The Collin Kartchner Podcast - This is Your (Kid's) Brain on Video Games

Is your son/daughter playing video games a bit too much? Have you noticed changes in their attitude and behavior? Are you worried about what video games are doing to their developing brains and the impact that will have on their mental health and overall success in life?  According to Newzoo, gamers worldwide are expected to spend nearly $160 billion in 2020 on video games. Let that number sink in.

Kids are becoming so addicted to video games today they are hurting family members or themselves when the games are taken away. I get texts from ER docs saying kids as young as 10 attempted suicide simply because mom took away Fortnite. We lost a 6th grader in the neighboring city to suicide last year because mom took the X-box away. These are NOT just forms of entertainment, and kids are NOT wired to regulate and slow down their gaming time. And the gaming industry is taking full advantage of this making billions. Parents need to be their kids' brakes, but maybe it's time to get really consider getting your kids away from these games for good.

Today's episode I interview a pediatric neurologist Dr. John Condie to give us some serious wake-the-bleep-up information on what these videos games are doing to kids, why they're doing what they do to kids, and why it's way past time to break your kids free from the merciless clutches of that dang X-Box/PS4/DS.

This is one of the most eye-opening interviews I have conducted on the podcast yet, something every parent and teenager should listen to.

Now excuse me while I go scream into a pillow. #savethekids #ditchthevideogames

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - with Ronna Glickman

(TV commercial voice): Do you suffer from NMK Disease? Do you say things like "Oh... Not MY Kid" or "Not My School" or "Not MY neighborhood" or "I trust my kid" or "My kid would never do that"? Well for those suffering with NMK, there's hope, and today I talk with long-time educator and New York resident Ronna Glickman for insight on how to be cured of NMK. Side affects include delusional parenting, lack of boundary setting, over-trusting your tween/teen, bloviating on Facebook that your kids are perfect and would never mess up to the cringe eye-rolling of all your friends, and halitosis. If you or someone you love suffers from NMK Disorder, run them to a Collin Kartchner speech asap. You may save a life.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - On the Road in Idaho

FINALLY back speaking in person and I brought my mobile recording studio (mic + Zoom H4N) driving from Boise to McCall, Idaho, and wanted to talk about being emotionally present with your kids. Your emotional presence as a parent is the nutrient for your kids' development, and too many kids today are malnourished. I open up about a few things I/we do with our own kids each day so they know we as their parents love them, are here for them, they matter, they are important, and they are safe.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Guess What? Your Daughter Looks at Porn, Too

?Only boys struggle with porn.?

?Girls only care about social media not porn.?

?This is just a guy issue.?

*Dwight Schrute voice*

FALSE.

Countless times I have read messages from tween/teen girls saying ?Collin, I?ve been struggling with pornography for ______ time and it?s eating me up inside, I feel horrible because porn is a guy issue, and I?m a girl, so what?s wrong with me?? Gah. Nothing is wrong with you. By some expert estimates 90+ of boys will have some struggle with pornography as a teenager and 70%+ of girls will too. Guess what parents, girls are escaping to porn for the same reasons boys are. Today my guest is a very brave teenager name Ashlee who shares her story of how she was exposed to porn simply by a book her mom had on the shelf that was a how-to-talk-to-your-kids-about-porn. After mom gave her an iPhone, it was all downhill from there. Not until just a few months ago, Ashlee lived a 2nd life hiding this dark secret from everyone in her life, but now, after finally telling a trusted friend about her struggle, she?s on the road to freedom. Since recording this episode I have had Ashlee join me speaking to 1000?s of people (virtually) with so may teenage girls sharing afterwards how her story changed their lives?inspiring so many of them to open up about their own porn struggle and being the healing process. This interview is pretty awesome, a must listen for parents of girls no matter the age, and for any girl struggling with pornography to hear you're not alone, and there's a way out.

You can watch Ashlee tell her story to 1000's at utahcoalition.org or send her a message @ashleeayre on Instagram

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - What About My Older Teens? with Andrea Davis

Question I get a lot is "What do I do about my older teens who I gave a smart phone to years ago, they've been on Snapchat/IG since 11, I know it hurt their mental health so much, but I'm afraid to just take it all away. How do I go about putting the lion back into the cage?" Many times this issue has affected not just your teen negatively, but your entire family and your relationship with your son/daughter. Sure it's always easier to have just NOT given them this tech, so what do you do to unring the bell? My guest today is Andrea Davis, former educator and founder of Better Screen Time. The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Guest: Therapist Joe Dennis, CMCH

