PSP 190: When OCD isn?t a Fear But Rather a Feeling of Disgust

Unfortunately many people believe, including some mental health professionals, that in order to have OCD you must have a core fear. Sadly, many people get misdiagnosed because people are searching up, down and all around for a fear. But OCD doesn?t have to be an intrusive thought, it can also be an intrusive feeling.

Many people with OCD will have an overwhelming feeling of disgust or grossness. This feeling causes so much discomfort that they will do everything in their power to avoid it. That is why they often develop compulsions and extreme avoidance.

In this week?s episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore how disgust and grossness play a role in OCD.

PSP 189: Handling the Grief that Comes with an Anxiety or OCD Diagnosis

Most of us had a fantasy of what parenting would look like. It might have involved Pinterest crafts, bake sales and play dates. It probably didn?t include hyperventilating, panic and avoidance. None of us signed up to parent a child with anxiety or OCD and most of us weren?t prepared to do it.

It?s normal to have grief over what would have been. It?s normal to feel sad about the extra layer of struggles that were scooped onto your parental plate. But how do you move through that grief? How do you work through it so you are better equipped to help your child?

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the grief that most of us feel when raising a child with anxiety or OCD, myself included. I also talk about how to not get so lost in the weeds that you aren?t able to find your way out.

Not all therapy is the same. Not all therapists are the same. And when it comes to anxiety and OCD you really want to get it right the first time. But many parents don?t know what to look for and some don?t even realize warning bells should be going off.

I invited some of my favorite Anxiety & Ocd therapists to come on to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast for our first ever Therapist Corner segment. In Therapist corner segments, Dr. Allison Solomon, Michelle Massi and I will discuss various topics that impact parents raising kids with anxiety or OCD.

PSP 187: Empowering Our Kids with Anxiety or OCD to Help Themselves

We want the best for our kids. We want our kids to blossom and live a happy fulfilling life. But when our kids start to struggle with anxiety or OCD we might think that rosy picture is gone forever.

We might think we have to ?cure? anxiety or OCD for them to be well again. But that?s the wrong way to look at it. We don?t need to ?cure? them, because that?s actually an impossibility, we need to train them.

Kids with anxiety or OCD can have a beautifully productive and happy life, but they need the right tools and the right training to go along with it.

In this latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about the importance in empowering our kids to help themselves and how to build their skills for long-term success.

PSP 186: Helping Teens with OCD with Lisa Coyne

Most teens don?t want people to tell them what to do, especially their parents. So what are parents supposed to do when they desperately want to help their teen with OCD? Sometimes that can be tricky.

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I invited Lisa Coyne, the co-author of the book, Stuff That?s Loud and the founder and senior clinical consultant of the McLean OCD Institute for Children and Adolescents. PSP 185: New OCD Graphic Novel for Teens | Interview with Jason Adam Katzenstein

Jason Adam Katzenstein gets it. He gets the struggle of what it feels like to have OCD and he gets the fear that comes along with trying to crush it.

Luckily for the OCD community, Jason is a popular and gifted cartoonist who decided to take his personal and vulnerable story and turn it into a graphic novel for the rest of the world to see.

Through images and words, he is able to encapsulate the struggles of OCD and the feeling of triumph when you start to push back.

I had the pleasure of talking with Jason about his life, his book and his view of OCD. To check out his book, Everything is an Emergency click here: https://amzn.to/3bXgyDD.

PSP 184: Four Simple Steps to Help Kids Self-Regulate with Lauren Spigelmyer

Many of our kids have a hard time self-regulating. Just like other skills, we often have to teach our kids how to successfully handle their difficult emotions. This can be especially hard for kids that have anxiety and OCD. When you are a child who already struggles with hyperarousal, it doesn?t take much to throw you completely off kilter.

That is why I invited Lauren Spigelmyer, the founder and Executive Director of The Behavior Hub. She is Also a Upenn Professor at the Trauma-invested Schools. She offers us a simple framework in which we can help our children self-regulate.

PSP 183: Handling Overwhelm When Parenting Kids with Anxiety or OCD

It can get pretty overwhelming parenting a child with anxiety or OCD. But this is a marathon not a sprint and burn out isn?t an option. Overwhelm is an issue we all deal with throughout this journey. It is something that can creep up on you without any warning.

So how do we as parents dial down our overwhelm?

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the common reasons why we get overwhelmed and what to do about it.

