Every year on the podcast we do a round-up of our favorite moments, but this year we decided to do something a little different. This week we kick off a two-part series "behind the music" with Ann Marie Taepke and Sam Allen, our two of our integral team members. We had so much fun in this podcast, it had to be two parts. In Part One, we share our favorite videos and the stories behind creating them. We talk about why Kim loved breaking the rules, the fun police, and how being unhinged made this year fun. We will release Part Two on December 24, 2024 before taking two weeks off for the holiday. Listen and tell us what your favorite videos/moments were!

Sometimes I can feel like I can conquer the world, and sometimes I don't want to get out of bed. 93% of time management and productivity books are written by men. (By the way, I love men but women are built different!) There are so many more nuances to women who are looking for help prioritizing and planning. So this week, we have a ladies-only episode where I interview Kendra Adachi, also know as "the Lazy Genius." Kendra is a 3-time New York Times bestselling author, nationally ranked podcaster, wife, and mom. Her latest book is called The Plan: Manage Your Time like a Lazy Genius. Listen to her give us advice on how to get stuff done that matters without turning into a tired robot. You can learn more about Kendra here: https://www.thelazygeniuscollective.com/.

Last month on the podcast, we played a bunch of Hallmark movie games in our Christmas Will Fix It episode. Penn and I had so much fun that we asked ourselves... should we talk to an actual Hallmark movie writer? Enter Julie Sherman Wolfe! Julie is an award-winning writer and producer who has written 26 MOVIES for Hallmark, including her most recent Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story. We had the best time talking to her about her background, the Hallmark movie making process, and (gasp) the fact she also has ADHD!
Hear us play another Hallmark movie game with Julie as well as pitch who we would play if she wrote us into her next flick. You can follow Julie on Instagram at @julie_sherman_wolfe. Are you a proud Hallmark movie watcher?

Everyone is about to have Thanksgiving with friends and family, some who may have very different political views than they do. It used to be that you could find something to agree on with those of another political party. Data shows that the political polarization in our country is worst now than ever. How did we get here? How do we fix it? This week we invited data scientist, research consultant, and keynote speaker, Andrea Jones-Rooy, Ph.D. on the show to discuss (she's a stand-up comedian and circus performer too - fun fact!)
We talk about the role the media plays in our division, why disagreement is good for solutions, and we circle back often to the water damage issue currently happening at our house. You can learn more about Dr. Jones-Rooy here: https://www.jonesrooy.com/. Happy turkey day :)

We experienced our first "last" recently with having a senior in high school. That coupled with some stressful weeks had me living by airport rules. What are airport rules? I am so glad you asked. This week on the podcast, we give life updates and discuss airport rules (and why they should be temporary - like being in an airport.) Penn also shares his top 5 best and worst things at an airport... and it gets personal.

Throughout my life (especially during COVID) I have learned that when life gets heavy, my defense mechanism is Christmas. Something about burying yourself in holiday cheer makes everything better. It has taken a long time for Penn to understand and embrace my need for Christmas. As soon as Halloween ends, Christmas begins.
This week we invite our producer Ann Marie Taepke onto the show for some laughs. We play some games around Hallmark movies, decide what the best Thanksgiving side is, and Penn tells us his Top 5 underrated Christmas songs. At the end of the day, we hope this podcast makes you smile.

