Healing and Leadership (Part 5) w/ Brett Powell

In this episode, Jake and Bob host Brett Powell on the podcast. Brett is co-host with Jake on Way of the Heart Podcast, a conversion for men about journeying through life with a heart fully alive. Brett has extensive experience in leadership within the church and a passion for men?s ministry and fatherhood. Brett gets real about the heart of leadership: relationship with others and relationship with God, and why our relationships at home matter more than anything else as leaders. Thank you, Brett, for the gentle reminder to re-evaluate what we?re prioritizing in light of what?s most important!

Quote:

We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, we are the sum of the Father's love for us and our real capacity to become the image of His Son Jesus. - St. John Paul II

Key points:

Work is an easy place to go for affirmation, but parenthood is where our true selves show How leadership manifests in fatherhood How performance orientation can get in the way of unconditional love What does ?freedom to fail? mean and look like? The importance of desiring good for the people you lead The heart multiplies itself into the people it leads The yoke of Christ vs the yoke we put on others The impact of shame and an unhealed heart in leadership Why prioritizing relationships in the home matters more than anything else The currency of trust is foundational in organizations

Practical Application:

Assess: where are you currently putting your resources either in your business or your family life? What does this communicate about your priorities? Read Fr. Jacques Philippe?s article on Fatherhood (below in the shownotes). Choose to do one thing this week to build trust in a family relationship, work relationship and/or a friendship.  Take time to reflect on where you might be living out of a performance orientation. How might this be affecting your relationships and what?s one thing you can do this week to work on that?

Healing and Leadership (Part 4) w/ Peter Herbeck

Today, we welcome Peter Herbeck from Renewal Ministries onto the show. Peter would describe his younger self as a troublemaker and rule breaker, acting out because of an alcoholic father. But, when his father miraculously and voluntarily turned himself in for treatment after his sister called on the family to pray, Peter was introduced to healing: clinically and through Christ. It was a step in the right direction, but his healing journey was far from over. Join our conversation as Peter shares how his understanding of ?healing the whole person? shifted in his fifties and how this has impacted his leadership forever.

Key points:

Peter?s early life was heavily influenced by his father, a war vet who was successful but an alcoholic Healing began in Peter?s father?s life with Jesus and then led to healing in the family Peter was introduced to counseling during treatment for his father Well into his fifties, Peter didn?t address his healing head on, but simply tried to ?trust God? more Dr. Bob?s book, ?Healing the Whole Person? was transformational for Peter and catalyzed his adult journey of healing Wounds from Peter?s early life around public failure led to beliefs and vows Even though there was grace and no deep sin in Peter?s life, he was experiencing brokenness as an adult because of unresolved trauma Healing allows you to walk in the joy of the Lord  Acknowledging our brokenness and leaning into Jesus is necessary for leaders

Practical Application:

If you are in ministry, ask yourself if you feel pressure to be ?perfect? all the time. Find a trusted friend or ministry colleague who you can share honestly with about your shortcomings.  Take the time to ask yourself, ?What do I really want or desire?? What is in your heart once you cut past any sin or fear of failure? Journal what comes up.  If you have unresolved trauma in your life, seek support.

Together with Jake and Bob, Archbishop Sample shares some key childhood wounds and healing in parts of his story, demonstrating how healing helps unite us to Christ and those we lead.

How the Archbishop began his healing journey about two years ago The Archbishop shares vulnerably about father wounds and bullying he experienced as a young boy Jake affirms strength in vulnerability and the safety it creates How brokenness has affected Archbishop Sample and his leadership, particularly in his relationship as a spiritual father to his priests How healing has impacted the Archbishop?s spiritual fatherhood and relationship with the priests in his Archdiocese The importance of having people in your life who are instruments of healing How a leader?s healing and transparency can lead to healing in the people he leads

Practical Application:

Ask yourself, ?Am I willing to do what I ask of others?? What are some parts of your story that you aren?t ready to tell yet? Might you need more healing in these areas?  Write an encouraging letter to a priest or bishop in your diocese. We often only reach out to them when we have a bone to pick!

How can leaders bring healing to others? All these questions and more will be addressed in the weeks ahead as we hear from Jake, Bob and loads of special guests. In part one, Jake and Bob share parts of their own stories as they explore why ongoing healing is essential for anyone who takes leadership seriously.

Sexual Healing (Part 7) with Christopher West... continued

Jake and Bob continue their conversation with Christopher West. If you haven?t heard part one, click here to listen because it?s essential for understanding the content of today's episode.

Join Jake, Bob and Christopher as they take a deep ?excavating? look at the transformation and healing of identity through the power of an honest and loving spouse. Sexual healing is more than just the healing of sexual things, it?s a deeper healing of our identity as men and women made in the image of God. Overtime, within the safety of a loving marriage, each man has discovered areas of their hearts that are in need of redemption. Humility before God and our spouses, and a willingness to invite the Lord into our wounds leads to powerful healing and wholeness.

Guiding Quote:

?It is not in our power to not feel or to forget an offense; but the heart that offers itself to the Holy Spirit turns injury into compassion and purifies the memory in transforming hurt into intercession.? (CCC 2843)

Key points:

Sexual healing is more than a healing of sexual things, it?s a healing of our masculinity and femininity How the excavation/ archaeological process is a rich analogy for the cooperative healing that can happen between God and ourselves The importance of where we find our identity The power of an honest spouse in sexual healing If we?re not living out our commitment of marriage in love for our spouse, then we?re also not honouring God God is the ultimate healer, because there are things that are beyond our human capacity to transform The enemy distorts and sets up idols that prevent us from seeing the God?s goodness in world as he intended it Breaking open an analogy of self-condemnation: coming ?face to face with the hunchback in the woods?

Practical Application:

Where do I find my identity: in what others think or in how God sees me? What in my life have I turned into an idol, and how might that get in the way of loving my spouse well? How would my perspective shift if I saw the idols in my life as icons providing a window to God? Where have I made agreements with the opinions of others that has led to self-condemnation? Go to the Lord in prayer and ask him to love you back to wholeness in those places.

Sexual Healing (Part 6) with Christopher West

This week, Jake and Bob spend time with an old friend, Christopher West. They reminisce about their spiritual history with each other, and Christopher gets real about his own journey of healing from rejection wounds. Christopher is well known as ?the Theology of the Body guy,? but after nine years of hiding his own brokenness behind masks in his marriage, he was confronted with the reality that he was living out his brokenness with his wife. Christopher walks us through his testimony of learning to take off the masks to let God love him.

Guiding Quote:

?For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel?not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.? - 1 Cor 1:17

Key points:

Christopher, Jake and Bob talk about their friendship and how they first met How Christopher?s wounds of rejection created a blindspot that prevented him from loving his wife well in their first decade of marriage How wounds of rejection can affect identity We have to go into our family history to understanding our wounds  The ?archaeological dig? into our own wounds must be done with Christ Our wounds play out in the marriage bed We can show up as we are because we?re loved by God

Practical Application:

What is your spiritual legacy? Who has shared the faith with you and is your spiritual father or grandfather?  Where have you experienced rejection wounds? Pray over those areas to ask God to heal those wounds.  Reflect on how God has worked in your history to bring you to where you are today.
