Leo Nocentelli

In this episode of Plus One, Kraz welcomes one of the most proficient guitarists of all time, Leo Nocentelli of The Meters, onto the show. Leo and Kraz discuss everything from Leo?s thoughts on super-star artists sampling Meters songs, to his unconventional methods of gaining the confidence to play in front of crowds at an early age. The two also talk about Leo?s signature sound that he gets out of the Gibson ES-175, and he sheds light on the incredible rhythmic connection between drummer Zigaboo Modeliste and bassist George Porter Jr. You?ll also hear Leo talk about why The Meters split up in the late 70?s, the messiness of the business side of music, and why Leo enjoys being an essential contributor to the band from the background, and never the spotlight. This is a must-hear conversation between two masters of the guitar, and one of the most monumental musicians that funk has ever heard.

Leo Nocentelli is a founding member and the lead guitarist for The Meters, a band that is often credited alongside all-time greats like James Brown as being one of the sole originators of funk music. He?s written classic songs including ?Hey Pocky A-Way,? and "Cissy Strut," which he and Kraz discuss in-depth in the conversation. On top of his work with The Meters, he boasts an incredible musical resume as a session player, having recorded with legends such as Etta James, Temptations, Dr. John, and Robert Palmer. He?s a recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of The Meters, but his playing and the band?s incredible discography speak for themselves, needing no official recognition. In this episode he details how he developed his one of a kind style that fuses funk, rock n? roll, and jazz like no guitarist has ever done before.

Ariel Posen

?... I put my head down, and I kinda feel like I?ve never looked back up. I just played, I woke up. Played, listened, learned. It was just music, guitar ?till I went to bed. I?d be eating dinner with the guitar on.? -- Ariel Posen

This week on Plus One, Kraz is joined by guitarist and singer Ariel Posen, who just released his second solo album, Headway, in March. In this episode Ariel details his musical development from the time he started playing piano in elementary school, up until the spontaneous moment when he realized that he was a full-time touring musician. You?ll also hear Ariel talk about recording his latest album at the same studio that his parents used to record at, and at the end of the episode he and Kraz nerd out about guitar, as they dive deep on Ariel?s guitars, open tunings, and slide playing.

Ariel Posen is a Canadian guitarist and singer from Winnipeg who gained initial recognition from fans and critics after releasing his debut solo album, How Long, in 2019. Ariel grew up surrounded and infatuated by music, as his parents toured and recorded in a folk band called Finjan. His soulful songs, unique slide style, and experimentation with alternate guitar tunings make him as distinguished as any young guitarist out there, and in this conversation you?ll hear him and Kraz talk about what makes his playing stand out.

Joe Russo

This week on Eric Krasno Plus One, Eric talks with drum-phenom Joe Russo. Russo has been involved in many extraordinary musical ventures throughout his career- Furthur, Benevento/Russo Duo, and Shpongle to name a few- but he has gained monumental praise from jam band fans over the last 8 years for his sensational drumming in Joe Russo?s Almost Dead. JRAD takes the music of The Grateful Dead to new heights through deeply experimental improvisation and sky-brushing peaks, and Russo has been at the helm of the group since its inception.

Over the last few years Russo has put out several new collections of music including his 2019 debut solo album Phér?b?ney, as well as a collaboration EP with Circles Around The Sun, several singles, and has performed with Shpongle for their farewell concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The rhythm guru has been busy, but quarantine has allowed him to spend time with his family, which he says he?s very-much enjoyed.

On this week?s episode Kraz talks with Robert Randolph, frontman of Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Randolph is one of the most galvanizing performers in modern music. His band brings an invigorating swagger to the blues, and the way that Randolph combines gospel, funk, and high-energy rock n? roll makes for an exhilarating listening experience. They have been critically recognized with four Grammy nominations, and Randolph was ranked as one of the top 100 Greatest Guitarists by Rolling Stone at just 33 years old- as a pedal steel player!

Duane Betts and Devon Allman

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with Duane Betts and Devon Allman, founding members of The Allman Betts Band. Devon and Duane each have had distinguished solo careers, but it was inevitable that one day the two would team up to revitalize their long-running familial musical connection. The Allman Betts Band formed in 2018 and kicked off their new musical endeavor with a well-received 2019 tour of the U.S., including several European dates.

Having grown up on the road enraptured with rock n? roll music, it?s fitting that the two partners have made a livelihood out of their infatuation with the art form. While you may hear the band?s name and think of their rock-legend fathers Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts, make no mistake- these two young-guns have given new life to the soaring southern rock melodies that their fathers helped to pioneer.

In this episode Duane, Devon, and Kraz talk about growing up in the heat of the rock n? roll daydream, songwriting chemistry between the two, Devon's incredible tale of meeting his father Gregg, and much more. Check out Kraz delivering another riveting interview with these two rockin? reinventors.

Widespread Panic has been an elite-level act in the jam scene for over three decades, and they are known for their ?lively fusion of southern rock, funk, and good time rock n? roll?. The band has gone through numerous lineup changes over the course of their lengthy career, and Schools has bumped the band along with his multifaceted six-string bass style since the very beginning.

Schools has a unique ability to stealthily shift between hard rock-based and funk-oriented grooves. His acute, intuitive interpretation of his influences, which he and Kraz discuss extensively in this conversation, has been a driving force in the wild musical trail that Widespread Panic has blazed throughout the country over the course of their career, ?including each of their record-breaking 60 sold-outshowsat Red Rocks

Amphitheatre?.

George Porter, Jr.