Joe Dennis, LCMHC, is back in studio today with his new J's for one of my favorite conversations thus far on The Collin Kartchner Podcast. We discuss 9/11, how hate is not a mental illness, the despicable things TikTok does to create trauma bonding among young users, how teen mental health issues are caused in part by decision fatigue, self-determination theory, and the struggles with this new generation of young adults finding authentic identity. This episode isn't like any thus far, and Joe drops so much wisdom on issues not discussed yet on this podcast-- hope you enjoy, and share it with your struggling college-age kids too.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Protecting Childhood with Chris McKenna (PYE)

My guest today is the founder of Protect Young Eyes and father of 4, Chris McKenna. We talk about what's happening to an entire generation of children/teens/young people right under our noses, and what parents need to do to save their kids' childhoods. Chris was in a recent documentary called "Childhood 2.0" which you can, and must, watch. (It's FREE btw) A 100% accurate depiction of what tech/gaming/social media/smart phone companies have been doing to this generation of kids and how it's changing the definition of childhood for millions-- and what this will lead to if we don't change things NOW.

Chris is a long-time advocate and fighter for kids and families-- we worked together in bringing legislation (google The Earn It Act) to the federal government to FIX APP RATINGS which would create a 3rd party independent rating board for social media apps and mobile games. If TikTok and Snapchat are willfully letting obscene, adult content on their apps, why are they then rated 12+??

Until the world wakes up, Chris and I and others will keep shouting til the vocal chords finally give up. Don't forget to download upcoming PYE App for parents.

For parents of kids' doing online schooling with Chromebooks please thoroughly read Chris's article on locking down that tech safely HERE.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Interview it Sex Trafficking Victim, Elizabeth

This episode I have the honor of interviewing Elizabeth Frazier founder of Hero Bands. Elizabeth was sex trafficked by family members in Utah from age 4-23, all under the guise of a happy Utah family with good parents. A nightmare in ever sense of the word, Elizabeth broke free and now a mom of 5 kids, she shares her story to educate others and raise awareness to this epidemic too many think only occurs in dark places far across the world. This all was happening in an affluent Utah community. Elizabeth started Hero Bands to provide encouragement and hope, as well as help end child sex trafficking.

Reminder that social media apps are the #1 tool predators use to groom, lure, and then eventually sex traffic kids. The most dangerous place for a child is not a dark alley at 3am, but on a smart phone in their bedroom at night without vigilant parents.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - GenZ talk with "Biz" (21)

Elizabeth "Biz" is one of my favorite zoomers on the planet. She's hilariously honest, loving and real -- she works at Starbucks, loves her tattoos and Baby Yoda doll, and is a self-described TikTok addict. She grew up in the affluent Daybreak community, a place where every family seems perfect. But Biz's childhood was far from perfect, which led to some major heartaches no child should have to go through. (This is a story of how NOT to handle a divorce for sake of your kids.) After her parents divorce, she was molested by step siblings, and then exposed to porn all before age 9, and by 8th grade she was pregnant. Faced with the fact that she was now forced to be an adult at 13, life threw decisions at her most people would not have to make til much older. Now 21, going through the same struggles so many GenZ'er go through as smartphone/social media guinea pigs, Biz is in a healthy and happy relationship and hoping her story can help parents see how important it is to be actively engaged in their kids' lives. And an amazing teen pregnancy story for anyone out there facing a decision whether to keep their baby or place for adoption.

Listener Warning: this episode is for adults/parents only. Topics discussed include child molestation, pornography and teen pregnancy.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Teen Talk with Smith (16) Overcoming Porn

Smith is what I think ever parent hopes their 16yr-old boy can be at this age. He is the happiest, smiliest, nicest person full of light and energy and joy--it's infectious. You cannot be around him and not feel better about life. He loves his parents, his sisters are his best friends, he fixes up cars with his dad and plays lacrosse. But it wasn't always this way for Smith. At 9 years old on an iPad his parents thought was locked down, Smith found pornography, and quickly became hooked. It took over his childhood, it hurt his self-esteem, it changed his attitude towards his family and life. Porn became his dark secret and took over his tween and early teen years, until at 14 the best thing happened to him: "I got caught." It was then that the healing could begin, and now just 2 years later, Smith is who he was born to be. Listen as we talk about his story, how he was able to kick this struggle so many teenagers struggle with today, and how Smith now goes to homes and shares his story as a presentation to families--afterwards he even walks parents through how to set up the best parental controls to keep your kids safe on their devices. I thought his presentation was so great, I had him come by the studio last week to film it, which we will be making available to parents everywhere soon. If you live in Utah/Davis/SL counties, you can have Smith come to your home and share his presentation with your family, then sit side by side and teach you how to lock down their devices to protect them from all the bad stuff the internet is anxious to get into your kids' faces. Too many kids today are fighting the billion dollar porn industry all on their own, and it's time to empower kids to fight this battle. But it all starts with good parenting.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Screentime & Toddlers, with Occupational Therapist

My guest today is Michelle Pine, an occupational therapist who works with kids age 1-5. She and her entire community of OT's have seen alarming trends in kids struggling, and screen-time is one of the leading culprits. Verbal delays, cognitive delays, emotional delays, all of these have been rising at rates that should sound alarms. We discuss what is happening from little kids being in constant states of overstimulation (yes, even ABC Mouse and "learning" games) and what is happening when kids are being raised by iPads. Did you know there's a new-ish term in their field called "Virtual Autism"?

