Is Your Acne Caused By What You're Eating?

Is Your Acne Caused By What You're Eating? | This episode is brought to you by TrueDark

The food you eat can have a major influence on the quality of your skin. Yet, conventional medicine primarily deals with acne by lathering potions and lotions on the skin or tackling it with antibiotics or topical steroids. In fact, we spend over a billion dollars on prescriptions and over-the-counter products to cure acne. But eliminating acne is best approached as an inside job.

In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with his colleagues at The UltraWellness Center about how what we eat can drive acne. They also discuss the biggest food culprits, as well as how to tell what foods might be causing an issue for you.

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine?s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

How To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

How To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Kettle & Fire

Changes in environmental mercury levels have been dramatic in recent decades; industrial exposure to mercury is significant and mostly comes from coal-burning and chlor-alkali plants. The more mercury we are exposed to, the more we are likely we are to be toxic. The main ways that humans are exposed to mercury are from contaminated fish and dental amalgams or silver fillings. And while some of us are very good at detoxifying mercury and other toxins, some people have genetic variations (called polymorphisms) that make them more prone to metal toxicity. Mercury can affect nearly all your organs, especially the brain, heart, kidneys, and gut, and many chronic diseases may be caused or worsened by mercury, including neurologic disease, ADHD, autism, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and more.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss how they test for, diagnose, and treat mercury toxicity. Dr. Hyman also shares his own personal experience recovering from mercury poisoning.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. How Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected

How Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected | This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp

Racial and ethnic disparities are sadly alive and well when it comes to health outcomes, land ownership, and how food is grown in the US. White farmers are at an overwhelming advantage when it comes to owning land and they see the greatest benefit from the 97% of the income generated by it. Additionally, lack of access to land and fresh food is a form of oppression that sets communities up for generational illness and strife. These are serious racial and ethnic inequalities happening in our current day and age, but they stem from the long-standing structural discrimination that our agricultural system is rooted in. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman explores these topics with Karen Washington and Leah Penniman.

Karen Washington is a farmer, activist, and food advocate. She is the Co-owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. In 2010, Karen Co-Founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization supporting growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 Karen was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award. Karen serves on the boards of the New York Botanical Gardens, SoulFire Farm, the Mary Mitchell Center, Why Hunger, and Farm School NYC.

Karen shares her inspiring story of how starting a garden in her backyard in The Bronx led her to understand the bigger issues of food insecurity in underserved communities. As a former physical therapist looking into her patients? health, she noticed Black and Brown clients were suffering with poor diet and inaccessibility to healthy foods, while white communities were not.

Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to land.

As Co-Executive Director, Leah is part of a team that facilitates powerful food sovereignty programs?including farmer training for Black and Brown people, a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid, and domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system. Her book, Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm's Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land is a love song for the land and her people.

From a young age, Leah had a deep reverence for nature and the land. This led her to learn about historical regenerative farming practices and share that knowledge with others. It also led her to a greater understanding of our food system and why it?s a major propellor in racial inequality. President Johnson?s 1865 overturn of General William Sherman?s ?40 acres and a mule? Order had massive implications for the future of Black farmers that we are still feeling the consequences of today.

What Is Your Constipation Telling You About Your Overall Health And How To FIx It with Dr. George Papanicolaou

What Is Your Constipation Telling You About Your Overall Health And How To Fix It | This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth and Belcampo

Constipation is an often uncomfortable and extremely prevalent condition affecting close to 80 million people. And while constipation might be common, it is definitely not normal and it can have disastrous consequences. Having healthy digestion and eliminating waste every day (ideally twice or three times a day!) is critical to your overall health. Your liver flushes out toxins and dumps them into your intestines. However, if your digestive system isn?t working optimally, then all those toxins and waste can get reabsorbed into your body. So, it makes sense that constipation has been linked to multiple diseases, including cancer and even Parkinson?s disease, plus it actually makes you feel like crap!

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the importance of getting to the root cause of constipation. They share information on the most common drivers of constipation including diet, chronic stress, antibiotic overuse, and a wide range of many other issues.

George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy ?Whole Life Wellness?. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health ? a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

Healing Foods That Taste Great

Healing Foods That Taste Great | This episode is brought to you by Belcampo

The more we can learn about using food as medicine, the more power we have to reach our health goals. Food has the power to prevent and reverse disease; there can be so many powerful (and delicious) benefits waiting for you in each bite. There are powerful compounds in foods?like curcumin, genistein, catechins, lycopene, resveratrol, quercetin?that have medicinal impacts on the body. By keeping flavor and health benefits on the same parallel, we can feed the body, mind, and soul with each well-planned bite.