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with George Porter Jr., funk-master and founding member of The Meters. Porter is a New Orleans legend, but his slick playing and deep-pocket grooves have made him a 4-string-fable across the globe. While Porter has touched on many musical styles throughout his career, there is an undeniable hint of Crescent City soul in just about every word he speaks during this colorful conversation.

In this episode, Porter and Kraz talk about the origin story of The Meters, Porter?s discovery of the bass guitar, playing with Bill Kreutzmann and The Dead, and many other fascinating tales of his extraordinary musical life.

Porter?s passion for music is undeniable, and it?s on full display when Porter talks about the ?double-edged blade? of The Meters? music being sampled in rap and pop songs- his playful and light-hearted attitude towards missing out on critical and financial recognition from others using his music is an earnest confirmation of his love for his artform- he?s just happy that these grooves still fill the air.

Ani DiFranco

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and folk singer Ani DiFranco, who?s gained critical recognition in the neo-Americana folk world for unaffectedly blending her eclectic sound with socially and politically charged lyrics. She is also widely accredited for mothering the DIY movement in music. DiFranco started her own record label, Righteous Babe, when she was 19 and has since released 22 studio albums. In 2019 she put out a memoir, titled No Walls and the Recurring Dream, in which she details her life as a musician and activist.

Last month Ani released a double single, ?Do or Die? and ?Contagious,? along with a music video for the former. The video promotes voting by dropping the viewer into an illustrious, quintessential display of the streets of New Orleans, to culminate with a social justice street-dance-party, ending in a silent tribute to justice by the Magnolia Bridge. The slick, Wurlitzer-decorated groove in combination with her versatile vocal dynamics provide a nifty instrumental section to compliment her message of unity and justice.

Ani and Kraz talk through her recent projects, the journey to the digital age of music, and about her musical style choices and breakthroughs. Ani goes in depth on the influences that brought her to her current standing, and how she did it herself to become a matriarch for the DIY movement in music.

Jeff Bhasker

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks to record producer Jeff Bhasker, who has won Grammys for his work with Kanye West, Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson, fun., and more. Eric and Jeff have been friends since college, when he was a jazz-obsessed keyboardist studying all forms of music but without a concept for what he?d make on his own.

Jeff describes how discovering Basquiat and other contemporary visual artists helped shape his own concept as an artist, and why ?what?s the concept?? remains an essential question he asks musicians he works with.

Jeff also shares about working with Bruno Mars when Bruno was an 18 year old kid new to LA, and explains how he went from playing keyboard with Kanye West to producing his Grammy-winning records.

Andy Frasco

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks to keyboardist and frontman Andy Frasco of Andy Frasco & The U.N. After interning with record labels as a teenager and managing bands on his own, Frasco was inspired to teach himself piano and make it as a performer. More than 10 years and 5 albums later, Andy Frasco?s engaging stage presence and the band?s soulful, bluesy rock have made Andy Frasco & The U.N. a fan favorite on the live music and festival circuit.

Andy tells Eric about constantly starting businesses as a kid and how that hustle helps him while making it as an outsider in the music industry. Andy also explains how he?s channelling his restless creative energy while stuck at home, his recent socially distanced concert at Red Rocks, and his process for making dreams come true.

Randy Jackson

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks to bassist, producer, and TV personality Randy Jackson about his musical upbringing in Louisiana and the many reinventions throughout his career. Steeped in the New Orleans jazz scene and growing up performing with local legends, Randy became a decorated session musician who played with superstars like Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, and dozens more.

A chance meeting with visionary producer Tom Dowd changed Randy?s whole perspective on popular music and led him into A&R, producing, and eventually to American Idol. A man who knows how to listen to and make hits, Randy currently manages nine writer/producers and a handful of recording artists, all while running his holistic health company Unify Health Labs, and recording an album with Journey.

Randy and Eric discuss all of that plus their favorite guitarists, the power of New Orleans music, and joining forces on a future project.

Victoria Canal

In this episode of Plus One Eric talks to his good friend and one of his favorite young artists, singer-songwriter Victoria Canal. Having grown up across three continents and moving every year, from an early age Victoria used songwriting to channel her fears of not fitting in. It?s Canal?s complete comfort in her own skin that lets her trust audiences and be truly vulnerable with them, frequently bringing fans to tears.

Her newest EP, Victoria, released on August 28th, represents a giant step forward for Canal as a writer and producer, and the resulting tracks convey a maturity far beyond her 22 years. Hear Victoria tell Eric why a seaside cliff near Barcelona was the only place to record such a profoundly personal album, and why it feels right to release it during such a difficult year.

Cochemea Gastelum

In Episode of 18 Plus One Eric speaks with saxophonist and composer Cochemea Gastelum, whose 2019 album "All My Relations" is one of Kraz's most played records of the year. Cochemea made his mark as a member of The Dap-Kings, the potent funk and soul band behind the late great vocalist Sharon Jones. He's also played with artists from Amy Winehouse to Run The Jewels, always experimenting with effects and other sounds you might not expect from a sax player.

Cochemea brings that same experimental ethos to his solo material, drawing inspiration from his native roots and incorporating Navajo melodies, a Sanskrit prayer, and Mexican huapango rhythms with jazz and funk arrangements to produce a record that is truly one of a kind.

Allen Stone

In Episode 17 of Plus One Eric talks with soul singer and bandleader Allen Stone. The son of a preacher, Allen describes how singing in church from the age of 3 built his musical chops for years before he was exposed to "secular" music. Once he heard Stevie Wonder's InnerVisions as a teenager Allen had found the sound he wanted to emulate, and you can hear echoes of Stevie and other R&B legends in each of Stone's four records.

Eric and Allen also discuss fatherhood, the lifelong search for contentment with the touring life, and what they tell up and coming artists when they're asked for advice.