There's a reason why Steve Jobs, inventor of the iPad, would not let his own children use iPads. Same reason why so many Silicon Valley tech executives send their children to no-tech, screen-free schools. The people who make these devices know the damage they're causing. Hooray for personal ethics :(

If you're a parent with young kids this is a must listen. If you're planning on having kids one day, listen up. If you're a teenager who will have kids in the future, learn now and save your kids from this mess.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Teen Talk with Jack (18) from Denver, CO

Few weeks ago, I got a message from this awesome, recently graduated 18yr-old high schooler named Jack. He told me his story, which is something happening to pretty much every high schooler/teenager today regarding social media/gaming/etc., and how he had an INCREDIBLE awakening. He now travels the country speaking to youth groups and schools about how as a young teen he got hooked to technology and screens, how he broke the trance, and how need to fix the internet for the sake of the kids. In 2020 Jack was named a US Presidential Scholar, the highest academic honor bestowed by the US Secretary of Education. He recently started an organization called "Detach Now" and just authored his first book entitled "Acquired Connection". Did I mention...he's EIGHTEEN.

One of the most smart, well-spoken teenagers I have come across, Jack and I talk about some fun & seriously eye-opening stuff. This dude is like a young Jaron Lanier/Tristan Harris/Socrates.

You can follow his work and/or donate to his cause (or donate a car) at www.DetachNow.com and while you are at it, go get a copy of his book HERE.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - How to Screen Detox your Kids, with ScreenStrong Founder

After sharing this week stories of families doing a screen-detox with their kids and the amazing results they saw, I got bombarded with messages asking for help on HOW to do a detox. I reached out to my friend Melanie Hempe, founder of Screen Strong in North Carolina, to discuss why and how to do a screen-detox for your kids. Melanie spent 8 years researching the science of screen-time, especially video games, after watching her oldest son become severely addicted video games. It's a story happening in many homes, to parents who never thought they'd let it happen to their own kids. It's never too late, and it's not as hard as it sounds. My own family went screen-free 2.5 years ago and, like every parent I meet that did the same thing, it was the best decision ever. Listen to Melanie's story of her son Adam, what she's learned helping 100's of families break the screen addiction, and how to start with a 7-day detox for your kids which will hopefully roll into a 30-day detox and happier, more connected families. Get ready to be a family again, and to see your kids' creativity soar and the light come back into their eyes.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Why the Thorne Family Went Screen-Free

Mary & Ryan Thorne are dear friends who live in Gilbert, AZ, with 3 boys Dallas, Dylan, and Jax. She confided in us back then that her boys were all struggling with behavioral & focus issues, and didn't make the connection that maybe the screen-time/video games were the culprit. Sitting in the car with her husband, both in tears, as they just left a meeting with their pediatrician saying "If lose your son to video games, you will NEVER get him back" they knew they needed to do something different. They found an a amazing pediatrician who told them if they lost their boys to screens or video games, they would never get them back. The Thorne's then decided to throw out the iPads & video games, and you HAVE to listen to this story to see what happened next. Even their doctors and kids' school teachers said it was all miraculous.

The books mentioned are "Glow Kids" by Dr. Nicolas Kardaras and "Boys Adrift" by Leonard Sax. Both must-reads for every parent today.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - QPR Training for Teen Suicide Prevention

I had 3 amazing women from the nearby city of Spanish Fork, UT, come on my podcast to share about the QPR training (Question, Persuade, Refer) developed to help decrease the rates of teen suicide in their city. One of my guests is a 911-dispatcher, one is Susan who helped spearhead this whole initiative, and one a mother who tragically lost her son to suicide at 14 who now shares her story with parents. The goal is not to just talk about the issues of rising teen suicide, but show how these types of trainings can be created in each city by just a few caring people, backed by local leaders and families, to create a stronger village. The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Undercover Report: Instagram's Child P*rn Problem

