Battle Lessons with Damon Johnson (LiveStream Audio)

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents guitarist Damon Johnson (recorded Feb. 19th 2021)   We discuss his new album, upcoming Thin Lizzy dates and much more.     Press release - Battle Lessons released February 19, 2021 (Nashville, TN) January 13, 2021 -- Debuting today on Vevo, the new video for the title track to Damon Johnson and The Get Ready?s upcoming album, Battle Lessons, due out February 19, 2021 via Double Dragon Records. The video was directed by Carl Johnson, remotely from his Detroit studio, and features the trio ripping through the cut with a megawatt energy. The album?s iconic cover art is also utilized throughout the piece symbolizing an entity in motion moments before encountering a powerful electrical charge and ultimately exploding from the screen. Of the track Johnson says, ?The lyrics to the song ?Battle Lessons? are about some past experiences in various bands I?ve been in through the years. Though the words could easily be applied to any relationship.? He adds. ?The lyric instructs me that I should take all the experience from my musical past and apply it to my now fully focused solo career.? No battle lessons lost on him. The internationally renowned guitarslinger, vocalist, songwriter, announced the release of his new album late last year. Battle Lessons is anchored by the searing title track showcasing Johnson?s gutsy vocals and razor riffs over presto grooves by The Get Ready drummer Jarred Pope (Tom Keifer) and bassist Robbie Harrington (Steve Vai). The song immediately reacted at radio, reaching #13 on the Classic Rock Chart. Work on the new album was made possible with the assistance of an Indiegogo pre-order helping to support the recording of Johnson and his new trio, The Get Ready. Recorded in Damon?s adopted hometown of Nashville, Battle Lessons was produced and mixed by multi-platinum producer/mixer, Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Evanescence, Rush, Stone Sour and more). Rock fans know Johnson?s name from his years of scorching stages as lead guitarist in the Alice Cooper band, and later with Thin Lizzy and the Lizzy-offshoot Black Star Riders in addition to fronting the potent ?90s Southern rockers Brother Cane. Johnson?s songs have been recorded and sung by stars like Stevie Nicks (?Everyday? from her Trouble in Shangri-La) and Steven Tyler (singing on ?Just Feel Better? for Carlos Santana?s All That I Am). With Battle Lessons, Johnson returns to his original hard-rock sound, feeding that fire he first discovered as a teenager playing Van Halen and AC/DC covers while in garage bands. Featuring nine newly written songs, the tracks are just as much about clever lyrics and sticky melodies as eyelash-searing guitars. ?These are as good of songs as I?ve been a part of creating, ever in my whole career,? Johnson says. And that?s saying something - as singer/guitarist, and frontman of Brother Cane, the Birmingham, Alabama rock band who notched a string of ?90s rock hits, including ?Got No Shame,? ?I Lie In The Bed I Make? and chart-topper ?And Fools Shine On.? In 2019 Johnson released Memoirs of an Uprising, a solo project that is both fierce and diverse. The first single, ?Shivering Shivering? became an instant Top 10 Rock track. Immediately following that albums release Johnson spent the remainder of the 2019 on a series of dates crossing North America including several shows with The Winery Dogs (a supergroup of rockers featuring Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan), a run of shows supporting Clutch, and the U.S. leg of the UFO tour. Nothin' But A Good Time (oral history of 1980s hard rock) authors Tom Beaujour and Richard Bienstock (LiveStream Audio)

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon and Alan Niven along with The Jeremy White Podcast present authors Tom Beaujour and Richard Bienstock.   We discuss their book Nothin' But A Good Time (see description below)   Nothin' But a Good Time is the definitive, no-holds-barred oral history of 1980s hard rock and hair metal, told by the musicians and industry insiders who lived it. Hard rock in the 1980s was a hedonistic and often intensely creative wellspring of escapism that perfectly encapsulated?and maybe even helped to define?a spectacularly over-the-top decade. Indeed, fist-pumping hits like Twisted Sister?s ?We?re Not Gonna Take It,? Mötley Crüe?s ?Girls, Girls, Girls,? and Guns N? Roses? ?Welcome to the Jungle? are as inextricably linked to the era as Reaganomics, Pac-Man, and E.T. From the do-or-die early days of self-financed recordings and D.I.Y. concert productions that were as flashy as they were foolhardy, to the multi-Platinum, MTV-powered glory years of stadium-shaking anthems and chart-topping power ballads, to the ultimate crash when grunge bands like Nirvana forever altered the entire climate of the business, Tom Beaujour and Richard Bienstock's Nothin' But a Good Time captures the energy and excess of the hair metal years in the words of the musicians, managers, producers, engineers, label executives, publicists, stylists, costume designers, photographers, journalists, magazine publishers, video directors, club bookers, roadies, groupies, and hangers-on who lived it. Featuring an impassioned foreword by Slipknot and Stone Sour vocalist and avowed glam metal fanatic Corey Taylor, and drawn from over 200 new interviews with members of Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Guns N? Roses, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Winger, Warrant, Cinderella, Quiet Riot and others, as well as Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford and many more, this is the ultimate, uncensored, and often unhinged chronicle of a time where excess and success walked hand in hand, told by the men and women who created a sound and style that came to define a musical era?one in which the bands and their fans went looking for nothin? but a good time?and found it. The Arc Of Life with Yes' Billy Sherwood (LiveStream audio)