In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Chef David Bouley and Dr. William Li about how we can cook our way out of illness by aligning our foods to feed our health and get incredible flavor and variety all at once.

Among many accolades, Chef David Bouley earned several four-star reviews in The New York Times; seven James Beard Foundation awards for best restaurant and best chef; he was named ?Best Chef in America? by Herald-Tribune; he received the TripAdvisor Traveler?s Choice Awards ?The Best Restaurant in the United States? and #14 in the world; a 29 out of 30 rating in Zagat, and ranked #1 in New York City for many years. Chef Bouley is known as one of the most health-conscious chefs in the world, with a strong focus for diners with health concerns. He is currently contracted for a new book, Living Pantry, that will provide the building blocks for home cooking to deliver great taste and health benefits with easy execution.

William Li, MD, is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker, and author of Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. He is best known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation. His groundbreaking work has impacted more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease, and obesity. His TED Talk, ?Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?? has garnered more than 11 million views. Can Regenerative Agriculture Reverse Climate Change And Chronic Disease? with Allen Williams

Can Regenerative Agriculture Reverse Climate Change And Chronic Disease? | This episode is sponsored by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Cozy Earth

When we look at rapidly declining soil health, rising rates of depression and suicide in farmers, and our climate crisis, it can be easy to wonder how we got here. The answer is multifaceted, but a common theme of industrialized agriculture runs throughout. Today on The Doctor?s Farmacy I talk to Allen Williams about how we have strayed from beneficial regenerative farming practices to adopt destructive ones, and how to find our way back.

Allen is a founding partner of Understanding Ag, LLC and the Soil Health Academy, and is a partner in Joyce Farms, Inc. He has consulted with more than 4,000 farmers and ranchers in the US and other countries, on operations ranging from a few acres to over 1 million acres. Allen and his partners pioneered many of the early regenerative agriculture principles and practices and now teach those to farmers globally. He is a ?recovering academic,? having served 15 years on the faculty at Louisiana Tech University and Mississippi State University teaching genetics and physiology. Allen has been featured in the Carbon Nation film series, Soil Carbon Cowboys, on the Dr. Oz show, ABC Food Forecast News, and in Kiss The Ground, A Regenerative Secret, The Farmer?s Footprint film series, and the Sacred Cow film series.

How Eliminating Gluten May Improve Anxiety & Depression

How Eliminating Gluten May Improve Anxiety & Depression | This episode is brought to you by Kettle & Fire

When it comes to diet and health, we most often think about physical health. But what we eat affects more than our bodies; it also affects our brains. And recent studies have shown that diet can have a profound impact on mental health conditions ranging from ADHD to depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, OCD, dementia, and beyond.

In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Uma Naido about how one of the most common food offenders she sees with her patients is gluten. They discuss the correlation between anxiety and consuming gluten, even in those without celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. He also speaks with Maggie Ward to discuss why gluten sensitivity and intolerance have been on the rise in recent decades, and how to determine if it is a problem for you.

Michelin-starred chef David Bouley described Dr. Uma Naidoo as the world?s first ?triple threat? in the food as medicine space. She is a Harvard trained psychiatrist, Professional Chef and Nutrition Specialist. Her niche work is in Nutritional Psychiatry and she is regarded both nationally and internationally as a medical pioneer in this more newly recognized field.

In her role as a Clinical Scientist, Dr. Naidoo founded and directs the first hospital-based clinical service in Nutritional Psychiatry in the US. She is the Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Director of Nutritional Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital Academy while serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Naidoo is the author of, This is Your Brain on Food, released August 4, 2020. In her book, she shows the cutting-edge science explaining the ways in which food contributes to our mental health and how a sound diet can help treat and prevent a wide range of psychological and cognitive health issues, from ADHD to anxiety, depression, OCD, and others.