We are releasing this podcast on Election Day 2024, because we need some political therapy. Over the past couple presidential elections, the stakes are feeling higher and higher. I personally don't believe our bodies were made to handle all the constant information and stress in American politics. (Don't you remember when politics used to be boring?) This week we invited back Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers from the top-rated podcast, Pantsuit Politics, to discuss the state of our nation and how we move forward. When Penn and I were on The Amazing Race, they took away our phones, tablets, laptops? anything we could use to access the outside world or the internet. If we had a question, we couldn?t Google it to get the answer like we can now. We had to wonder. I remember when we got back I told everyone I wasn?t going to be on my phone as much as a result. (That lasted probably one week.) Our phones are amazing pieces of technology, but is having so much at our fingertips good for us?
This week, we had Carlos Whittaker to answer this very question. Carlos recently wrote the book, Reconnected: How 7 Screen-Free Weeks with Monks and Amish Farmers Helped Me Recover the Lost Art of Being Human. As an experiment, he spent 7 weeks screen-free doing brain scans before and after. The results and learnings from his book were eye-opening. We talk about tips and tricks to connect more with the world around you as well as some fun encyclopedia facts from Penn! This week is a very special episode to celebrate the fact that... PENN IS 50! Cue Sally O'Malley! (Those of you who are old enough get the reference.) To commemorate the occasion, Penn shares a bunch of lists with me: Things that mean a lot more at 50, thing that mean a lot less at 50, things he is cranky about at 50, and goals for the next 50! (Yay, goals... my favorite!) We also end the episode with some roasts from Taylor Calmus of Dude Dad, Myles Montplaisir of You Betcha, comedian Charlie Berens, and members of our team: Ann Marie, Sam, and Desmond.
You make 50 look good, Penn! Here's to the next half century!

The last two weeks have been a lot in the Holderness house. First, Hurricane Helene has devastated the western part of North Carolina, where some of Penn's family still lives. So many people lost their lives and whole towns were wiped out. Before we could even wrap our minds around it, Hurricane Milton was barreling towards my hometown in Florida. Enter an ill-timed panic attack. This week we talk about how to have grace for someone living with anxiety, what professions we would have been if we followed our elementary school passions, and most importantly, we talk to Ethan Clark.
Ethan Clark is a 21-year old college student and founder of North Carolina?s Weather Authority. He gained national attention for sharing real-time weather information during Hurricane Helene. Ethan has been running the NC Weather Authority since the 7th grade. He has over 600,000 followers and he has not missed a day of posting since 2016. He is an inspiration to Penn and I - we were so happy to have him on the show. You can learn more about Ethan here: https://www.ncwxauthority.com/. If you're looking to donate to western NC, check out our blog post.

Earlier this year, we were invited to join Jason Alexander and Peter Tilden on their podcast ?Really, No Really? to promote our new book, ADHD Is Awesome. It was an amazing experience, and the whole time I was in awe of their friendship. Jason and Peter have been best friends for decades, and it's apparent that they admire and care about each other deeply. So we invited them on the show to talk about the secret to building strong male friendships.
Penn and I fall into gender stereotypes when it comes to friendships. I go deep quick with fewer friends, and Penn has more surface-level friendships with a lot of people. We talk to Jason and Peter about how they met, Seinfeld stories, and advice anyone can use to build deeper connection. We also have a special mailbag from Charlie Berens, Myles Montplaisir, and Taylor Calmus? The Husbands of Target! Penn asked each of them what the secret to male friendship was during a recent visit.

When we wrote our book, ADHD Is Awesome, one of the areas we wanted to cover more was the under-diagnosis of ADHD amongst minority populations. White children get diagnosed with ADHD at a rate of 11.5% while Black children get diagnosed at a rate of 8.9%. Additionally, studies have shown that Black children with symptoms of ADHD are treated more negatively by teachers and other adults. This week, we talk to Dr. Damon Tweedy, a professor of psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine (and our friend) to learn more.
Dr. Tweedy is the author of two books, Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine and Facing the Unseen: The Struggle to Center Mental Health in Medicine. His first book made the New York Times bestseller list and was selected by TIME Magazine as a top non-fiction book that year. Dr. Tweedy has been featured in publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and Discover Magazine. We discuss Dr. Tweedy's personal stories about probably having ADHD himself along with the complicated issue of what it means to be Black and have ADHD. You can learn more about Dr. Tweedy here: https://www.damontweedy.com/.

