Start With This

Start With This

The creators of Welcome to Night Vale Jeffrey Cranor and Joseph Fink believe the only bad writing is not writing. Start With This is a podcast gone creativity playground designed to put your ideas in motion. Each episode centers around a writing topic. Then they give listeners two short assignments: something to consume and something to create. Make something?anything. Then make something else.

But How Does It End?

How do you land the ending?

CONSUME: Three options: 1)The last three pages of Inherent Vice, starting where the character gets on the freeway. 2) The last four minutes of Six Feet Under. Easily found on youtube by searching ?Six Feet Under ending?. 3) Pick one of your favorite ending. Could be a podcast, movie, tv show, book, whatever. Reexamine it carefully. What kind of ending is it? Is it mirroring the opening? Is it following the characters to the end? Is it a tangent? Or is it doing something else? Does it have a button? Most importantly, what specifically makes it a great ending for you? The more you can pay attention to that, the more you can develop your own tastes of what you like in your own work.

CREATE: Think of your least favorite film or book or show. Not one you hate or one that is offensive and irredeemable in your mind. Just a story you found lacking. Now write a 200-400 review of that film, book, or show. But make it a rave review. No need for superlatives like masterpiece or perfection. Focus your review on all the things that this story got right.

CONSUME: The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett or its sequel, World Without End. Or, for a less committal and free option, the BBC fiction podcast "Home Front"

CREATE: Think about an obscure subject you know a great deal about. Now write a 200-600 word story that has the following plot: Person A, who is evil, kidnaps Person B, who is good. Person C, who is also good, rescues Person B, goodly, and in the process, Person A accidentally falls off a cliff because they are evil and that?s what happens to evil. Person B and Person C live happily ever after. You can play with the details but you get the point, a simple melodramatic story.

As It Happens

Celebrating the act of daily creation with Jonathan Mann.

CONSUME: Go listen to more of Jonathan Mann?s podcast ?As It Happens?

CREATE: Start with the same basic image as Jonathan: the growing cloud of space debris around earth. Write a 100-200 word piece about the space debris. But more important than the final product, think through your creative decisions. Notice yourself deciding on tone (angry? Sad? Playful?). Notice what images interest you. Notice the metaphors you use, and why you chose those ones. Try in writing this very short piece, to be aware of the choices you make every time you create anything, and why you make those choices (and also if there are choices you usually make, and if you could choose something else instead)

Hooptedoodle

Stop and describe the roses.

CONSUME: Chapter 1 of John Steinbeck?s East of Eden

CREATE: Write a 200 or so word description of your neighborhood. Give us a texture of the sights and the smells and the sounds. Remember that what you?re going for here is more poetry and language than storytelling. Write something real pretty. Now go to the Random Mood Generator (https://perchance.org/mood). Non-Lovecraftian Horror

There's so much more to horror, we couldn?t stop at Lovecraft.

CONSUME: Watch any of the movies on Joseph?s horror movie recommendation list: https://twitter.com/PlanetofFinks/status/1311695218505379841?s=20

CREATE: Think about an irrational fear you have of something real. This should not be a fear that is reasonable, but something like: fear of flying, fear of wasps, fear of the dark (these are all just fears Joseph has, I?m sure you have your own). Now instead of thinking about the source of that fear, think about your own feelings. What kinds of fears are activated by this phobia? Loss of control? Fear of the unknown? Fear of pain? Now write a 300-500 word story about that fear, but replace the focus of your fear (wasps, flying, etc.) with a supernatural entity. Could be a ghost or a zombie or a demon or an alien or whatever. But still, even though it?s now a supernatural story, try to recreate the exact feeling of fear your phobia gives you.

Lovecraftian Horror

Lovecraft was a racist and a bad writer, yet his ideas and his stories live on. So what do we do with them?

CONSUME: ?The Ballad of Black Tom? (novella) by Victor Lavalle, ?Lovecraft Country? (tv series) on HBO, ?The City We Became? (novel) by NK Jemisin

CREATE: 1) Write 100-200 words about a hole that appears in the sky. Use this to explore fear of the unknown. When did the hole appear? What is it doing from our perspective? Don?t describe what?s in the hole or how it formed. Just describe how people react to its appearance. 2) Write 100-200 words about exactly what the hole is, and what it does. This second story can just be a sketch. Allow yourself to strip away all horror and just see the hole for exactly what it is.

Agency

A character has a problem. As a result of that problem, they make a decision. As a result of that decision, they change.

CONSUME: ?Schitt?s Creek? on Netflix

CREATE: Write a 200-word story about a super spy who has been incapacitated by a super villain. He?s chained to a conveyor belt on his way into an incinerator. Or locked inside a cage being lowered into the ocean. Then they make a decision based on their experience. Maybe it?s action, strength, wit, or intelligence. But they make a decision, and that decision has a consequence (they escape! They get injured! A bystander gets hurt!). And in the end, something significant has changed for them, and it?s because of that choice and the consequence.