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon in conjunction with The Jeremy White Podcast present Yes/Asia's Billy Sherwood. (Recorded February 2021) We discuss his new band Arc Of Life and much more. Press Release: ARC OF LIFE is a new progressive rock supergroup which features three members of the current YES line-up, vocalist Jon Davison bassist/vocalist Billy Sherwood, and drummer Jay Schellen. Completing the lineup is one of the most interesting talents in the ?new? progressive rock scene in the US, Dave Kerzner (ex-Sound of Contact) on keyboards and Jimmy Haun (also featured on YES albums in the past) on guitars. Their self-titled debut album is slated for release on February 12, 2021. The concept behind the band is, in keeping with the progressive rock philosophy, to craft creative, challenging, and ear-pleasing music that pushes boundaries. The other idea behind the band is that YES would be a clear point of influence. But while YES is clearly the main influence, a lot of musical comparisons can be made to describe Arc Of Life?s grandiose and epic approach to music. But those descriptions are best left to the listeners to discern for themselves as repeat listens will reveal more layers. Arc Of Life is a true garden of delight for all progressive rock fans!     Help support the show. Pete Trewavas (Marillion, Transatlantic, Kino) - YouTube LiveStream Audio

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents Pete Trewavas (Marillion, Transatlantic, Kino, Edison's Children). Recorded Feb. 2nd 2021.   We discuss Transatlantic's new album (details below), Marillion, his playing style with each band, the surprise hit Kayleigh and much more.     Transatlantic have never been a band to resist a challenge. So it should come as no surprise that for their fifth album ?The Absolute Universe?, Neal Morse Roine Stolt Pete Trewavas and Mike Portnoy have really gone out to do something a little unusual. ?We have actually come up with something unprecedented,? says Portnoy proudly. ?We've got two versions of this album. There's a two CD presentation (?Forevermore?),which is 90 minutes long, and a single one (?The Breath Of Life?) - that's 60minutes. The single CD is NOT an edited version of the double CD. They're new recordings. What we have done are different approaches to the songs for this! We wrote fresh lyrics and have different people singing on the single CD version tracks as compared to those on the double CD. We revamped the songs to make the two versions different.? For this record, the band have also returned to the concept album format: ?What we have is essentially one giant composition, split into chapters. The storyline is about the struggles facing everyone in society today? comments Portnoy. ?We didn't start out with the idea of this being conceptual,? admits Stolt. ?The way things work with us is that we have a load of ideas, and these are developed spontaneously when we meet up. Everything happens in the moment.? For Trewavas, 'The Absolute Universe' is a momentous project. ?I think it is right up there with the very finest albums we've done.? ?The Absolute Universe ? The Breath of Life? is available as a Limited CD Digipak, Gatefold 2LP + CD & as Digital Album. ?The Absolute Universe ? Forevermore? is available as a Limited 2CDDigipak, 3LP+2CD Boxset & as Digital Album. ?The Absolute Universe ? RATT's Robbin Crosby - His final Interview (recorded June 2001)

Welcome to this very special edition of ROCK TALK With Mitch Lafon as I dig back into my vaults to June 10th 2001 - for what is Robbin Crosby of RATT's final interview. At the time Robbin was in hospice care and very much wanted to have his version of the band's history documented. For historical purposes nothing from the discussion has been removed including pre & post interview banter. The interview was done over the phone and recorded using a Radio Shack call recorder device plugged into a Sony Mini-Disc.The interview was set up by Ratt bassist Juan Croucier.   RECORDING - remastered by Jeremy White (January 2021) NO part of this interview may be used (in whole or in part) without my express written consent. Jason Bieler - Songs For The Apocalypse (YouTube Livestream Audio)

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents JASON BIELER (Recorded December 21st 2020) Jason talks about his new album Songs For The Apocalypse, Saigon Kick and more. See full press release below: RELEASE DATE: January 22, 2021 Jason Bieler is prepared to release his new solo album, ?Songs For The Apocalypse? this coming January. The album, aptly being released under the monkier JASON BIELER AND THE BARON VON BIELSKI ORCHESTRA, sees Bieler working with a diverse array of musical friends including: Todd LaTorre (Queensryche), Dave Ellefson (Megadeth), Devin Townsend, Pat Badger (Extreme), Butch Walker (ex-Marvelous 3), Bumblefoot (Sons of Apollo), Clint Lowery (Sevendust), Benji Webbe (Skindred), Kyle Sanders (Hellyeah) and more! When Bieler was reached for comment about the new album, he said: "I'm fairly certain they mistakenly assumed they were signing Justin Bieber based on the blockbuster deal we signed?but it's too late for them now as I'm already recording and spent an obscene amount of the budget on my Super PAC advocating that 'Lunch Is On The Way' be Subway's new official theme song." When asked about the record, Jason will only say that "it will NOT be my heaviest record yet, but it will feature a bunch of friends and musicians I love and respect. It should sound something like if NEUROSIS got stuck in a blizzard at a Wawa with SUPERTRAMP, then JELLYFISH showed up and they all decided to do Barry Manilow covers in the style of MESHUGGAH, but in waltz time with slight country underpinnings?yet accessible for the masses." Bieler then asked that Frontiers promptly get the hashtag #ChockFullOfBangers trending on Twitter. Bieler is a singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer who is also known for playing with hard rock band SAIGON KICK, which achieved a platinum single in the US with the timeless hit "Love Is On The Way" from its gold-selling album "The Lizard", which Jason also produced. Bieler also played in an early touring version of TALISMAN with Marcel Jacob and Jeff Scott Soto, as well as SUPER TRANSATLANTIC, with EXTREME bassist Pat Badger, earning them a gold record for their work on the soundtrack for the "American Pie" movie. Recently, Bieler had been touring extensively as a solo artist (until the worldwide pandemic slowed that down). The shows featured a wide array of musical styles, absurdists humor, special guests, and more. He also runs, along with his brother, a successful record label, Bieler Bros., which has worked with SKINDRED, WILL HAVEN, NONPOINT, KARNIVOOL, SIKTH, and many more.