It's been a while since we've done a Q&A podcast. The world is very serious right now and while it is important to engage in that seriousness, sometimes you need a diversion. So this is some cotton candy for your brain, and a big thank you to everyone who sent in questions for the show. We answer personal questions, questions around The Amazing Race, and some just for fun! Stick around for a special Top 5 from our producer, Ann Marie, and the most unhinged close to a podcast ever. (Sorry for all the butt stuff.)

Penn and I have had a lot of funny moments in our marriage that are signposts we are getting older. (Personally I feel like I've been "middle-aged" since age 12...) So we decided to ask YOU to help complete the sentence: "You know you're middle-aged when..." and you did not disappoint. The most middle-aged thing to happen during the making of this podcast? Penn having a back issue so bad he had to join us horizontally from our very firm IKEA couch. (You know you're almost 50 when...)
Are you middle-aged like us? Tell us what we missed and thank you again for contributing to our podcast this week. You truly made us laugh.

Over the last couple of years, the political climate has gotten contentious. That sentiment has caused people to shy away from discussing politics and government with their children. Despite that, teens still think it?s important to follow current events, politics included. A recent survey of teens aged 13?17 found that 1/3 of respondents relied on their parents, family members, or teachers for information. We need to do the work to help guide them and make them feel safe talking to us.
This week, we brought in Lindsey Cormack - an associate professor of Political Science and Director of the Diplomacy Lab. Her latest book, How to Raise a Citizen & Why it?s Up to You to Do It, aims to reinvigorate multigenerational political discussion and governmental know-how. We talk about what to keep in mind when listening to teens? views on issues and 5 things teens must do before they fully participate in politics. (Don't forget about being more informed in your local and state government too!) Stay tuned until the end where we also discuss our Top 5 craziest laws.

Recently, I?ve been craving a project. With Lola starting her senior year of high school, I feel like maybe this craving is just a distraction (but, still a craving nonetheless!) There?s something about losing myself in organizing a closet that is therapeutic. So this week, we bring our favorite organizational friends, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin of The Home Edit, on our podcast. Clea and Joanna have two new books out now. They have a children?s book and a teen book both about organization, so we thought we would get a few tips!
The biggest thing you can do to start getting your teen or kid more organized is editing their space so they are invested in all the items they have. If they have a lot of junk they aren?t invested in, it?s harder to keep a space tidy. Clea and Joanna give us more tips about keeping spaces clean, and we entertain them with the Top 5 things Penn has found in his car. (Buckle up, this one gets weird!) You can learn more about their books here.

Somehow, Penn and I will have been married for 20 years next year (what?!) It's an incredible feat, but with experiencing such a busy season of parenting, I can see how couples fall out of "like" with each other. This week, we give each of our own Top 5 tips on how to stay in like. Our producer, Ann Marie Taepke, also joins to play a fun game we call "Then" where we (you guessed it) get way too competitive. Very important: Tell us whether you think a Frosty is a milkshake or not and if Penn looks like Bob Barker in the aging booth app.

I am having mixed feelings about having a kid going into her senior year of high school. The biggest feeling I have is excitement for her - closing one chapter and about to open the next. But big changes bring big feelings. This week, Penn and I talk about my senior year goals and your best advice (thank you for writing in on Instagram and leaving us voicemails!) Additionally, Penn comes up with four Top 5 Lists about senior year songs, movies, and a few others that made us giggle. (Don't forget to send us your 4 things!)

Penn has never been prouder of Team USA than this Olympics. He has watched every Olympics Games since 1984 and he watches everything ? racewalking, speed climbing, archery, you name it. He says that regardless of medals, Paris 2024 is the best that Team USA has ever been. These kids (I?ll say kids, because most are young enough to be my children) have been extraordinary role models for our country.
Today we talk about five life lessons we've learned from Team USA that can apply to anyone. We also discuss the top 5 non-Olympic "sports" I would medal in and we take a mailbag question about Penn's table tennis skills (or lack thereof.) You can send us a mailbag question and we may answer it on a future podcast! Email [email protected].

