'Sugar' by Maroon 5 (w/ Ena Da)

Evan & Andrew are joined by Ena Da to discuss the detestable but also detestably catchy song Sugar. There are just so many problems. Not least, how do we understand "sugar" and "red velvet" in light of recent illuminations of Adam Levine's idea of romance? More fundamentally, is Maroon 5 even still a band? Or just five guys cosplaying as a rock band while they sing along to Mike Posner studio tracks? And why are they giving themselves out as wedding presents to unsuspecting Los Angelenos?

'One Headlight' by The Wallflowers

Nepotism babies are so hot right now! But have they?always been?!? Evan & Andrew discuss the hottest nepotism baby of the 90s outside of Socks Clinton, Evan desperately and fruitlessly attempts to get Andrew to stop talking about Bob Dylan and start talking about  ?J?a?k?o?b? ?D?y?l?a?n?  The Wallflowers instead. But the sonorous tones of the organ on ?One Headlight? keeps drawing Andrew back to Dylan the elder like moth to a flame. Andrew resorts to the only revenge available to him in this format, which is the most brutal $5 segment that has ever been recorded on our podcast.

'Long December' by Counting Crows (w/ Pat Cassels)

How long is it? Every single kid knows exactly how many days are left until Christmas, every harried mom and dad knows how few shopping days are left until the 25th, yet Adam Duritz and The Counting Crows are out here acting like Einsteinian physics applies to the Gregorian Calendar. Can our intrepid and unabashedly festive hosts take the most heartbreaking song in the advent oeuvre and turn it into something that will go on your family's Christmas Eve playlist? Seems impossible!

'You're Still The One' by Shania Twain (w/ Jiji Lee)

Ever thought about how making a billion dollars would ruin your life? Maybe you pondered a lot of options (revolutionary coup, botched CoolSculpting, basic bitch drug cartel kidnapping), but you MIGHT have missed an obvious one if you haven?t read all the People mag listicles about Shania Twain?s divorce-slash-husband-swap! Long story short, do NOT hire someone to be your best friend and then leave them alone in a palatial Swiss chalet with your superproducer husband while you go on tour. Evan, Andrew, and friend of the pod Jiji Lee discuss how Shania and Mutt Lange?s ballad remains the most perfect ballad of all time even after their gruesome divorce, and also how paradoxically it could be improved by leaning into Shania?s sheer fury over being spurned, with an added bonus of it being very hard to extradite criminals from Switzerland.

'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' by Green Day (w/ Joanna Hausmann)

Have you ever felt like you were the only lonely person walking down a boulevard? Well we've got news for you. You're not alone. 90% of all humans have felt like they're the only one who can understand themselves before their brain finishes developing at age 25. Evan, Andrew, and Joanna Hausmann dive in to what makes Green Day the perfect band for the adolescent mind, why Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the musical equivalent of dogs playing poker, and if Green Day have sold out or not.

'Eye of The Tiger' by Survivor (w/ Arthur Meyer)

Is it rude to name your band after an event in which your friends and colleagues died? Is it rude to fire your lead singer immediately after he shreds his vocal chords singing the biggest hit of the 1980s? Well, apparently you don't care about this sort of stuff if you're a true SURVIVOR, because you've got THE EYE OF THE TIGER! Evan and Andrew welcome back Arthur Meyer to Punch Up The Jam, who comes ready not only with a pitch-ready idea for the punch up, but with the dumbest yet most impressive party trick that Evan and Andrew have ever seen! But our intrepid hosts have an ace up their sleeve to shock their guest before the Punch is truly Punched!

'Replay' by Iyaz (w/ Phil Jamesson)

Can a song be TOO catchy? Can a song be improved by making it WORSE, unlike what we do every other week, which is making every song better? Can a song be so good that it drags its singer into a black-holey whirlpool of one-hit-wonderdom? Well, the answer to all of these questions is YES, specifically because of Iyaz?s 2009 banger ?Replay.? Evan, Andrew, & Phil Jamesson brainstorm ways to improve it simply by making it worse while also shop talking about YouTube, the Ocean State Job Lot, Waldenbooks, and whether pirating Independence Day could land you in jail.

'Lovely Day' by Bill Withers (w/ Michael Gregory)

Andrew, Evan, and nearly genetically identical guest Michael, discuss a dimension of our multiverse in which Bill Withers became a billionaire by having all his songs recorded by Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson instead of singing them himself. But then they come to the immediate conclusion that that alternate universe is an entirely worse place for it, because we don?t have the privilege of hearing Bill Withers? beautiful everyman voice, and also being a billionaire doesn?t even make Bill happy. The brothers compete to see which one of them is closest to breaking the current world record for singing the longest note, argue about how out of tune ?Lovely Day? is, and after Michael surprises our hosts with a surprise bonus Punch Up, laugh until they cry.