So last week I went undercover, set up a fake profile, said I was a 12yr-old girl, and uncovered a huge issue on Instagram: pedophile and child p*rn accounts all over the place. Easy to find, easy to gain access to, most of these accounts have 1000,'s of people following them, sharing images and videos of kids. Accounts with names like "Love_CP" or "Little_Candy" or "Pizza...something". Pedophiles sharing links to child p*rn on their Instagram accounts, trading pics like baseball cards. Report them, and Instagram says "This account doesn't go against our community standards." What? Social media platforms like Instagram need to do a better job making their platform a safe place where children aren't being sexually exploited and abused. Facebook/IG boasts they hire the brightest minds in the world, they can addict 2B people to their platforms, give advertisers the most minutia of data on every single human, but they can't fix this issue? This episode I tell the whole story, and share insight on how child p*rnographers are using Instagram to perpetuate the creation and demand of child p*rnography, including what I think needs to change for our society to start caring more about kids. Until then, Instagram/Facebook/TikTok/Snapchat... get these out of your kids hands for good. #savethekids

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - "Good Pictures, Bad Pictures" Author Kristen Jenson

Did you know the average age kids are exposed to pornography is around age 7-8? That means as parents you need to start talking about it, in the right terms, around age 3-4. No fear... there's help. Kristen Jenson is the author of 2 best-selling books called "Good Pictures, Bad Pictures" one for young kids and one for pre-teens. We bought this book years ago and read/keep reading it with our kids. As much as we'd love to make sure our kids aren't exposed to this evil, its inevitable, and NOT talking about just leads kids curiosity to search it out themselves or worse, have a friend/neighbor/cousin expose them. Now that 47% of the entire internet is porn, and we have to worry about less-vigilant (clueless?) neighbors/friends' parents, kids need to be equipped with tools to successfully manage this when not under our roof. Kristen runs www.ProtectYoungMinds.org and you can/need to buy her books on Amazon or anywhere books are sold.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Detective Zierse, Internet Crimes Against Children

Detective Kelly Zierse is a detective for the Internet Crimes Against Children department, a job I don't think most people could handle. Prior to this he was the school resource officer at a large high school for 7 years, and saw all the effects that smart phones had on teenagers. Bullying, sex crimes, weapon offenses, drug deals on Snapchat, threats of violence, the list goes on. An important episode to help parents understand what's really going on in schools thanks to social media and smart phones, and why we need to rethink allowing smart phones on campus.

Today's episode I share 10 reasons why kids/teens are more anxious today and guess what? None of them are the kids' fault. The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Why I Wear a Mask (for the Kids of course.)

It's 5:34am and I could not sleep. Just had to get this off my chest.
If I, as part of the human race, don't do anything and everything I personally can do to slow the spread of a virus, so kids will be able to be back in school and doing online school at home, alone, on a laptop with access to the internet, where pedophiles and sexual predators are hunting them, then shame on me. I wear a mask for those kids.

PS Hayes is my 10yr old nephew, that part cut off :)

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Bye Bye Bullying with Nate Webb

One of the biggest mental health disasters created when we gave our kids access to social media was the onslaught of cyber-bullying. And when parents ask me, "Why are kids so mean to each other today?" I quickly point out "Kids? Have you been on adult Facebook lately?" We can't expect our kids to be kind, understanding, empathetic humans when that isn't be modeled for them by adults online and off. But dealing with bullies is both an art and science and my guest today started a mission to eradicate bullying by empowering the bullied so the bullies lose their power. Nate Webb is a high school counselor who like many of us was bullied growing up pre-Snapchat days, now working on a high school campus, who decided to better understand why bullying exists and made it his mission to help kids rise above.

As we see what happens to an entire generation learning to communicate with other humans from behind the safety of a screen and a fake Instagram account, robbing kids of learning empathy, just another reason to delay giving your kids access to social media as long as possible.

The Collin Kartchner Podcast - Father Daughter Talk with Chad & McKinley (16)

Today's episode I'm talking with a dad named Chad and his 16yr-old daughter McKinley down in Orange County California. Chad runs a very successful/busy financial firm Pacific Capital while also being the city treasurer, and still somehow manages to be an engaging and present father to his 5 kids. McKinley, a bright and successful soon-to-be-Junior who at 16 is thriving in academics, sports, and with friends, all while being smart-phone & social media free. I asked them both to come chat about how they've created this awesome relationship when so many other dads/daughters at this stage struggle. In a culture where the non-stop work grind to exhaustion is a symbol of affluence, the accumulation of more wealth, status, and stuff at the expense of our family relationships is suffocating our society, too many kids' emotional needs are being shoved aside for all the wrong reasons. This episode offers advice for parents who feel they've fallen into these traps and how to reprioritize and reconnect with the people who really matter.