Maggie Ward, MS, RD, LDN, is the Nutrition Director at The UltraWellness Center. Maggie holds a master?s degree in Nutrition from Bastyr University which focuses on using whole foods for holistic Nutrition Therapy. In addition, she completed her requirements to become a registered dietitian at Westchester Medical Center in NY. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center team in 2008, Maggie worked at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York providing nutrition counseling to children and families dealing with HIV. She also taught at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan and other sites throughout New York City, teaching nutritionally focused cooking classes for children and adults. Much of her focus is on food allergies, digestive disorders, inflammatory conditions, Pediatrics and Sports Nutrition. Maggie has been counseling individuals, families, and business groups on therapeutic diets to address various health concerns for more than 15 years. Her ongoing clinical training through the Institute for Functional Medicine uses a systems biology approach when working with those who suffer from chronic and acute conditions to help them find their path to healing. She has a passion for cooking and reconnecting people with their potential to heal using whole, organic and local foods.

We have an energy crisis on our hands. I?m not talking about fossil fuels, I?m talking about a breakdown of the body?s internal energy systems that now affects even young adults in their prime. It might surprise you to learn that it?s not normal to feel tired all the time. Our on-the-go culture has made it the norm. But when we take a look at how the body?s mitochondria function (these are our tiny but powerful cellular energy factories) we see that so much of our modern lives is damaging our mitochondria and resulting in this energy deficit.

I?m so excited to talk to Dr. Steven Gundry about this topic on this episode of The Doctor?s Farmacy. Dr. Steven Gundry is one of the world?s top cardiothoracic surgeons and a pioneer in nutrition, as well as medical director at The International Heart and Lung Institute Center for Restorative Medicine. He is author of many New York Times bestselling books including The Plant Paradox, and The Plant Paradox Cookbook, and The Longevity Paradox: How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age, and just released The Energy Paradox: What to Do When Your Get-Up-and-Go Has Got Up and Gone. He also is the founder of GundryMD, a line of wellness products and supplements, and host of The Dr. Gundry Podcast.

The Functional Medicine Approach To Hypothyroidism And Hashimoto?s Disease with Dr. George Papanicolaou

The Functional Medicine Approach To Hypothyroidism And Hashimoto?s Disease | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Rupa Health

While thyroid disease can occur in various forms, one of the most common is called Hashimoto?s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the thyroid gland and diminishes its ability to create precious hormones?ones that impact every cell of the body. Hashimoto?s is the leading cause of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) in the US, with women at much higher risk, being 7 to 8 times more likely than men to get it. Because of its autoimmune component, people with Hashimoto?s are actually at a higher risk of developing other autoimmune diseases as well. The good news is that the right diet and lifestyle choices can work wonders when it comes to treating and healing the thyroid.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism and Hashimoto?s disease. They also delve into common triggers of Hashimoto?s disease, and much more.

Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

Is Climate Change Fixable? A Conversation With California?s EPA Secretary with Jared Blumenfeld

Is Climate Change Fixable? A Conversation With California?s EPA Secretary | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Beekeepers Naturals

We?re divorced from nature and disconnected from wild places. I think this has really hurt us in multiple ways, some of which we are still figuring out, but especially in the way it?s allowed people to desecrate the land, air, and water we rely on for life. Yet people are so resistant to acknowledging climate change and what needs to be done. This could be because of the doom-and-gloom approach many folks take that can be outright depressing or the overwhelming amount of inputs that cause people to simply shut down. It might also just be hard to wrap our heads around how it?s possible to destroy something as vast as the ocean and sky.

Today on The Doctor?s Farmacy, I?m hoping to provide you with a different perspective on climate change revolving around hope and positivity. Yes, we still have a long way to go, but we?re seeing some great initiatives and outcomes in places like California where the climate and environment are deemed worthy investments. My guest today is the perfect person to share about those projects, challenges, and victories. Jared Blumenfeld is California?s Secretary for Environmental Protection. Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom in January, he is one of America?s most innovative environmental leaders, with more than 25 years of environmental policy and management experience at the local, national and international levels.

Gestational diabetes affects up to 10% of women during pregnancy. It can have long-term adverse effects for both the mother and the child. Not only does it put the baby at risk for above-average birth weight, but gestational diabetes in the mother can also lead to increased risk of insulin resistance, diabetes, and weight gain for the child in adulthood. It can also lead to higher rates of type 1 and type 2 diabetes post-pregnancy for the mother.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to preventing and treating gestational diabetes. They discuss the common drivers of gestational diabetes, why pre-diabetes in the mother is also a concern, and much more.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. The Pegan Diet: Eat For Gut Health