Guest: Michael Gregory.

Hustlers? Richard Nixon?!? Had this guy even BEEN to America?!? Along the way, our hosts reminisce about their viral collaboration ?It?s Corn,? Bruce Springsteen plagiarism, whether cocaine can make you a fascist*, and, for no discernible reason, revisit Andrew?s worst opinion.

'Goodbye Earl' by The Chicks

A red-eye flight?!?! FROM Atlanta?!?! Well those travel...EAST! Evan & Andrew wax philosophical about why The Chicks' "Goodbye Earl" demonstrably takes place in France, whether they love music too much or hate music too much, and the dumbest arguments they've ever had about songwriting during their last audio-only episode before Punch Up The Jam's big move to audio AND video next week! Andrew calls his shot early for the Punch Up and performs our intrepid hosts' first ever LIVE Punch Up. Along the way they blaze through some corrections and look back at the most romantic moment ever inspired by Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums List.

'Rude' by MAGIC! (w/ Wolves of Glendale)

If you learn one thing from this song, it's that when anything goes wrong in your life, you simply must accuse others of being rude. How RUDE! You asked me to put a shirt on in the DMV?? Rude!! This is a huge hit that is completely upside down in its assessment of who exactly is being rude. Evan & Andrew are assisted in uprighting this song by prominent manners experts and comedy band The Wolves Of Glendale. An unassailable punch up is delivered. Important side discussions on the bad movie Hider In The House, Sebastian the Crab, and the Dixie Chicks air travel.

'Octopus's Garden' by The Beatles (w/ Reilly Anspaugh)

?I'd like to be?....punching up a song from the Fab Four! A scary prospect! And that's even before you get the tentacles involved. Obviously fans of the pod have been begging for a Beatles punch up for ages and we've just been too intimidated until now, tiptoeing through Lennon & McCartney solo work as prelude. But today WE'VE DONE IT. With the intrepid help of Beatlemaniac and Professional Reviewer Reilly Anspaugh, we got to the bottom of this song and the bottom of the ocean. Extensive non-maritime sidebars on cave geology, Evan's all-too-brief marimba career, and things a squirrel can do to a hollow log.

Guest: Reilly Anspaugh of Headgum's Review Revue

'Shine' by Collective Soul

duh nunu nununu nununu nunu nuh YEAH it's a new ep about this 90s classic! 'Shine' by Collective Soul was a huge hit, but it was only a demo! Don't give up on your dreams kids! Andrew & Evan unearth some surprising arcana about this band's success, but not before they get in some corrections about nudity, review this song's covers by Smashing Pumpkins and Dolly Parton, and imagining fictional covers by Paula Abdul and Bel Biv DeVoe. Andrew gets so sad and self-reflective he threatens to stare into the sunset and damage his retinas! Then Andrew turns it around, rediscovers joy, and punches up the song in a twisted way.

'Everytime We Touch' by Cascada (w/ Annie Rauwerda aka Depths of Wikipedia)

The final boss of this challenge is Annie's confounding opinion that Cascada's 2007 hit "Everytime We Touch" is the "perfect song." This song was slandered as ?The Worst Song of the 80s?. Why?? It rocks! But as Andrew and Evan get way way into, it also sucks in unique and exciting and dumb ways. 'Imagine' by John Lennon (w/ Arthur Meyer)

Imagine a world that is in every possible respect different from our own. Yeah, just give it a whirl. It's easy if you TRY.  ...So says history's biggest imagination bully, John Lennon. We rip off the uplifting latex face mask of this song and bare the dark soul within: this song thinks it's better than you. Our very very prepared guest Arthur Meyer (The Tonight Show, The Onion) has some extremely helpful punch-up suggestions, and helps us roam through discussions of global resource scarcity, Russell Crowe, and the top-secret-but-real Clearchannel "Do Not Play" List!

Guest: Arthur Meyer (here's his album of Beatles covers)

Walk-in music: 'Planets' by Joseph; 'Monkberry Moon Delight' by Linda McCartney and Paul McCartney; 'Another Night' by M.C. Sar and Real McCoy.

