156: Study now, pay later - Austen Allred, CEO and co-founder Lambda School

Austen Allred CEO Austen Allred was inspired to co-found Lambda School after spotting the major disconnect between a labor market in need of specialized talent, and the inaccessibility of training programs designed to fill that gap. His solution is a fully remote tech school with Income Share Agreements; rather than pay the Lambda School for training upfront, students pay a portion of their income after they've graduated and secured a job. Lambda School trains people to be software engineers at no up-front cost. Instead of paying tuition, students agree to pay a percentage of their income after they?re employed, and only if they?re making more than $50k per year. If you don?t find a job, or don?t reach that level of income, you?ll never pay a cent. Austen?s disruptive ideas on the future of education, the labor market disconnect, and the opportunity of providing opportunity at-scale have been featured in: The Harvard Business Review, The Economist, WIRED, Fast Company, TechCrunch, The New York Times, among others. When we embrace our strengths or limitations ? we become better. People are often so afraid they?ll fail at something that they don?t try. Don?t be one of those people. A healthy sense of self-confidence is all about having a balanced view of yourself ? taking pride in your abilities while recognizing your flaws. Confidence can help you to take on the world with more energy and determination, resulting in better relationships, quality work and a feeling of being connected with your surroundings. Have a coach Coaching is still not understood by everyone, and that is entirely normal. It is not a must to have a coach, and yes you can get yourself to a higher potential without a coach also, but with a coach, you will get there quicker, better and most importantly with more confidence. A coach will understand and help you understand the source of the lack of confidence and fear of failure. A coach can give you ideas for ways to improve yourself, but more importantly they can help them become aware of your blind spots. Simply put, a coach will help you stoke your success. It all starts with you. Being open-minded is important because it creates opportunities for you to learn from others. Learning about the way others live or why they believe what they do. Learning does not mean you will change your lifestyle or beliefs, but simply grow in knowledge. Having an open-mind allows you to become aware. It allows you live in a way that's more approachable. The power of surrounding yourself with the right people The people you surround yourself with can either drag you down or lift you up. Take the time to create a circle of people that are the most positive, supportive people you can find. This also means letting go of the people who are pulling you down. If you want to make a positive change in your life, remember, the people around you have a critical influence on your energy, growth and probability of success. Positive people bring out the best in you and make you feel motivated and happy. They help you when you?re in need, encourage you to go after your dreams and are there to celebrate your successes or support you as you move past your challenges. If you want to become your best self I challenge you to review, rethink, and cull through your social media and real life "friends" and find the right people and media content that will actually help you get there. For others, it is just the beginning of something wonderful. Failure isn?t fun, but it is an opportunity to learn, reflect and regroup. Often when you are battling uncertainty, you adapt and change. Sometimes it takes a while but if you can bounce back it can lead to successes that taste all the sweeter. Failure is a natural, necessary part of being human. No one is exempt when it comes to failure. It?s part of life. So don?t quit, use failure to your advantage. Accept the push. Mindset are foundational to your success Success and happiness are all about mindset. I believe our thoughts have incredible power over our everyday lives, and that our moods and behaviors are a reflection of how we think. Change your mindset, change your life. These all sounds so easy, yet many of us tell ourselves it?s too late to change careers or that we don?t have enough time to learn something new. Identify and overcome your personal mental blocks. Create new habits to support your mindset change. Think of your mindset as a voice and manifest all the positivity you could think of. A positive frame of mind will invite success into your life. All it takes is a few simple tweaks to your thinking to become your happiest, most fulfilled self. Syncify An app that lets you be social at a distance. Serious investors who have heard over a thousand pitches and read hundreds of plans are most impressed with founders who make the right points in the shortest amount of time with the least prompting. To be taken seriously by both investors and lenders, a company needs to show balance. Showing ambition tempered with realism and deep knowledge of your business and numbers is key. Try to be kind to others to try and make a difference in the world, and also practice to