Cabinet positions, executive offices, or high-level ambassadorships undergo a hearing where they are asked questions by members of the Senate who then vote on whether to confirm an appointee. Only a simple majority is needed for confirmation.

In the madness of election week, we forgot to note that we are off for Veteran's Day today. As longtime readers and listeners know, the Tangle team observes all federal bank holidays, and also takes a couple "recesses" throughout the year around major holidays and congressional breaks (if Congress can take recesses, why can?t we as news reporters and consumers?).
While we are off today, we still wanted to provide you with a little bit of content. So, below, we've compiled a list of some of recent publications and interviews that you might be interested in, as well as today's "quick hits."
On Friday, we published an election-focused reader mailbag newsletter. We answered questions about the future of democracy, "missing votes," purported sexism in the election, how different news outlets call state elections, the argument that Trump is better for women's rights, and much more. You can read it here (newsletter members only). Also on Friday, we published a members-only podcast interview with Ken Block, the election fraud expert hired by the Trump campaign in 2020 to help them litigate election fraud claims. We chatted with him about what he did (and didn't) find. You can listen here (podcast members only).I recently appeared on the ?Being Jewish? podcast with Jonah Platt to discuss my journey with Judaism, journalistic integrity today, and the Tangle mission. You can listen here. We have a lot of new content on our YouTube channel, including our election night livestream. You can check out the latest here.If you?re a new Tangle listener, you might also be interested in checking out my TED talk from April, in which I discuss politicized language choices and how even small changes can help us all have better conversations with people who think differently than we do. At 4:00 pm ET on Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed a crowd of supporters at her alma mater of Howard University in Washington, D.C., to concede the election to President-elect Donald Trump. Harris said that she called to congratulate Trump on the victory and would help aid his administration?s transition but urged attendees to keep fighting for the issues that motivated her campaign.

Former President Donald Trump will become the 47th president of the United States, with all major newsoutlets calling the race in his favor as of Wednesday morning. Trump is poised for a sweep of all seven swing states ? Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin ? and holds a 51%?47.5% lead in the popular vote with a large percentage of the vote in West Coast states still to be reported.
Trump appears likely to surpass his performance in the 2016 election, when he won 306 Electoral College votes but lost the popular vote by roughly 2%. He is also on track to flip every swing state President Joe Biden won in 2020. In a victory speech at 2:30am ET on Wednesday morning, Trump declared that his return to the White House will usher in a ?golden age of America.?

A couple weeks ago, I made my final predictions about the 2024 election.
In that post, one of my headline predictions was that Vice President Kamala Harris would win Pennsylvania but lose the election. I also argued that Trump had a path to winning in Michigan, that Democrats would win the House, and that Republicans would come away with 53 seats in the Senate.
Since then, the race hasn?t fundamentally changed, but it has developed in a lot of interesting ways. I?ve been jotting down notes over the last few weeks and today, I?m emptying my notebook as we head into the final days of the race.
So: Here are 25 thoughts with four days to go until Election Day.

On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a speech at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., that was billed as the closing argument of her campaign. Harris delivered the speech at the same site as former President Donald Trump?s address to his supporters on January 6, 2021, which preceded their march to the U.S. Capitol. Harris?s campaign chair, Jen O'Malley Dillon, said the location of the address was meant to ?crystallize the choice in this election? for voters.

On Friday, The Washington Post announced it would not endorse a presidential candidate in this year's election and would continue to forgo presidential endorsements in the future. Will Lewis, the paper's publisher, announced the decision in a column that described the non-endorsement as a return to the paper's pre-1970s tradition.

A week out from Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are neck and neck in the critical battleground state. Harris held a moderate polling lead over Trump in Michigan after she replaced President Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket, but FiveThirtyEight?s polling average now has her leading by just 0.4 points. Harris?s struggles are due in part to declining support among Arab American voters in Michigan, who have been critical of the Biden administration?s handling of the war in Gaza.

In the past two weeks, former President Donald Trump has made repeated references to ?the enemy within? the United States, suggesting he would use the military to put down unrest caused by the left, sparking controversy as the presidential race nears its conclusion. Those remarks, in turn, have prompted former high-level members of his administration to speak out against his candidacy and question his fitness for office.

On Thursday, the Israeli military announced it had killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in an operation in southern Gaza the day prior. Sinwar was one of the primary architects of Hamas?s Oct. 7 attack on Israel and was believed to have been hiding in Gaza?s tunnel system since the attack. Despite Sinwar?s death, both sides have resisted engaging in renewed ceasefire talks.

On November 5, in addition to presidential, House, state and local elections, voters will be casting ballots in 34 Senate elections in 33 different states. Currently, a coalition of 47 Democrats and four independent senators holds a 51-49 advantage over Republicans in Congress?s upper chamber. This year, Republicans are only defending 11 of the 33 Senate seats up for election and are likely to hold all 11. Two of the 23 Democratic seats up for election ? in West Virginia and Montana ? are rated solid Republican and lean Republican, respectively, by Cook Political Report.

Last Wednesday, Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 storm, knocking out power to 3.2 million people and killing at least eight. Two weeks earlier, Hurricane Helene ravaged the Southeast, killing more than 250 people and resulting in widespread devastation. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which coordinates the federal response to disasters that exceed the capabilities of local and state authorities, has become the target of criticism for its response to these storms ? particularly from conservative commentators ? pertaining to how it allocates resources, its responsiveness, and its funding.

