New Elvis Book:Destined To Die Young

In this episode I speak to Sally Hoedel author of the new book Elvis Destined To Die Young.

The book is the definitive examination of why the world lost Elvis Presley on August 16, 1977, when he was only forty-two years old.

Sally has painstakingly researched the subject and offers factual and scientific data?plus never-before-published information she gained by interviewing people who personally knew Elvis?to support her claim that Elvis Presley was never going to live a long life.

She examines Elvis Presley?a son, husband, father, and devoted friend?while ploughing through the negative hype and legendary myths surrounding the man. Elvis? downward spiral of health struggles is presented and, for the first time ever, it is revealed that he suffered from disease in nine of eleven bodily systems, five of which were present from birth. This book dispels the long-held theory that abuse of prescription drugs is what killed Elvis.

Destined To Die Young is published on December 14th and can be pre-ordered at

The Elvis House.Janice Fadal Interview

Eddie Fadal was a theater owner, disc jockey, and the sports writer for a local newspaper in Waco Texas.

His relationship with Elvis Presley began in 1956. He was a disc jockey at KRLD in Dallas,Texas, and Elvis was making the rounds. He had a lot of success in Texas, and Eddie met him at the radio station where he was promoting some records. Eddie liked his voice and thought he had great promise.

Elvis performed concerts in Waco?s Heart O? Texas Coliseum during those years and each time visited the Fadal home before and after his concerts.  At Elvis? invitation, Eddie accompanied him on tour during those days, as a trusted friend and traveling companion.

When Elvis was drafted into the United States Army in 1958, and stationed at nearby Fort Hood, he would often get away to the Fadal home on the weekends. Sometimes, during that six-month stint, he would unexpectedly show up in the middle of the week if he could get a day off from the base, along with his relatives and friends who often accompanied him to Waco

I?m delighted to be joined by Eddie?s daughter, Janice for this episode as she shares her memories of those days when she was a little Girl and Elvis called and stayed at her home.

Elvis at Stax. Part One

In this episode I cover the first of 2 recording sessions Elvis did at the Stax recording studio in Memphis.

Samples of all the songs recorded at the sessions are included along with outtakes, studio chatter and fun moments for your enjoyment.

In the Summer of 1973 Elvis endured a demanding schedule with a two-Week tour beginning in Mobile, Alabama, on June 20th, and finally ending on July 3rd in Atlanta Georgia after which he flew home to Graceland.

Awaiting him was a letter from his record company,  RCA, setting out expectations in no uncertain terms. The Company was concerned at the lack of commitment their No 1 recording artist was showing them.

In a most unusual move, RCA vice president George Parkhill wrote directly to the star: "We are planning a recording session in the middle of July," he informed Elvis, at the same time demanding more control over the recording process.; he was allowed to choose the studio he wanted, as long as he showed up when RCA dictated.

Elvis?s producer Felton Jarvis was required to fill out paperwork exactly as  requested, and was expected to produce a total of twenty-four masters of songs not previously recorded by Elvis. He was instructed  to produce a new pop album of ten songs, new single records (four sides), and ten cuts for a new religious album.

Tired from being on the road, depressed by divorce proceedings, and expecting his daughter Lisa Marie for a month-long visit, Elvis could not have faced the prospect of a string of recording sessions with much enthusiasm

The most practical arrangement was to stay in Memphis, and Marty Lacker, his long time friend and ex Memphis Mafia member, suggested making the 10 minute drive to the Stax studio on McLemore Avenue.

Elvis' final studio album."Today"

In this episode I am featuring the recording sessions for Elvis? 1975 album ?Today?

It was Elvis? 22nd and final studio album, and was recorded in RCA's Studio C, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, March 10th?12th, 1975.

The last time he was in Studio C was March 1972, when he recorded the well known hits "Burning Love",Always On My Mind? and "Separate Ways", it also served as the rehearsal venue for the MGM documentary, Elvis on Tour.

In advance of the sessions the studio took delivery of an ivory white Yamaha baby grand piano.

This would be used to great effect on a couple of the numbers recorded during the next 3 days.

March 10th 1975 was a Monday and Elvis arrived at the studio a little after 8pm that evening with his Daughter Lisa Marie and girlfriend Sheila Ryan.

Fans caught a glimpse of Elvis playing with Lisa in the backseat of the Limo as he was driven from his home on Monovale Drive to the studio.

The band were the same musicians he used on stage in Las Vegas & on tour.

James Burton, John Wilkinson on Guitars, Vocals and Guitar Charlie Hodge Bass: Duke Bardwell Drums: Ronnie Tutt ,Glen D. Hardin & Tony Brown on Piano, Clavinet: David Briggs & Greg Gordon

From Elvis In Memphis-The Recording Of The 1969 Landmark Album

In this episode I take a look at the recording sessions that produced one of

Elvis most successful albums.

From Elvis in Memphis was his tenth studio album and was released by RCA Records on June 17, 1969. It was recorded at American Sound Studio in Memphis during 2 Recording sessions Jan 13th to the 23rd and Feb 17th to the 22nd 1969

Elvis was riding on the crest of a wave at this time after the immense success of his TV Special that had aired the previous month on NBC and it has since been given the title ?Comeback Special? after him spending 7 years in Hollywood making mediocre movies and recording substandard songs for the soundtrack albums.

Typically the sessions began at around 7pm and concluded at 5am the following morning as Elvis preferred to record during those hours.

From Elvis in Memphis was released in June 1969. The album topped the UK Albums Chart. In the United States, it reached number thirteen on Billboard's Top 100 LP's. By January 28, 1970, the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of  America after selling over 500,000 copies

In 2003, the album was listed at number 190 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