The gut microbiome is likely the most important regulator of our overall health. Unfortunately, our modern diet, gut-busting lifestyle, environmental toxins, and other factors all feed the bad bugs in our gut and drive inflammation, which is at the root of almost all chronic diseases and obesity. Sixty percent of our immune system is in our gut, right under a one-cell thin layer of gut lining. When we treat this lining unkindly, we develop a leaky gut, allowing food proteins, microbes, and microbial toxins to ?leak? into our bloodstream, triggering our immune system to start fighting the foreign invaders. We call this dysbiosis (as opposed to symbiosis) an imbalanced gut microbiome. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses how to eat for gut health, the fifteenth principle in his new book, ?The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World? available now at pegandiet.com

The Pegan Diet is Dr. Hyman?s definitive guide to using food as medicine and understanding how food impacts every system of our body. Becoming Nobody: The Key To Freedom And Happiness with Rameshwar Das

Becoming Nobody: The Key To Freedom And Happiness | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and Athletic Greens

Our higher and lower-self are always around, but who are we listening to most of the time? Who is having the conversation in our heads? Taking a deeper look at my level of awareness led me to study Buddhism in college and though I changed course to pursue a career in medicine, spiritual growth has always remained a passion for me. I think as humans we need a mass recognition that we are all one; we need to see that inside we?re all the same. Learning from others is a key part of the journey to greater awareness and there are so many teachers I?ve found throughout my life that have helped me do that. Today?s guest on The Doctor?s Farmacy is one of them.

Rameshwar Das has been navigating a spiritual path for 50 years. Ramesh met Ram Dass in 1968 and spent time with Neem Karoli Baba in India from 1970-72. He learned Vipassana meditation from Goenka in India. Ramesh has worked as an artist, photographer, environmentalist, and writer. He has collaborated on many projects with Ram Dass over the years, including the original Be Here Now, and the Love Serve Remember recordings, and is co-author with Ram Dass on three books, Be Love Now, Polishing the Mirror, and Being Ram Dass.

The Pegan Diet: Leverage Personalized Nutrition For Optimal Health

Food is not just calories or energy; food is information, instructions that upgrade or downgrade your biology with every bite. Think of it like code that programs your software. Your hardware is your genes. Your software is how those genes are turned on or off. Food regulates not only your genes but also your hormones, like insulin, testosterone, estrogen, and thyroid. It alters your brain chemistry, producing happy chemicals, and it can even trigger addictive patterns. So how can you personalize your diet (and nutritional needs) to optimize your health?

In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses how to leverage personalized nutrition for optimal health, the twelfth principle in his new book, ?The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World? available now at pegandiet.com

The Pegan Diet is Dr. Hyman?s definitive guide to using food as medicine and understanding how food impacts every system of our body. Why Eliminating Meat From Our Diet Isn?t The Solution To Climate Change with Anya Fernald

Why Eliminating Meat From Our Diet Isn?t The Solution To Climate Change | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and BLUBlox

Human health is dependent on planetary health. A healthy planet coincides with healthy animals; when we look at the way public health and our climate have changed with the industrialization of agriculture, animals are a key focus. We often hear the argument that in order to solve climate change we need to stop eating meat. What these people aren?t realizing is that animal agriculture done right is actually part of the solution. That is a big stipulation because the methods used to raise meat can make or break our climate crisis and our health.

I?m thrilled to sit down today with Anya Fernald to discuss the ins and outs of regenerative farming and animal practices. Anya Fernald is the co-founder and CEO of Belcampo. Belcampo operates 27,000 acres of organic farmland in California and processes its own livestock for sale in its own butcher shops and restaurants. Anya has two decades of leadership and entrepreneurship experience in high-quality, organic and premium foods. Given her expertise on meat and leadership within the meat industry, Anya has been profiled in The New Yorker and The New York Times, and has served as a regular judge on Iron Chef America on The Food Network since 2009. She has been recognized as one of Inc. Magazine?s 100 Female Founders, one of the 40 under 40 by Food & Wine, and was named a Nifty Fifty by The New York Times.

Autism: Getting To The Root Cause With Functional Medicine with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Autism: Getting To The Root Cause With Functional Medicine | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Betterhelp

Rates of autism have skyrocketed over the years, from an estimated 1 child in 5,000 in the 1960s and 1970s to just 1 in 54 kids today. The diagnosis of autism can be shocking and difficult for parents and families which may leave them feeling isolated, alone, helpless, and hopeless, but it doesn?t have to be that way. While we don?t have all the answers, and more research is needed to identify and validate the causes and treatment of autism, there are new signs of hope. And there is no such thing as ?autism.? Rather there are ?autisms??different patterns of biological dysfunction unique to each child that result in multiple insults to the brain that all manifest with symptoms we call autism. Like every condition or illness, the key is to dig into the layers and peel the onion to discover what is really happening. It is not usually one thing but a collection of insults, toxins, and deficiencies piled on susceptible genetics that leads to autism.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating children with autism. They also share specific patient stories that they have treated.

Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

The Pegan Diet: Eat Like A Regenetarian

Our agriculture system is destructive? for the earth and for human health. The food produced by industrial agriculture leads to at least 11 million deaths a year and drives our obesity epidemic. We need to build a regenerative system?one that regenerates the earth and human health. Regenerative agriculture is more profitable for farmers, produces higher yields, and better-quality food. When we vote with our dollars and our forks by choosing regeneratively grown food, we send a message to Big Food that we want more sustainable farms. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses how to eat like a regenetarian, the ninth principle in his new book, ?The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World? out February 23, 2021. Heavy Metals And Health: The Untold Story with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

Heavy Metals And Health: The Untold Story | This episode is sponsored by Joovv and AquaTru

We live in an environment steeped in chemicals that our bodies were not designed to process. When it comes to toxins one plus one does not equal two. There is a compounded effect. Chronic toxicity can wreak havoc on our health and result in symptoms ranging from fatigue to sleep and skin issues. It can also be related to autoimmune issues, diabetes, hypertension, Parkinson?s, Alzheimer?s, autism, and many other conditions. Unfortunately, conventional medicine rarely examines the role of toxic load when it comes to treating these conditions.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to assessing a patient's toxic load and supporting the body to detoxify and reduce high levels of heavy metals. They also share their personal experiences treating patients in this area.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. The Pegan Diet: Have Fats With Every Meal

Fat has been unfairly vilified for decades. The truth is that the right fats can make you healthy and lean, and can fuel your brain, while the wrong fats can be deadly. Unlike sugar, which is pretty much all bad, fats are complicated. Some people thrive on a high-fat diet, while others gain weight and struggle with abnormal cholesterol. However, even though fats are complicated, eating a fat-free diet is not good for your health. We need fats to survive. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman discusses why we should be eating fats with every meal, the seventh principle in his new book, ?The Pegan Diet: 21 Practical Principles for Reclaiming Your Health in a Nutritionally Confusing World? out February 23, 2021. Addressing The Root Causes Of Childhood Obesity with Dr. Elizabeth Boham

Addressing The Root Causes Of Childhood Obesity | This episode is sponsored by Beekeepers Naturals and BLUblox

Our children are unfortunately being born into a toxic food environment. Currently, a third of American kids are overweight or obese and in addition to rising rates of childhood obesity, we are also seeing a significant increase in type 2 diabetes in children. Overweight children not only face unfair stigma and judgment, but they are also more prone to battling weight issues in adulthood. Yet, food manufacturers continue to produce and peddle junk to our children that we loosely call food. The good news is that you have control over what foods you bring into your home and the type of modeling you provide for your children when it comes to what to eat.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to combating childhood obesity and they share patient cases they have treated related to childhood obesity.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. The Pegan Diet: Eat Your Meat As Medicine

The truth about meat is more nuanced than whether it is good or bad. While factory-farmed red meat is an environmental and climate catastrophe, is inhumane, and may have adverse health consequences, this is not true of meat from regeneratively raised animals. The real question we should be asking is, is meat healthy or harmful? Returning To Ancient Remedies To Promote Health with Dr. Josh Axe

Returning To Ancient Remedies To Promote Health | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, ButcherBox, and Athletic Greens

Modern medicine has come a long way, there?s no doubt about it. But our ancient ancestors had an in-depth understanding of how to use food and plants as medicine and this wisdom still holds true today. Our conventional medical system heavily relies on prescription medication to silence, or ?manage,? symptoms. I call this the ?pill-for-ever-ill? model of medicine. This often turns into a lifelong dependence without ever getting to the root of the problem. If we instead look at where the imbalance is stemming from and use a variety of tools to treat it?like food, stress reduction, herbs, etc.?we can see profound improvements and, many times, a reversal of disease.

I was so happy to connect with Dr. Josh Axe to talk more about how ancient remedies can help us create the vibrant health we deserve and avoid lifelong health struggles. Dr. Axe is a certified doctor of natural medicine, a doctor of chiropractic, and a clinical nutritionist with a passion to help people get healthy by empowering them to use nutrition to fuel their health. He is the bestselling author of Keto Diet, Eat Dirt, and Collagen Diet and author of the book Ancient Remedies. He is also the co-founder of Ancient Nutrition, which provides protein powders, holistic supplements, vitamins, essential oils and more to the modern world. Is Histamine Intolerance The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms? with Dr. Todd LePine

Is Histamine Intolerance The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms? | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Dr. Hyman's Sleep Master Class.