Today, we?re focusing on 10 ballot initiatives that we think exemplify this moment in U.S. politics. In Tangle fashion, we?ll give a neutral overview of the measure and what advocates and opponents are saying about it. However, we won?t be giving our take ? the intent of this piece is to highlight a selection of ballot initiatives that tell a story about the salient issues of this election. We?ll let you decide what arguments sound the strongest to you.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Garland v. VanDerStok, a case challenging a 2022 Biden administration rule that regulated unserialized firearms, also known as ?ghost guns.? A group of firearms owners, gun rights groups and manufacturers challenged the rule, arguing that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) exceeded its authority in issuing the regulation. During arguments, a majority of justices on the court seemed skeptical of the plaintiffs? case, indicating that they would uphold the rule when they issue their decision in summer 2025.

On Saturday, the tech executive joined former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the site of the attempted assassination of Trump in July. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and the owner of X (formerly Twitter), addressed the rally?s attendees and reaffirmed his support for Trump?s candidacy while criticizing Democrats on a range of issues. Broadly, the speech exemplified Musk?s evolution from a political moderate to an outspoken advocate for the former president.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan unsealed special counsel Jack Smith?s latest filing in United States v. Donald Trump, concerning alleged criminal actions committed by the former president following his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. In the filing, Smith argues that Trump "resorted to crimes" to remain in power and was acting outside the scope of his official duties as president when he pressured state officials and then-Vice President Mike Pence to overturn his 2020 election loss.

The dockworkers? strike. On Tuesday, thousands of longshoremen and port operators along the East Coast and Gulf Coast went on strike after their union, the International Longshoremen?s Association (ILA), failed to reach an agreement with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) on a new contract. The ILA, which represents over 45,000 workers, is asking for higher wages for its members and protections against port automation projects. The strike is the first large-scale work stoppage for dockworkers in nearly 50 years and has halted nearly all activity at some of the busiest ports in the United States.

The short and sweet: We are now (finally) offering ad-free podcasts if you subscribe to our premium podcast channel. You can sign up at tanglemedia.supercast.com to start enjoying an ad-free listening experience.
The longer story: For the last few years, our daily podcast has been ad-supported. In that time, we?ve gotten complaints from our listeners saying they find these ads annoying and would happily pay a subscription to get ad-free podcasts.
Today, we are finally making that happen.
Before today's daily podcast comes out, Isaac wanted to tell you about a few of the reasons we are doing this, why we need your help, and how your subscription will make this podcast and future productions possible.
To celebrate this launch, for this week only, you can subscribe to our premium ad-free podcast channel for up to 20% off. Once you subscribe, you?ll get instructions on how to add the premium version of the podcast to your feed, and then every time we publish a podcast you'll have an ad-free version in your feed (plus, you'll get premium, paywalled podcast content).
A few other notes:
In the near future, we are going to start paywalling our Sunday podcast (where I chop it up with Ari Weitzman, our managing editor, about all the news we missed) and interviews, to make sure we are offering ample premium content to podcast subscribers. We are going to produce additional listener mailbag editions as part of the subscribers-only offering. We are going to start recording podcast versions of the Friday newsletters as well, which is another thing people have been asking for. Most of all: Thank you. For years, our podcast was able to exist because so many of people subscribed to our newsletter to support our work. Now, our podcast audience has turned into its own separate entity. You've asked for this and we are thrilled to bring you this offering. Now, lets all take it to the next level.

Tim Walz (D) faced off in the only scheduled vice presidential debate of the 2024 election. The debate provided a stark contrast to the recent presidential debates, with the two candidates delivering fleshed out policy positions, repeatedly finding common ground, offering respectful disagreements, rarely interrupting each other, and avoiding personal attacks.

The hurricane was the third to hit the Big Bend region in Florida in 13 months and broke storm surge records across the Gulf Coast. At least 130 deaths in six states have been attributed to the storm, and the death toll continues to climb. On Monday afternoon, two million homes and businesses were still without power, and floods continued to devastate counties from Florida to Virginia.

On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that federal prosecutors had indicted New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) as part of a corruption investigation. The next day, prosecutors unveiled a five-count indictment against Adams, 64, charging him with bribery, conspiracy, fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. Adams, who denies the charges and pled not guilty on Friday, is the first mayor of New York City to be charged with a federal crime while still in office.

On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris said she supports eliminating the Senate?s filibuster rule to pursue legislation codifying abortion access nationwide. The comments, made in an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio after a campaign stop in the state, mark the first time Harris has called for an end to the filibuster since she became the 2024 Democratic nominee, though she has supported similar proposals in the past.

On Thursday, CNN published an exclusive report on Mark Robinson, North Carolina's Lieutenant Governor and Republican gubernatorial candidate in 2024. On Sunday, congressional leaders introduced a bipartisan spending bill to fund federal agencies until December 20, avoiding a government shutdown when the new fiscal year begins on October 1. The agreement, announced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), will fund federal agencies at their current levels ? with a provision for $231 million in additional funding for the U.S. Secret Service ? pushing negotiations over the full-year spending bill until after the election.