When life turns out differently, it?s all about how you perceive it. For our friend, Raquel Moore (who you may remember from our season of The Amazing Race) life has turned out very differently than she expected. She never thought she?d meet the love of her life. She never thought she?d live in the suburbs of Cleveland. She never thought she?d be a mother to a wonderful little boy, Nico, who has a rare genetic disorder called FOXG1 Syndrome. We asked Raquel to come on the show to talk more about a recent post she made on Instagram. In the post, she gave advice to parents with special needs children. (Advice that I think can apply to all parents and life in general.)
Penn, Raquel, and I talk more about her outlook on this journey as well as our time together on The Amazing Race. (We are so lucky to have a friend like Raquel in our lives.) FOXG1 is still being researched and studied to find a cure. If you feel compelled to donate, you can do so with the FOXG1 Research Foundation. You can learn more about Raquel's mindset & accountability coaching business, where she also helps parents who have children with special needs here: https://www.theraquelmoore.com/

The 2024 Olympics have started! Today, we talk to our friend, Olympic Silver Medalist, and a U.S. pole vault record holder, Sandi Morris. Sandi barely missed going to the games in Paris this year (she placed 4th in qualifying) but she isn't letting that stop her. She offers words of encouragement on how to keep going and stay positive when you're doing something you love. (We're in awe of her mental and physical toughness.) You can learn more about Sandi and her journey here: https://www.sandimorrispv.com/.
Fun Fact: Sandi and her husband and three-time Olympian, Tyrone Smith, joined us for our 2020 Fauxlympics in the pandemic, and Sandi helped critique Penn's Pole Vault in our 2022 Penn Vs. Olympics.

Every now and then, there are times when I really just need to laugh. The world can feel so heavy, it?s nice to have an escape from time to time. On this week?s show, we play the game Wrong Answers Only with our producer, Ann Marie Taepke. In the game, we are given a piece of obscure trivia and we have to give the wrong answer on purpose. What transpired were a ton of laughs and some knowledge that will probably help us the next time we watch Jeopardy. Also, learn about our secret mission with Project Noodle! You have to listen to the full show to know your assignment :)

As someone who has said one of their family?s values is resilience, I have a hard time with seeing my kids quit something. If something isn?t serving me or isn?t something I am interested in, I have no problem saying no. (This took years to master, by the way.) So why do I have a problem with my kids wanting to quit something?
This week, we invited our dear friend and parenting coach, Dr. Hope Seidel, on the podcast to talk about quitting. To start off the discussion, she mentioned that technically she quit being a pediatrician to follow her calling as a parenting coach. She likes to joke that she retired from being a pediatrician, because retiring is just a fancy way to say you quit something and have it be more acceptable. (So true.) Dr. Hope Seidel talked to us about how to reframe ending something and to value our children?s character over accomplishments. Listen to the show and tell us about a time you ?retired? from something.

Penn here. The other day I drove home from rural North Carolina after yet another youth basketball tournament. There are moments I question my sanity for agreeing to coach my son?s basketball team. It?s a time and energy commitment that can be draining. But there?s something else too. Coaching his team has taught me a great deal and I believe has made me a better parent. Kim and I discuss the lessons that I?ve learned in this week?s podcast and how they translate to parenting in general. After all of the countless practices, tournaments and road trips are said and done after PC ?retires? from youth sports?I truly hope what I have taught him and the rest of these boys is something of value to them. Because what they?ve taught me? Priceless.

Hoping you all are enjoying your summer so far. Happy to say that Penn and I are currently in full-on summer mode. After a very busy spring with our book tour, we?ve been lucky enough to squeeze in some beach time in between work, sports, camps, and college prep for Lola. Penn Charles capped off his busy spring with a celebration for graduating from 8th grade.
PC was quick to remind us that this was ?no big deal,? but we were excited to celebrate him. This sparked a conversation between Penn and me about what other milestones in your children?s lives warrant a celebration (which was also a great walk down memory lane.) Should we throw a parade the last time you have to wipe a butt?