'I Get Around' by The Beach Boys (w/ Tim Daniels)

Evan's losing his mind and has Friend of the Pod and Beachboyologist Tim Daniels (The Complete Guide to Everything) in for triage. The Beach Boys: They got around in every way you’re thinking. In the fictional but sort of autobiographical world of this song there’s drag racing, hot promiscuous sex, bragging about fat stacks, and “cool head”, yikes. In the real world there was abuse, fights, drowning, beefing with other bands, not to mention the Manson family stuff. As the Beachies sang, Fun, Fun, FUN!

Guest: Tim Daniels

Walk-in music: 'Taboo' by Caterina Valente; 'Revolution Blues' by Neil Young.

'Bring Me To Life' by Evanescence (w/ Michael Gregory)

The song that launched a million emo kids! Have you ever felt like you can’t wake up? Did you try having a random dude yell CANT WAKE UP at you? Evan, set adrift as a solo host, sorely missing his cohost Andrew (who’s on paternity leave), pulls in the next best thing, his other brother Michael, who proceeds to hit a home run with a stunning GUEST PUNCH. This episode gets to the bottom of what Bring Me To Life is really about: no it’s not the clown from It, but he does come up for some goth reason.

With Ahms Wahd O-PAHNN. Why would we ever want to punch up this beloved song about daddy issues?? Evan and Andrew interrogate YouTube legend Markiplier (Mark Fischbach) about his childhood connection to this sensitive but rockin' tune. Many groundbreaking ideas and questions come to the surface: How NOT to do your album art photoshop, Why does Scott Stapp sing like a muppet, How does Andrew have a certain musical Spidey Sense, Why did Scott Stapp fight another rock band and have an orgy with Kid Rock?

Guest: Markiplier

'Dust in the Wind' by Kansas

All we are is dust in the wind, dude. This crucial insight has been blowing the minds of rock fans for decades. Dust. Wind. Think about it man!! Andrew & Evan get into the nitty-gritty on this classic hit and are shocked, shocked to discover that the band Kansas is actually from Kansas!! And somehow this song is the first thing the singer ever learned to play on the guitar?? They get in a fight about Evan's soundboard abuse, but make up by the end of the episode to make a Very Special Announcement about hosting the podcast.

'Levitating' by Dua Lipa (w/ Connor Ratliff)

It's the hit of the century! It sounds like it's from the 1980s and the 2080s at the same time! Everyone and their pet alien loves this song, and that's why, to punch it up, we knew we had to enlist the help of Connor Ratliff, a legend in the podcastiverse for his dedication to dissecting utter minutiae. And Connor did not disappoint, at one point obsessing over the syllables in a single measure to the point that Evan yelled "YOU HAVE GASLIT YOURSELF!" Our intrepid astronauts veer across the Milky Way and discover connections from Dua Lipa's Levitating to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jon Ossoff, and beer-brewing Trappist monks.

Guest: Connor Ratliff

'Manic Monday' by The Bangles

MONDAYS AMIRITE???? Is the very controversial claim at the heart of this huge 80s hit from the Bangles. Evan and Andrew investigate whether Mondays are really persecuting The Bangles orrrrrr was this song perhaps written by an alien who had just learned about human jobs? No, in fact, it was written by Prince, and this episode reveals that he plagiarized one of his own @%#$ songs when phoning in the writing of this overgrown nursery rhyme. DJs and producers, don’t miss the absolutely sick sample pack of snares that Evan drops at 17:45, completely manic. Historians, don’t miss Andrew’s insights about Mike Myers, Fun Days, and Sex Shooters.

This week’s punch up is exTREMEly useful in your everyday life and if it had its own title other than “Manic Monday Punch Up” it would be “The Consequences Of My Actions” -- get this song and other punch ups on our Patreon: www.patreon.com/gregorybrothers and support the pod!

'The Reason' by Hoobastank (w/ Mano Agapion)

“I’m not a perfect person,” begins this very imperfect song by perfectly named Hoobastank. NO DURR. Mano Agapion (Drag Her, Podcast Killed The Video Star) absolutely hoobed in with some stanky insights, and we can now call this song what it is: abuse. Even more shocking discoveries are made about the SoCal ska scene, Ross from Friends, and Biff from Back to the Future. Andrew brings an eye-opening punch up to the show that changes everything. And the reason is…..you.

Andrew comes to the pod this week with a barnyard axe to grind: Why ain’t there country music for them northerners? Down On The Farm by Tim McGraw proves the PERfect vessel for his punch up which turns out inventing an entirely new subgenre of music!! Evan is both aghast and delighted. Dana Schwartz (Anatomy: A Love Story; Noble Blood) saves the day as official Rhode Island Consultant, and together they figure out a lot about Quahogs, casual country sexism, wine scrotums, and Hollywood nepotism.