Most people are familiar with certain histamine conditions, such as the development of a welt from a bee sting or hives from a peanut allergy. However, symptoms ranging from brain fog to digestive problems, menstrual cycle problems, nausea, vomiting, edema, palpitations, and anxiety can all also result from issues of histamine intolerance. Unfortunately, this issue commonly goes undiagnosed, often resulting in years of ongoing frustration and suffering among individuals struggling to find the cause of their mysterious symptoms.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to talk about how they work with patients to get to the root cause of histamine intolerance. They discuss the rising prevalence of mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), how gut health influences histamine, and much more.

His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

The Real Story About COVID Vaccines: What We Know, What We Don?t with Dale Harrison

The Real Story About COVID Vaccines: What We Know, What We Don?t | This episode is brought to you by Bioptimizers, Thrive Market, and Athletic Greens.

There?s no way around it, we?re being bombarded by an insane amount of information when it comes to COVID-19, and not all of it makes sense. As vaccines make their way across the country, the questions are only increasing and it can feel overwhelming to find answers from expert sources. While we don?t have all the answers, we are learning more every day. We?ve seen that for people 15 and older, COVID-19 can double our risk of dying this year. And while we know chronic disease puts us at an increased risk for severity and death, we don?t know why some perfectly healthy people still can?t fight this virus off. We?re seeing that vaccines will be a dramatic help for this virus, helping to reduce the risk of severe symptoms and death, but that they won?t stop transmission.

I really wanted to talk to someone in-depth about where we are with COVID-19, what we can count on with the vaccines, and what we still don?t know. I knew Dale Harrison would be the perfect scientist to help me break down this topic. Dale is a senior executive with more than 20 years of experience in the biotech industry. He has held multiple VP and C-level positions with companies in the research tools and molecular diagnostics sectors. Dale currently works as a consultant with companies that are developing new clinical diagnostic platforms, including a company developing a CRISPR-based COVID test for the OTC market, and a metagenomics-based NGS platform for infectious disease testing in the human transplant market.

Panic Attacks: Biology or Psychology with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Panic Attacks: Biology or Psychology | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Dr. Hyman?s Sleep Master Class

We are living in an age of anxiety; and we know that stress wreaks havoc on our health in so many ways, physiologically, emotionally, and mentally. For many people of all ages, stress can lead to anxiety and debilitating panic attacks. While conventional medicine typically treats anxiety and panic attacks as a diagnosis, Functional Medicine views anxiety and panic attacks as symptoms and seeks to get to the root cause underlying these issues.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating panic attacks. They explore the range of physiological considerations they explore when treating patients who are experiencing panic attacks, as well as how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma can be treated to reduce anxiety and eliminate panic attacks.

Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

Changing Our Beliefs Changes Our Lives: Discover How with Shelly Lefkoe

Changing Our Beliefs Changes Our Life: Discover How | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market, Athletic Greens, and Four Sigmatic

A belief is a statement about reality that we believe to be absolutely true?but that doesn?t mean that it is. A belief may be holding us back from reaching our goals and feeling truly content and we may not even be conscious that we have it. I?ve experienced how powerful it can be to recognize limiting beliefs and do the work to change them. I knew that I had traumatic experiences as a child that impacted me as an adult, but I had no idea how deeply they were affecting me. Working with a coach helped me identify the root of the belief (similar to the Functional Medicine approach to health) so that I could see the pattern and begin reframing what I know to be true.

I?m so excited that my coach and good friend Shelly Lefkoe is today?s podcast guest. Shelly is a co-founder and Vice President of Lefkoe Institute, a San Francisco Bay Area firm whose mission is ?To significantly improve the quality of life on the planet by having people recreate their lives and live as the unlimited possibilities they are.? Shelly has had the privilege of helping thousands of clients worldwide rid themselves of a wide variety of problems including phobias, relationships that never seem to work, violence, procrastination, unwillingness to confront people, health and wellness issues, and sexual dysfunction. Her clients have been able to eliminate emotional patterns such as fear, hostility, shyness, anxiety, depression, worry about what people think of them, and a negative sense of themselves.