PSP 182: Helping Anxious Kids Wear Masks

Masks are a struggle for many kids, but if your child has anxiety or OCD it can be a much BIGGER struggle. This could be due to many reasons. Maybe they feel claustrophobic. Maybe they have sensory issues. Or maybe they have social anxiety and it seems embarrassing. Regardless of what the struggle is the end result is the same ? a child refusing to wear a mask.

This becomes extra tricky when masks are required in many areas. So in this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I outline some mask hacks to help reduce your child?s anxiety and get them to acclimate to the discomfort.

PSP 180: Important Highlights from the OCD Conference for Parents

The International OCD Foundation?s annual conference was cancelled along with pretty much everything else in 2020. But the online version did not disappoint, offering some great takeaways for parents raising kids with OCD.

In the latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I highlight some areas parents need to be updated on if they haven?t already. We talk about approaches for treatment resistant kids and how the Inhibitory Learning Model is altering the way we do exposures. Much of this is a review, but a great reminder of how things have been tweaked due to research in the last several years.

PSP 179: Understanding Magical Thinking in OCD

OCD symptoms and behaviors can look vastly different in each person. You might have a child who has compulsions centered around contamination while another person might have a child with compulsions around magical thinking. You might have a child with both!

I always tell parents that you want to be well versed in all the many ways OCD can pop up. OCD is whack-a-mole and it often changes themes and compulsions over time. The best proactive action you can take to help your child with OCD is knowledge.

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explain what OCD magical thinking is, how it shows up and how to help a child who is dealing with it.

PSP 178: Helping Anxious Kids Who Crumble Under Pressure

Anxious kids crumble under pressure for a variety of reasons. They might worry about deadlines and school work. They might worry about the social pressures of being called on or being watched. They might fear being less than perfect or being worse than others. They might have difficulties making decisions, worried about picking the wrong choice.

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about why kids crumble under pressure and how to help them.

Sometimes avoidance is actually a bigger issue called PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance). This is a subtype on the autistic spectrum. Currently it is not as well known in the United States. To learn more go to: https://www.pdasociety.org.uk.

PSP 174: Teaching Our Kids to Be Kind Even When Others Aren?t

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk about ways to help foster our children?s ability to be kind and do the right thing, even when others aren?t being kind around them.

PSP 173: What to Do When Therapy isn?t Enough for a Child with Anxiety or OCD

Your child needs help, but therapy isn?t cutting it. Maybe it?s because she refuses to go or perhaps it?s because her issues are just too intense for outpatient therapy.

What?s a parent supposed to do when the help isn?t helping?

Outpatient therapy is where the road starts, not where it ends. Many parents don?t realize that. In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Sami, a member of my AT Parenting Community to discuss her journey trying to help her daughter with OCD. She discussed the process of getting her into a PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) and her experience once she was in.

Sami is also a Life Coach for teen girls. She offers programs to support teens, including a few that help anxious teens. To learn more about her programs visit her website at Knowingup.com.

PSP 172: How to Handle the Stress of Raising a Child with Anxiety or OCD

Raising a child with anxiety or OCD should come with a warning label, ?Warning: May be hazardous to your health.? Being a rock to a child that is often flailing in the sea of chaos, can be draining to even the best of us. It can wear you down, destroy your sleep and impact your mood stability.

But it doesn?t have to be that way. There are ways that we can maintain our health and mental stability, while still helping a less than stable child.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about the quicksand many of us find ourselves in and some simple ways you can claw yourself out of it.

PSP 171: Understanding Emetophobia, The Fear of Throwing Up with Chrissie Hodges

Parents often grapple with what may have caused their child to become so deathly afraid of throwing up. They come up with theories. Maybe it was the time she saw her cousin throw up? Or maybe it was the time she got sick in the car? Or maybe it was the time she got food poisoning?

But in reality, the fear of throwing up (also known as Emetophobia) just happens.

Kids who are genetically prone to anxiety or OCD are at a higher risk of developing Emetophobia. Yes, it can be triggered by an external event, but the genetic seeds are usually just waiting to sprout. That event often only triggers what was already waiting in the wings.

Just think about how many times people have seen others throw up or who have had bad experiences throwing up themselves. Most of those people don?t develop a severe fear of throw up.

Emetophobia is just one of many ways anxiety and OCD can manifest.

So how do you help your child with Emetophobia? Often it is the opposite of what you would think.

I invited Chrissie Hodges to the AT Parenting Survival Podcast to discuss her life long battle with Emetophobia. Chrissie has been a powerful advocate for those suffering with OCD. She is a mental health advocate and speaker and provides OCD peer support and consultation.