CONSUME: ?Small Triumph Big Speech? podcast by Dylan Marron

CREATE: Write a 200-word story about something mundane you did today (made toast, brushed your teeth, exercised for 30 minutes). But exaggerate the details. How did your toast change your day, your life, the world even? Put dramatic significance on your workout. What were you training for? Exposition

CONSUME: "Anthropocene Reviewed" podcast by John Green

CREATE: Write a 200 word story about a child. Give it a beginning, middle and an end. Something happened to this child. Maybe it was good. Maybe it was bad. But whatever it is clearly changes the child in the end of your story. Now write a 200-word story about that child as an adult. This adult is involved in a bank robbery. Maybe they?re the robber, or the cops, or a witness, or a get away driver, or a bank teller. Remember your first story when you write the second, but concentrate only on the bank robbery story.

Honesty

What does it mean to tell your story honestly?

Consume: Moonface by James Kim

Create: Take a moment in your life in which you remember exactly how you felt. Think through all the details of your feelings. How did the feelings start? How did they develop? What happened to those feelings? Tell that story. Except: change every other factual detail. Create a fictional story about someone who is not you, doing something you weren?t doing. It could be a member of a biker gang in the 50s or an alien in some distant future world. But keep the honest details of your feelings there. Outlining

Outlining your story is like a puzzle for plot. In this episode, we talk about how mapping out what will happen before you start writing gives your story shape, and makes it much easier to write. This way, you can land a satisfying ending and give focus to your process to free your brain up for new discoveries.

Consume: Listen to The Shadows, a six-episode podcast series by Kaitlin Prest.

Create: Write a six section outline with a max word count of 60 words for each section. Give your project a beginning, middle, and end. Have the character?s growth matches the plot, and that the ending is set up by the structure. The goal is to figure out what happens within each section.

Slowness

We talk a lot about creating with enough speed to turn writing into habit, but working slowly puts the finish line so far out of sight that you can focus on something other than the final outcome. Slowness is a way to make something big by allowing you to break your writing down into manageable parts, and gives you enough space to enjoy the process. It also means you can work a little bit on something everyday, even if you don?t know what it is yet.

**
**Consume: The Taxonomy of Air, a visual art piece by Susan D?Amato

Create: Every day for one week, set aside the time to write three sentences. For the first four days, just get those sentences out and don't think about the bigger picture. On day five, start thinking about where the piece is going. For the last three days, bring the piece to an end.

Repetition

Your writing needs a message. The way you deliver this message is up to you. Repetition is one way to get this message across. There?s almost a magic power in centering on a message, spiraling outward, and circling back to the message again and again. In this episode, we talk about using repetition to review an idea, create rhythm, reinforce comprehension, drive emphasis, and to disorient.

Word Count

In writing, words are your currency. So how can you maximize your spending on a budget? In this episode, we talk about how word counts can break up longer projects into achievable goals, are a form of accountability in your own process, and influence how your audience perceives your work. Plus, we discuss how knowing your own voice will help you decide how many words you want to dedicate to describing something in great detail or with great efficiency.

Consume: Geoff Ryman?s novel 253. Learn more about it on Wikipedia and access it on Archive.org

Create: Use a random number generator to generate ten numbers between 1-100. These ten numbers are now your word counts for each section of a ten paragraph writing piece. Follow the counts exactly and pay attention to how the word counts impact the pacing and flow. For added difficulty, find a way to let the word count influence the content of the story.

Stereo is a powerful, audio-specific tool that can fill out a sound in the same way that we experience sound in the world. Consume: Listen Nickel Creek?s album, ?A Dotted Line?

I Have an Idea for a Podcast

The heart of a good podcast isn?t in expensive mics or a nice  studio? it?s in the idea. We talk through four litmus tests to test the strength of your idea: specificity, novelty, practicality, and repeatability. Honing in on these elements will help you uncover what?s exciting about your idea, and what will make it successful. While this episode focuses on podcasting, these tests are good to consider for any artistic idea.

Consume: Listen to The Worst Idea of All Time and think about how it?s specific, novel, practical, and repeatable.

Create: Take a podcast (or any artistic idea) idea you have and walk through the four litmus tests.
Specificity: Write the one sentence elevator pitch for your podcast.
Novelty: Write one sentence about what makes your podcast different.

Rhythm & Rhyme

Poetry can be intimidating. It?s more technical than prose, and there?s an extensive world of theory and study behind it. But that doesn?t mean you can?t play around with it in your writing, and even be good at it! In this episode, Jeffrey and Joseph talk about how we naturally use poetic elements in our everyday speech, and how it can lend structure to get to the heart of what you?re describing.

Consume: Read Ballad in A by Cathy Park Hong. Try to read it aloud if you can!

Then check out this short feature article on Cathy Park Hong and her use of the univocalic.

Create: Write a 4-line, rhyming, univocalic poem. That means you pick a vowel and use only that vowel when you write. It doesn?t have to be good, just done!