Emotions are hard. Teen emotions are VERY hard. We brought in one of our favorite people to talk to us about the new Pixar movie, Inside Out 2. For the past four years, Dr. Lisa Damour has worked with the writers as they explore how becoming a teenager changes Riley?s emotional world. The author of three New York Times bestsellers, she helps highlight some of the uncomfortable emotions that are part of our everyday lives.

I have fond memories of riding bikes and walking around the mall, with my biggest worry being how to avoid the intense southern heat. Fast forward to today, my 17-year-old daughter?s summer is planned out to the minute. Between college applications, tennis, and being a normal social teenager, her schedule is could be compared to a complex military operation. It made me start to think about how summer experiences have changed since I was a kid, but also since becoming a mom of littles vs teens as well.
We dive into all of that in this week?s podcast, as well as venturing into the absurdity of women's swimsuits and how the song "Summer of 69" by Bryan Adams has ruined me. What are your summer plans?? Comment below and happy listening!

Penn and I do lots of things together. We work together, we live together, we travel together, and now we? dream together? (No, like literally the same dream. What do dreams mean?!) On this week?s podcast, we brought in expert dream analyst Jane Teresa Anderson to see if she could unravel that dream for us (and she also unraveled some of yours from those who called in!)
Jane Teresa defines dreams as: ?The experience that you have when your brain and your mind are processing the last one to two days of all your conscious experiences and your unconscious experiences trying to make sense of the world.? Our conversation was fascinating and something I hope you all enjoy too! What are recurring dreams that you?ve had and what do dreams mean to you?

What a journey this past month has been. Kim and I finished up our final book tour appearance last week in Minneapolis - and we loved meeting all of you! ADHD Is Awesome is research-based and we interviewed many doctors, psychologists, and psychiatrists to get as broad a perspective as possible. But in the end, it's written from my perspective. When I look back at the process of writing this book, I wish I'd had the opportunity to talk more about other perspectives than my own. In particular, the perspective of the under-diagnosed woman with ADHD and minorities.
In this week?s podcast, we got a chance to speak with Amy Marie Hann, a mother of 3 children with ADHD. Amy herself was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. Her father and sister are also ADHD, as is her husband. Needless to say, ADHD has permeated every corner of her life. It was incredibly enlightening to talk to her about her own journey and how she has adapted her routines in order to not only keep her own ADHD in check, but also be able to be present and effective in raising her children. You can learn more about Amy Marie here: https://www.amymariehann.com/

Recently, I went back to therapy. Penn says has already seen a difference in me and I can feel it too. I'm a big fan of therapy and have been in and out of it, for whatever reason, my entire adult life. Doing the work (plus being encouraged by my doctor to go on a pediatric-sized dose of medication) has made the world a little brighter and easier for me to navigate. It goes without saying that therapy and medication are very personal decisions, but I want to be transparent and set an example for my kids so that they?re aware of the resources available to them.
Many of you who have followed us for awhile know that I?ve been talking about getting a hobby for YEARS. (My hobby is talking about getting a hobby.) So, I asked all of you what hobbies you do! And friends, did you ever deliver with some unique ideas. From photography to composting to beekeeping, there were so many great and different suggestions, so thank you. On this week?s podcast we react to some of those suggestions, discuss why hobbies are a good idea, and talk about us being quoted in People Magazine. (Let's set the record straight, BORGs are bad!)