She was awarded the 2017 International OCD Foundation?s Advocacy Hero Award for all of her work. She is the author of Pure O: The Invisible Side of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and is the Executive Director of OCD Game Changers, an international non-profit group dedicated to helping people with OCD, their families and providers.

You can learn more about Chrissie, her work and OCD Game Changers on her website http://www.chrissiehodges.com And on OCD Game Changers website http://www.ocdgamechangers.com.

PSP 170: How to Help Anxious Kids Help Themselves

It is hard to watch our anxious kids suffer. It is hard to stomach their pain. It is very tempting to swoop in and protect them. To soften their fall. To protect them from feeling discomfort. But that is robbing them of the opportunity to build their skills. I find that the best way to help anxious kids is to teach them how to help themselves.

But easy to say, right? But how does one do that?

In this week?s podcast episode I outline some of the ways parents can start to empower their kids to help themselves.

PSP 169: A Parent?s Journey Through Anxiety and Autism

Autism can be a confusing disorder because it often comes with so many other comorbid conditions. Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can show signs of anxiety, OCD and ADHD. Initially it can be hard for parents and even professionals to get an accurate diagnosis.

In this month?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast segment Member Spotlight, I talk to Lynn about her struggles trying to understand her daughter?s behavior. She talks about how her daughter was given an anxiety diagnosis early on, but how she felt like something was missing.

PSP 168: How to Spot OCD Symptoms in Teens

Most kids with OCD go into adulthood without a diagnosis. This means years of feeling different. Years of feeling ashamed. And years of little to no support. If parents and therapists can learn how to spot OCD symptoms in teens, we could help them save years of unnecessary pain and suffering.

OCD requires a very specific therapeutic approach called Exposure Response Prevention (ERP). If a teen?s OCD symptoms are missed, they are also missing the help they so desperately need and deserve.

Sadly teens with OCD who go undiagnosed have a higher likelihood of suffering from depression and ongoing symptoms.

So what are the signs of OCD in teens?

It?s not always an easy thing to detect. Teens with OCD have had years to develop compulsions. Many of them have gotten very good at the art of hiding these behaviors.

Let?s start with what OCD is and what it isn?t.

OCD is not about being a ?neat freak.? Many extremely messy teens are silently suffering from OCD. OCD is not about being obsessed with organizing. Many disorganized teens can still have OCD.

OCD is about having an intrusive thought, feeling, image or song stuck in one?s head and the need to do or avoid something to get some brief relief. The problem is, the more you do or avoid, the bigger the OCD grows.

OCD isn?t just about germs. In fact, many people with OCD don?t worry about germs. There are many different ?sub-types? or themes around OCD.

The common denominator though is this: They all have an intrusive thought, feeling, image or song in their head and they all do compulsions to get some relief.

So how can you tell if your teen has OCD?

When in doubt, go see an OCD therapist to get a proper assessment. You can visit the International OCD Foundation?s therapist directory (www.iocdf.org/find-help) to see if there is anyone in your area. It is always good to be proactive and get professional help. This podcast episode is just to help jump start you in thinking about OCD in a different way so you don?t miss it.

PSP 167: What is Emotional Contamination OCD?

OCD can wreak havoc in any family. But one sub-type of OCD that can be particularly painful is emotional contamination OCD. Emotional contamination issues can hurt family relationships and confuse parents.

Sadly most people, even mental health professionals, understand very little about how OCD can manifest. OCD isn?t just about germs and constant cleaning. OCD has many themes and sub-types. It is so important for families raising kids with OCD to educate themselves on the various ways OCD can show up. The best defense against OCD is to recognize it?s many disguises.

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I discuss what emotional contamination OCD is and how it shows up in children and teens.

PSP 166: Moving our Kids with Anxiety or OCD from Dependency to Resiliency

We all do things for our kids. But there comes a time when we do too much. We inadvertently send a message that they are not capable of doing things for themselves. Ironically this directly impacts their ability to independently fight their anxiety or OCD.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk about how to move our kids from dependency to resiliency one small step at a time.

PSP 165: Three Ways to Help Anxious Kids with Picky Eating with Alisha Grogan

If your child is anxious, they are more likely to be a picky eater as well. This makes sense if you really

think about it. Anxiety loves to scare our kids. It?s too dark. It?s too dangerous. Anxiety likes to whisper

things about food too. It?s too chewy. It?s too smelly. What if?s like to have their turn too. What if I

choke? What if it tastes really bad?