try and make a difference in your own life as well. Face your fear of failing The fear of failing can be immobilizing ? it can cause us to do nothing, and therefore resist moving forward. But when we allow fear to stop our forward progress in life, we're likely to miss some great opportunities along the way. what makes us fearless is not the fact that we do not experience fear, but that we are confident that we can deal with the consequences of our actions. Instead of talking yourself out of the fear by hoping that nothing negative would happen, focus on building confidence to deal with the consequences. We don?t grow. We?re not challenged. We don?t get to find out what we?re made of. Breaking out of your comfort zone means taking up new challenges. This will automatically make you more productive as you work towards achieving the new goals. Getting out of your comfort zone from time to time creates just enough good stress to ramp up your focus, creativity, pace, and drive, and it helps you respond to life stress when unexpected things happen. Try to make small changes that take you out of the everyday and familiar, yet are not too emotionally challenging. You have within yourself the ability to make big change. Reach out Reaching out does not just mean having someone listen to you. It also means you get access to information, advice, guidance and other kinds of assistance from different people. Yet, in our society, some value their independence so much that asking for help seems like a weakness. It's important to talk. Whether it?s sending a text, messaging on social media sites, leaving a comment on a blog, meeting up for a coffee and a chat or sending a good old-fashioned letter. These are things that can help. It?s important to reach out, to let people in. It may seem scary. But believe me, it?s amazing the weight that lifts afterward. Just knowing someone else knows can make a huge difference to how much strength you have to cope with difficult situations. However, by persevering and sticking to the task we will eventually overcome any trial. You can do anything you set your mind to, but it takes action, persistence, and the courage to face your fears. Perseverance is the key to a successful life. If you keep persevering long enough, you will achieve your true potential. Show up today Showing up every single day of your life is critical when it comes to the success of your business, organization and individual success. Just start today. Don't worry about what's happened in the past. Set yourself up for success. By showing up, this can lead to success by enabling you to reach your fullest potential. It?s a powerful habit may help you achieve your goals and live a happier life. Champions show up every day, whether that occurs on the field, on the court or in the boardroom. Showing up may help you be one of them. Make showing up the attitude of your life. Take small steps each day Small steps are attainable and are aren?t overwhelming, so they are more likely to stick. Then, inertia takes over and once we?re in motion, it?s easier to continue. Small steps help us create valuable habits, which help us achieve big goals. Small steps also allow us to better manage our cognitive load, meaning we have more headspace to deal with all our other thoughts and plans. With thinking creatively, you see problems as interesting opportunities, and you challenge assumptions and suspend judgment. You don't give up easily because of that. Thinking creatively is a good thing as the world continues to change and grow. This pushes us to learn new skills, to think differently, and to start asking the more important questions. ?Why?? and ?Why not?? Overcome your fears En Fear is very useful to us as humans. It is a human response to physical and emotional danger ? if we didn't feel it, we won't be able protect ourselves from legitimate threats. But we all must learn to live with a certain level of uncertainty in your life because you will never eliminate all risk in life. In order for us to take care of our bodies, we eat well, exercise and make sure to get enough sleep. That's our internal environment. And the environment that surrounds us -- air, soil, water and ecosystems -- is equally important for our health and the health and well being of others. It is so important that we do our due diligence in helping nature to thrive, however we can. As young people looking towards the future, we can all take responsibility for our planet and environment, making sure that That starts with taking care of the environment so that future generations will be able to enjoy the benefits in years to come. Stand up for what you care for One of the most difficult things for people to do is to stand up for their beliefs and what they care for. Sticking up for what you believe in and care for builds your self-respect because you're following through with your values. When you stand up for what you believe in, you are your own person. You are in charge of what you do. Stand up for what you believe in and care for, even if it means standing by yourself. Because even if you are standing alone, you'll know for a fact that it was your choice. Fight for what you believe in and care for because if you don?t