First off, let me say that we are humbled and grateful for you all and the support of our book, ADHD Is Awesome. For the past few weeks, we?ve met so many of you on our book tour and I can?t tell you how incredibly emotional it?s been for us. (I?m a big ball of mush right now.) In this week?s podcast, we reflect on our first two legs of the book tour, what we did after finding out about making the NYT Bestsellers list, a really fun star sighting on an elliptical machine, and which celebrity couples that we would like to go on vacation with. (Hint: You have to pick people you?d be comfortable enough to fart in front of. This is key.)
In all seriousness, we are deeply grateful for you, and have loved all of the stories, laughs, tears, and awkward hugs. Thank you all for being awesome.

My mother (who I love and adore) moved to town in January to be closer to our family. It?s been wonderful to be able to call her up to see if she wants to go to dinner on a random Wednesday. So last week, I did just that. Her response? ?I have to check my calendar.? Wait, what? As she thumbed through her calendar looking for a free night, I started to think to myself ?am I failing at friendship??
I?m exaggerating, because I do have deep friendships and very dear friends here. It?s just that life is busy and my introverted self is more comfortable at home on a Friday night in my pajamas than going to meet up with a friend. My husband, on the other hand, is very quick to go play tennis or grab a beer whenever he gets the opportunity. This week, we got curious about friendship with author, life coach, and friendship expert, Shari Leid. We explored why women form deeper friendships than men and if we are living in a friendship recession. It was a discussion that made us realize not only how we, as men and women, often define friendship in different ways, but also gave us a chance to see what we can learn from each other in terms of being a better friend.

As I write this, we are celebrating 19 years of pure, wedded bliss (do you hear the sarcasm?) NINETEEN YEARS. Our marriage is a freshman in college. Our marriage probably has a fake ID and makes bad decisions in bars. But on the balance, I will say I feel incredibly lucky. We have a really great marriage. This week we discuss our best marriage tips... including why Penn doesn't poop in our hotel room. (Yes, he's all mine ladies.)
We also reflect on Lola going to prom and parenting advice for when they go away to college. What's the best marriage advice you have or tips for your kids going away to college? Share them with us! Learn more about our games here and our book here. Thanks for being part of this journey with us, friends.

If you are listening to this on April 30th - the day this podcast came out - our new book, ADHD Is Awesome is out today! About five years ago, we started making ADHD content and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. (Spoiler alert: Your encouragement was a big motivator for us writing this book!) The biggest question we've gotten while writing this was: Will there be an audiobook? Well, today is your lucky day - this podcast includes a preview of our book's Introduction and Chapter 1. We're so happy this book is out in the world. If you get it, we hope you love it as much as we loved making it.
If you want to come give us a hug on our ADHD Is Awesome book tour, check the dates here: https://theholdernessfamily.com/adhd-is-awesome/#tour

Yay, you made it to the end (and a HUGE thank you for listening!) This is Part 3 of our 3-part ADHD Is Awesome bonus series. This podcast series is inspired by our new book ADHD Is Awesome which comes out April 30, 2024. In this series, we plan to answer three big questions: 1) What does ADHD look like, 2) How do you best partner with someone who has ADHD, and 3) What do you do with your ADHD to (mostly) thrive.
This week, we have Dr. Norrine Russell join us to talk about tips and tricks on how we can do better when we have ADHD. We also have my son, Penn Charles, who also has ADHD, join us to talk about what tips and tricks he uses! If you haven't heard part 2 of this series, you can listen to it here: ADHD Is Awesome: How To Help (Part 2)

Hi friends, Penn here. As some of you know, I am obsessed with all things sci-fi. This traces way back to my childhood during the Star Wars and Star Trek days that sparked a lifelong fascination for all things space. It?s the main reason that I always wanted to be an astronaut. Fast forward to today, you can see that life took me in a wildly different direction. (Plus I have terrible vertigo so I would have made a horrible astronaut.) Dashed childhood dreams aside, the impact these movies and shows had on me got us thinking.
Turns out, the stuff we consume has a greater impact than you think. Walt Hickey wrote a fascinating book called You Are What You Watch: How Movies and TV Affect Everything that discusses just that. In it, Hickey dives into (among many other things) the power of entertainment, how it can have an actual physical effect on us, and how it can greatly shape who we are as individuals and as society. So we invited him on this week?s podcast! Also bonus?after the interview, Kim and I test our 90?s pop culture knowledge with our producer, Ann Marie. (And I remain the champ of Britney Spears knowledge?IYKYK.)