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Alisha Grogan, an Occupational Therapist

and creator of the site, Your Kid?s Table to offer us three simple ways to help our kids with picky eating.

Her ideas are simple to carry out, yet highly effective.

PSP 164: A Parent?s Journey Handling Her Child?s Separation Anxiety

Clinical Separation Anxiety isn?t a toddler problem. In fact, symptoms often start to show up when kids are in elementary or middle school.

Separation Anxiety Disorder isn?t about having a toddler follow you around. It is about having a child who experiences sheer panic when they are not by your side. It is about having a child who needs to know your whereabouts every second of every day.

In this month?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast Member Spotlight segment, I interviewed Shannon, an AT Parenting Community Member and a mom to three kids. She graciously agreed to share with us her journey helping her kids with separation anxiety.

PSP 163: Three of the Most Commonly Missed Compulsions in Childhood OCD

OCD loves to hide. It loves to go undetected. We often think that compulsions are obvious behaviors, like over washing or over straightening. Things that we can see. Things we can measure.

But compulsions are often so much more complicated than that. They can be subtle. They can hide in plain sight.

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I reveal the three most commonly missed compulsions in childhood OCD. If your child has OCD, it is highly likely that they are doing at least one of these.

Should I be working on my child?s anxiety or OCD right now?

How do I do exposures around separation anxiety when we aren?t going anywhere?

How can I help my child with social anxiety when they don?t have to see anyone?

How can I help my child with school anxiety when they don?t have to go to school?

PSP 161: A Parent?s Story of Raising a Child with Anxiety & OCD During a Pandemic

Raising a child during a pandemic is a BIG challenge. But when you add anxiety and OCD to the mix, it can be a tall order to handle.

Every month I have a segment on the AT Parenting Survival Podcast called Member Spotlight. This is where I get to spotlight an AT Parenting Community member?s journey through raising a child with anxiety or OCD.

This month I talked to Gina. Gina talks about her ongoing journey to help her daughter with anxiety and OCD. She discusses how the pandemic has impacted her daughter and what they are doing as a family to get through it.

PSP 159: Raising Resilient Kids in a Changing World with Madeline Levine

We are living in an ever-changing world. Our kids are living in an ever-changing world. This might be a scary notion to many, especially considering what is going on in our world right now.

But what if we had the capability of improving our child?s resilience? What if we could teach our kids to systematically move towards their fears instead of away from them. What if we could teach our kids how to build up their ability to be adaptable, flexible and thrive under challenging conditions.

In the latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast I invited Madeline Levine on to discuss just that. She is the New York Times bestselling author of Teach Your Child Well and The Price of Privilege. In her new book, Ready or Not: Preparing Our Kids to Thrive in an Uncertain and Rapidly Changing World, she talks about the necessity for us to shift gears in how we approach parenting.

We discussed what skills our children will need to be successful and how we, as parents, can foster those skills.

PSP 158: How to Help Kids Adapt to a New Normal with the Coronavirus

Our kids are home indefinitely. Classes are cancelled. Parties, sporting events and extracurriculars - all gone for now. Many of our pantries look like we are waiting for a hurricane to hit.

So how are we supposed to help our kids not panic?

How are we supposed to help our kids develop a new routine and not go stir crazy?

How are we supposed to keep our anxiety in check so it doesn?t rub off on our children?

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore all these struggles and try to help shine a light in what can feel at times like a deep hole of darkness.

PSP 157: How to Explain the Coronavirus to Kids with Anxiety or OCD

Our kids worry about death. They worry about disease. They worry about germs. And even if they don?t worry about those things now, who?s to say they won?t start? So how are we supposed to explain the Coronavirus to kids with anxiety or OCD?

That can be tricky. But if your child is school-aged and doesn?t live in a bubble, they?re going to hear lots of talk about it. In fact, it seems like that is the main topic of conversation around the lunch table and at recess.

In this week?s podcast episode, I talk about how to explain the Coronavirus to kids with anxiety or OCD.

Also, in this week?s Kids Youtube video I am offering you some help with this difficult topic. I talk to kids and teens directly about what the Coronavirus is and how to not let panic set in.

PSP 156: A Mother?s Story of Raising a Child with OCD

In this monthly series on the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I interview parents from the AT Parenting Community as part of our member spotlight. In this month?s episode, I talk to Tiffany as she shares with us her trials and tribulations of raising a child with OCD. PSP 155: An Adoptive Mom Talks About her Journey Raising a Child with Invisible Needs

Many of us fantasized what parenthood would look like way before we had children. Our ideas of parenthood might have been solidified in early childhood, as we tucked our baby doll into her toy crib. Or it may have been dreamt about the moment we knew we were about to become a parent.