stand up for them, who will? Try and try again Trying again is important since failures are a part of life and if we stop after failure we allow ourself to accept defeat. We should grow stronger with failure. With determination and perseverance we must keep trying to achieve what we want in life. Trying takes commitment and an intention to give the best of yourself to something without necessarily knowing the outcome. Focus on what can be learnt from a failure and hace a better chance of success the next time around. Syncify An app that lets you be social at a distance. But the truth is, mistakes can be like gifts. Mistakes teach us the importance of staying humble. We learn that we are only human and that mistakes are inevitable. Without making mistakes, we would stay in our comfort zone, which leads us to inflexibility when things don?t work the way we want them to. Avoid judging Judging a person does not define who they are, it defines who you are. Regardless of the reason, we don't have a right to judge anyone. The least amount of judging we can do, the better off we are. We need to learn to love and accept each other no matter what. When you show people that you accept them and are not judging them it makes them feel so good about themselves. When we stop being judgmental, we start appreciating people and things for what they are; we start living in the present moment and we can simply enjoy life and be happy. So, judge less, accept more, and restore your happiness. Syncify An app that lets you be social at a distance. Listen to your favourite podcasts and books together with friends and groups. Besides boosting happiness, positive emotion, and kindness, exposure to nature may also have physical and mental health benefits. Nature helps us cope with pain. Just a walk in the woods or a stroll by the beach on a sunny morning can awaken the innermost feelings of happiness and peace. Time in nature or viewing nature scenes provides a breathing space for our overactive minds, refreshing us moving forward. Staying close to nature, observing all the little and significant elements of it, and appreciating it from the very core, is therapeutic and self-healing. Even by saying and doing nothing, we can learn so much from connecting to our natural surroundings. It gives us the perspective for healthier living, the motivation to carry on, and the energy to keep trying. Wake yourself up and reassure yourself that you?re not just here to go through the motions. You?re here for a purpose! If you keep doing things the same way you always have, you will easily find things to be meaningless or even depressing. To feed your creativity, you have to step out and try new things. Don?t be afraid of new experiences. Don?t live your life with regrets. Push your comfort zone and try new things. A better version of yourself starts at the edge of your comfort zone. Be coachable To be coachable means to lack arrogance and defensiveness and you check your pride and ego at the door. It means you don?t judge your coaches approach but try and adapt to it. When you allow someone to coach you, you allow that person to contribute to the situation, problem or decisions you need to face. Therefore, we often don?t value the precious benefits of slow growth. We now expect that nearly everything should happen fast and with little or no inconvenience that we forget that slow, imperfect progress is better than none at all. Slow growth can be confusing and frustrating, but, at the end, growth is always good - no matter how slow you progress. Resiliency is key for startups Entrepreneurship is obviously challenging. To be successful in building your business, you must be resilient. Building a business, managing employees, expanding customer or client bases, developing products and services ? these are all the types of responsibilities that can eat away at a founder?s mental and emotional fortitude. Don?t let the threat of failure stop you; instead, be motivated to find solutions and advance toward your goal. It?s much more important for entrepreneurs to be able to tough it out. Failing forward means learning from our setbacks and making the necessary adjustments to move on and succeed. The faster and harder you fail, the less afraid you are of it because you have come out on the other side of it and are usually stronger and better equipped for it. Failing is just part of the journey and a step toward figuring things out. It?s not the end of the world if you fail at something. It just means that you're willing enough to do something new. Use failure as an opportunity to be better. Take action Your life would be better if you took the action you?ve been avoiding - showing your interest in that girl. Actually making a habit of getting exercise. Taking the first step towards starting your business. The only thing that's stopping you is also you. Without action, nothing happens. So when you take action, not only do additional resources come your way, but you get feedback that helps you adjust your course and refine your approach. Stop waiting until conditions are perfect, stop over-thinking things, focus on the present and use action to overcome fear. Taking action is the one thing that molds you into a winner.