I love discovering new things about people through great conversation. But lately I?ve been thinking about how to avoid the pitfalls of asking a question that might make the other person feel uncomfortable or awkward. One of the reasons for that self-reflection is the fact that we have a junior in high school and previously, if I met up with one of her friends, I'd ask, ?Where are you thinking about going to college?? I had no idea how much stress just that simple question creates. (I wrote a blog about it here!)
So this week, we asked you to send us your worst and best questions to make us laugh and help us get better! From what NOT to ask a pregnant woman to ?what is the first movie that comes to mind when you think of Tim Curry?? Penn and I picked out some of our favorites to share with you on this week?s podcast. What's the best question you've ever been asked?

Most of you that have followed us for a while know I?m an anxious person. You know one thing that bizarrely doesn?t scare me? Artificial intelligence taking over the world. There's a lot of hills I'm gonna die on. But if there's a zombie apocalypse triggered by AI? Take me first, alien overlords. Penn is extremely worried about artificial intelligence and what could happen if it gets in the wrong hands. So we invited Dr. Helen Crompton, a professor at Old Dominion University and the Executive Director of the Research Institute for Digital Innovation in Learning at ODUGlobal, on this week?s podcast to educate us.
Artificial intelligence will continue to evolve in extraordinary ways, but I now have more tools to protect myself and my family against those who are using it for harmful means. How do you feel about AI? You can find more about what we discussed below:

If you had a button to get rid of your ADHD or someone else?s, would you press it? The perception society has around Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is pretty negative. You would find it hard to believe there are benefits to something that has three unfavorable words as part of its name. I would rename ADHD in a heartbeat if I could. In our book, ADHD Is Awesome, we talk about alternate names we would use or others have come up with. But no matter what we were to rename ADHD, we need to reframe it.
This week we talk about changing the perception of ADHD, including the reframing name, traits associated with it, and even your own thinking about your ADHD. Listen to the show and let us know if you had a button to get rid of your ADHD or someone else?s, would you press it? I know I wouldn?t. I am grateful for my ADHD because my ADHD makes me who I am.

I heard of schadenfreude for the first time while sitting in the audience of the hilariously wonderful Broadway show Avenue Q. It means pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune. But if schadenfreude is taking pleasure in someone?s misfortune, can you take pleasure in someone?s joy? Enter freudenfreude.
On this week?s podcast, we had Dr. Catherine Chambliss teach us how to practice more freudenfreude. Dr. Chambliss shared some of the benefits of freudenfreude and easy practices to include it in our lives (like even if you aren?t feeling that joyous about someone else?s success?fake it! Acting out emotions can help jumpstart those feelings in your system.) Tell us if you have any achievements or fun things that have happened to you lately - we will hype you up! Promise.

I have a solid marriage, a great one actually, but most nights I look over to my husband, who falls blissfully asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow, and I?m filled with RAGE. How does he fall asleep so quickly?!? How does his body let him STAY asleep?! Apparently, sleep disruption like I am experiencing is one of the many (many) symptoms of perimenopause. But sometimes, I feel like it?s something *I* have done wrong, something *I* must be doing right. As if it?s all in my head. I?m writing to tell you, it?s not.
This week, we invited Dr. Mary Claire Haver on the podcast to discuss all things menopause. I was able to read an advance copy of her new book, The New Menopause: Navigating Your Path Through Hormonal Change with Purpose, Power, and Facts. (It will be released the same day as our book!) Her book focuses on everything a woman needs to know to thrive during her hormonal transition and to help her take charge of her health. In our podcast we talk about symptoms, how partners can be supportive, and actionable things you can do to help lessen the craziness. Are you going through perimenopause or menopause?

