What Zero-COVID Protests Mean for China and the World

The widespread protests against the Chinese government are the most extensive since Tiananmen Square in 1989. The demonstrations are against both the severe zero-COVID policies and Xi Jinping?s rule. But the consequences of protesting in China are harsh. Andy speaks with two China experts, Xiao Qiang at the University of California Berkeley and Michael Beckley at Tufts University, about whether COVID rules will loosen, why these protests could mark the start of an even more authoritarian era, and what a coming crackdown on the Chinese people might look like.

With the next round of COVID-19 funding stalled in Congress, Americans face a future where vaccines and tests will no longer be free for everyone. Showing Up Every Day of the Year (with Shannon Watts)

The five people killed in Colorado Springs this month join 18,000 other Americans who died of gun homicides this year. Stephanie Wittels Wachs sits in for Andy to process the news with Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Shannon shares her experience hearing about the shooting as the mother of a nonbinary young adult living in Colorado, and takes stock of what her organization has accomplished since forming in the wake of Sandy Hook. Revisiting the Case for Climate Optimism

With a potentially split legislature on the horizon, passing climate policy could become a lot more difficult. We revisit a recent show on one piece of policy President Biden was able to get passed: the Inflation Reduction Act. Andy speaks with public policy expert Leah Stokes, who helped craft The IRA?s climate provisions. She explains how the law will transition the economy from fossil fuels to clean energy and get us closer to cutting pollution in half. NASA climatologist Gavin Schmidt tells Andy what actions are needed to prevent further global warming, and how the law could achieve that.

How the Midterms Could Give Rise to More MAGA Extremism (with Robert Draper)

MAGA Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene will hold major influence in the House if the GOP takes back the majority in the midterms. What impact will that have on the priorities set by Congress and the way our government functions? Andy speaks with journalist Robert Draper, whose new book, ?Weapons of Mass Delusion,? details how a new breed of Republicans have taken the politics of hysteria to even greater extremes. He forecasts a potential future where Greene becomes House speaker, an impeachment inquiry gets announced on Biden, and a government shutdown is used as leverage to pass conservative priorities supported by the MAGA base.

Saudi Arabia?s push for OPEC+ to cut oil production is fueling Russia's coffers in its war in Ukraine. Why the Jan. 6 Hearings Came Too Late

The Jan. 6 hearings were must-see TV for many Americans, but did they come too late?  Washington Post?s Karoun Demirjian and Politico?s Rachael Bade join Andy to explain why the hearings were in many ways a tacit acknowledgement that the second impeachment got botched. They take us inside the thoughts and minds of political leaders, including Nancy Pelosi?s aversion to impeachment and McConnell?s decision to vote against his gut, all heavily reported for their book, ?Unchecked: The Untold Story Behind Congress's Botched Impeachments of Donald Trump.?

COVID-19 Winter Wave Warning Signs (with Katelyn Jetelina)

How bad will this winter?s COVID-19 wave be? That?s what Andy asks epidemiologist Katelyn Jetelina, who?s been watching Europe closely and combing through the data on new variants. She predicts that a winter wave is about 90% likely and explains her biggest worries ? an Omicron subvariant called BQ.1.1 and a simultaneous flu wave with fewer masking requirements. How Hunger in America Drives the Obesity Epidemic

At its first hunger summit in 50 years, the White House announced a plan last week to end hunger and reduce obesity by 2030. Is that really possible, and what will it take to get there? Andy speaks with Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, who specializes in obesity medicine, about the link between obesity and hunger plus how race, stress, and poverty play a role. Using examples from her life and her practice, she explains why obesity should be viewed and treated as the disease it is, using methods like medicine and surgery in tandem with diet and exercise.

Why Democracy Really Is in Danger (with David Leonhardt)

Election denialism represents a fundamental breakdown in our democracy, a problem America has never experienced in its history. But that?s not it. There?s also an increasingly alarming disconnection between public opinion and the power to shape American politics. Andy explores these two threats with New York Times senior writer David Leonhardt, who explains why candidates that win the most votes are less and less able to take power and address the country?s problems. How We Can Put Every Kid through College

What if every baby could receive a college savings account, regardless of the financial situation they?re born into? That?s the mission behind baby bonds, a government policy championed by Senator Cory Booker that would provide children with a nest egg to start off adulthood. Andy speaks with economist Darrick Hamilton, who proposed the policy in 2010 as a mechanism to reduce the racial wealth gap in the United States, and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, who created a program in his city. They explain how baby bonds could eliminate college debt, why we should invest in kids we don?t personally know, and the money and public support it would take to expand local programs to the national level.

How to Treat Your COVID (with Drs. Bob Wachter and Taison Bell)

With lots of COVID treatments now available, how do you know which one, if any, is right for you? Andy found himself just as confused as the rest of us when he fell ill with the virus. Using his own experience as a case study (as well as the slightly more high profile case of President Biden), Andy seeks answers from UCSF Department of Medicine Chair Dr. Bob Wachter and UVA Critical Care and Infectious Disease Physician Dr. Taison Bell. They run through the four main treatment methods, which one works the best, and examine the link between Paxlovid and rebound cases.
