The Holderness Family Podcast

Welcome to the Holderness Family Podcast!  On Facebook and YouTube we are known as The Holderness Family. We make those silly songs and skits with our kids, but on this podcast, it's just us... the real us.  The non-Christmas-jammies-us, the why-can't-my-socks-be-on-the-kitchen-counter-us (Penn) the why-do-I-have-to-go-outside-and-talk-to-people-us (Kim). On this podcast, we will share the real-life ups and downs of living together, working together, raising kids together, in what we hope is a funny and entertaining way.  We will be taking questions that we are likely unqualified to answer (absolutely unqualified to answer) but we are hoping that the show will make all of your beautiful families realize you're not alone.  You're not alone. We are all a hot mess... a HolderMess.  The HolderMess: the Holderness Family Podcast Thank you for subscribing and listening! Hosted by Kim & Penn Holderness Produced by Max Trujillo

Taking A Leap of Faith

Penn and I went on Instagram to ask you about a time you took a huge leap and also what has held you back. (And wow, some of you guys are braver than we are!) We share your answers as well as our ?pre-flight checklist? of things that helped us take a leap or things we wish we did. Have you ever taken a big leap?

About the Holderness Family?: Penn, Kim, Lola, and Penn Charles Holderness create original music, parodies, and Vlogs for YouTube and Facebook to poke fun of themselves and celebrate the absurdity in circumstances most families face in their day to day life. They published "Christmas Jammies" in December 2013 and life hasn't been the same. Since then, their popular parodies, "All About That Baste", "Baby Got Class," and original music "Snow Day" have received national news coverage. Penn, the Dad, took a chance and left his job as a news anchor to join his wife Kim, the Mom, at their video production and digital marketing company, Greenroom Communications, LLC. Lola and Penn Charles are always happy, respectful and eat all of their vegetables (that last sentence is a lie).

Why "I'm Sorry" Sucks

This week, Penn and I talk about how to really understand one another when in an argument. When you're in a fight, using the phrase ?I?m Sorry? flippantly is really more about making yourself feel better than your partner. We used to use "I'm Sorry" as a "please-don't-be-mad-at-me-let's-just-let-this-go" Band-Aid, and it did us a lot more harm than good.

Not taking the time to understand your partner can fester into having an insecure sense of attachment, among other things. Luckily, we have some magic words to help in this episode.

Parenting Gets Easier, Right? with Taylor and Heidi Calmus

Would you rather potty train a toddler or teach a teen to drive? This week we have Dude Dad's Taylor and Heidi Calmus on the podcast to talk all about our different seasons of parenting. We discuss how we first met each other, what it was like to create content in a pandemic, as well as their new TV show Super Dad on Magnolia Network. (Yes, Magnolia like Chip and Joanna Gaines...) Penn also tells more than one poop story... we apologize in advance.

You can find more hilarious videos from Taylor and Heidi here: https://www.dudedad.com/ as well as watch their new show here: https://magnolia.com/watch/show/c3dc8b62-f029-5237-904d-283cf1529f6a/super-dad/

Let?s be real, middle school was (all-caps) AWKWARD. Between the braces (and for me, a bad perm) and hormones, it?s a wonder we survived. Michelle Icard has made it her life?s work to help kids through these awkward years. Bless.

Her new book, Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen guides readers through the fourteen essential conversations parents need to have with their kids before they start high school. Also - her first book, Middle School Makeover: Improving the Way You and Your Child Experience the Middle School Years, is a primer for the social and emotional changes parents and kids navigate as they get older.

9 Questions For Your Partner

In the past year we've spent more time together than ever before, so why does it feel like we haven?t had as many good conversations? You know I love a list, so I wrote these questions for an after-dinner discussion launching point.

Penn and I decided to bring the discussion to our podcast and we learned a little about each other (which is a big deal because we?ve known each other for almost 18 years.) Here is a link to the 9 questions we asked each other: https://theholdernessfamily.com/9-questions-to-ask-your-partner-in-2021/

Where Comedy Comes From with Charlie Berens

Everyone has one of those friends who has you in stitches every time they open their mouth. For us, that guy is comedian and author, Charlie Berens. (He is also a journalist turned online content creator, kind of like us!)

We ask Charlie where he gets that comedic gift. Turns out, it?s not about sitting around dreaming up jokes; it?s more about paying attention to the world around you. As one of 12 kids, he got plenty of comedic material... bless his parents. His new book, The Midwest Survival Guide, is available for pre-order now and you can get dates for his upcoming comedy tour here

Crossing The Finish Line

The end of the school year is finally here, and I feel like we are crossing the finish line being held together with tape and glue. Last August, I wrote a blog post about what I hoped my kids would learn this school year.

This week on the podcast, we revisited these goals for our kids and we asked our audience to tell us what non-academic lessons their kids took with them.

Working on Being A Better Ally

On this episode, we sit down with Donald Thompson and Jackie Ferguson of The Diversity Movement to have a conversation about race and how to be better allies in the wake of George Floyd. Donald Thompson is a friend and CEO of WalkWest. He serves on boards for several organizations in the fields of technology, marketing, sports and entertainment and is a mentor for Black Founders Google for Entrepreneurs Exchange. Jackie Ferguson is Director, Multicultural Programming at WalkWest and lead course writer for Diversity: Beyond the Checkbox. You can learn more at https://thediversitymovement.com/

The Diversity Movement has put together lots of resources, books for children, our offers and upcoming events that promote allyship and make us all stronger together. You can also purchase their module on Unconscious Bias for only $19 with 100% of the proceeds will go to North Carolina organizations that support, educate and empower underserved and marginalized communities in our fight for equality. Learn more: https://thediversitymovement.com/what-can-i-do/

Here are some of the ways I discussed how I am starting to become a better ally on the podcast as well:

1) Broaden your social media feed to more creators of color. Some Instagram users that I follow are @rachel.cargle, @theconsciouskid, @AustinChanning, and @LatashaMorrison.

2) Google whether your local police department outfits all on-duty officers with body worn cameras and requires them to be turned on when answering a call. If they don?t, write to your city government and advocate for it.

3) Read, learn, and get involved. You can get involved with Be The Bridge, Showing Up for Racial Justice, or Center for Racial Justice. I'm reading White Fragility and I'm Still Here about racial inequality. There are also good books for kids to begin the conversation: https://bookriot.com/2018/09/19/childrens-books-about-diversity/amp/

Disclaimer: While this is the most important podcast we?ve ever done, it is about preventing the sexual predation of minors online. We recommend listening first before deciding what you want to share with your kids. Penn and I talk to my friend Roo Powell about her experience as a 37-year-old posing as an 11-year-old girl on social media. Her work has been featured on GMA and Nightline. She is truly a superhero.