Penn here! This week, we recorded a live podcast at SXSW in Austin, Texas about how to (mostly) thrive with ADHD. We talk about how the world wasn?t built for ADHD and what systems I?ve put in place to make life more manageable. My hope is that we can find more understanding for those of us with different, but wonderful brains. If you have ADHD, how would you change your school or workplace to be more ADHD friendly? Big thanks to everyone who attended, we are so excited to get our new book out into the universe. You can pre-order it now: Our New Book, ADHD Is Awesome!

Recently, we had the privilege of going on family vacation in the Caribbean and one of the activities we planned was snorkeling. He was particularly excited about seeing the ?nerf shark.? (Yes, he said nerf shark instead of nurse shark.) Penn is very smart. He?s one of those annoying people who took the SAT and got an amazing score the first time. So, I cannot tell you how happy it made me that he thought a nurse shark was called a nerf shark. Easily my top moment on vacation.
This story led us to talking about the other things we?ve gotten loud wrong in our lives this week on our podcast.

We have very fun (but weird) jobs where we have to always be producing something. Small business owners know that you have to hustle in order to make a living. Your success (or failure) is a direct correlation of your work. And it?s a lot of pressure. This week on our podcast, we interviewed Celeste Headlee, author of Do Nothing: How To Break Away From Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving.
I have to admit some of her advice about slowing down did not seem like it could work for small business owners like Penn and I. It was refreshing to hear even Celeste (who is self-employed) didn?t believe that slowing down could lead to the same, if not more success. Celeste gave us great advice to help me break my busy addiction. Do you have a hard time slowing down?

I am pretty sure I didn?t do ?gentle parenting? with my kids. To be clear, Penn and I don?t really have to discipline our children. They are wonderful kids and on their way to be amazing adults. But when they were toddlers having a tantrum, I can?t say that I was gentle. But should I be? Is it too late to change my parenting? Enter our dear friend, Dr. Hope Seidel, a parenting coach and pediatrician. When I posed this question to Dr. Hope, she responded: ?Why do you think you need to change, Kim? Because a book told you so??
This is why I need Dr. Hope in my life and why I am so glad she joined our podcast discussion this week. She reminded us that it?s important to ask yourself: What am I hoping my kids will be, and am I creating a home that promotes that vision? There was a time when we?d have a reservation at a cozy restaurant to celebrate Valentine?s Day. Things are different now, but not ?bad? different. I don?t love my husband any less. In fact, there?s no way I could love him more, but we are not in our date night era. So this week, our producer Ann Marie Taepke (she also plays our Midwest Neighbor in videos) joins us! When you've been together for a long time, it's hard to find new things to talk about. Ann Marie brought us 10 wacky questions to make us laugh and learn more about each other. (Please message us and tell us what song you would sing to save the world!)
You can get a copy of the questions we ask on the show here: https://theholdernessfamily.com/10-wacky-questions-for-your-valentine/

Last week, we put out a fun video about Taylor Swift and the Super Bowl. It went viral and for the most part people loved it. But some of the comments got us talking enough to feel like we needed to do a podcast on it. Over the past couple months, Taylor Swift has received criticism for supporting her boyfriend Travis Kelce in his career. Some of the recent claims about her are misogynistic and awful. Would anyone say these things if an internationally famous male musician was supporting his female girlfriend? No. (In fact, he would probably be praised.)
This week we unpack with our friend Carlos Whitaker. He?s a self-proclaimed ?hope dealer? who has found a way to bring people together, people of different political parties, races, religions, to have really hard conversations. Carlos Whittaker is an author, speaker, and storyteller who is bringing hope to humans all over the world. What I love is his saying: "I don?t stand with issues, I walk with people."