But for some of us, the dream and reality didn?t match. Our children had issues. Our children had fears. Our children had struggles.

Janelle Molony?s idea of motherhood wasn?t what she had imagined. After entering the world of foster care to adopt her child, she was thrown into a whirlwind of issues and struggles she wasn?t anticipating.

In her memoir, Un-Adoptable? Faith Beyond Foster Care, she recounts her struggles and triumphs and how ultimately, she was able to move out of the darkness and into the light.

I had the pleasure of talking with Janelle on this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast. To learn more about Janelle?s work go to her website, www.adoptiontolife.com or check out her book Un-Adoptable? Faith Beyond Foster Care here: https://amzn.to/2PBSZX1

PSP 154: How to Tell if Your Child?s Anxiety or OCD Therapy is Working

You make the appointments. You drive your child each week. You hand over your credit card. But how do you really know if your child?s therapy is working. What should you look for? What are some red flags? Therapy can be time consuming and expensive, so it is important you know you are on the right track sooner rather than later!

In this AT Parenting Survival Podcast episode, I share my insight as both a mom and a therapist on what are the signs you are moving in the right direction and the red flags that might indicate you are going down the wrong path.

PSP 153: The Lonely Journey of Parenting a Child with Anxiety or OCD

When I began my journey parenting kids with anxiety or OCD, it was a lonely experience ? and I am an anxiety and OCD child therapist!

I felt my judgement was questioned.

I felt the diagnoses were questioned.

I felt like my parenting was questioned.

I can only imagine how others without my expertise might feel.

I knew enough to trust my gut.

I knew enough to stand up and defend my children?s diagnoses.

I knew enough to understand that others weren?t going to get my kids or my parenting.

What about the sea of parents who don?t know enough? Who question their judgement? Who second guess the diagnosis? Who join the others and berate their own parenting?

This podcast episode is for you. I hear you. I see you. I understand you.

You are not alone.

PSP 152: A Mother's Journey to Help Her Daughter and Others with OCD

Parenting a child with OCD can be overwhelming and lonely. The first Tuesday of every month, I am highlighting a member of the AT Parenting Community. We can learn from the real stories of others living a life, similar to ours.

In these stories we can see our own.

In this episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I talk to Molly, a mother of a tween who has had OCD for several years. Molly shares their struggles and wins. She talks about how her daughter?s struggles led their family to write Practice Being Brave, Owning My OCD. This is one of my favorite books on OCD and I recommend it to everyone I see in my practice. You can check it out here:

Most of us want kind kids. Who doesn?t? But there is an art to fostering and raising truly authentically kind people. It is now more important than ever to raise kind kids. Kids who won?t be afraid to stand up for what is right. Kids who are empathetic and respectful to those around them.

I invited Nicole Black, the creator of the site Coffee and Carpool, to share with us the common pitfalls many of us fall into when trying to raise kind kids. She also offers some great approaches to solidify kindness.

Nicole Black is a prior elementary school teacher and mom to three kids. PSP 150: Do I Tell My Child They Have Been Diagnosed with Anxiety or OCD?

Often one of the initial struggles parents face when their child has been diagnosed with anxiety or OCD is what to tell their child. Do they even tell them at all? If they do, is it going to help or hurt the situation?

I do have some strong opinions about this topic. I go into what I think and why I view it this way in my latest episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast.

If you are on the fence about how to talk to your child about their anxiety or OCD, this podcast episode is for you!

PSP 149: How to Help Kids who Worry About Their Health with Dr. Josh Spitalnick

Health and anxiety have an intimate relationship. They love to hang out together. They love to work together. Anxiety can make you feel sick. Sickness can make you feel anxious. It can be a vicious duo that can wreak havoc in your child?s life.

So how are you supposed to help kids who worry about their heath or whose anxiety makes them constantly feel slick? I brought Dr. Josh Spitalnick from Anxiety Specialists of Atlanta to help shed some light on how parents can help kids who worry about their health. He offers some helpful insight and take away approaches that often seem counterintuitive but are crucial in helping our kids.

To learn more about Dr. Josh Spitalnick's practice go to www.Anxietyspecialistsofatlanta.com

PSP 148: A Mother Talks About Celebrating the Small Wins with her Anxious Kids

Living with anxious kids requires a different kind of parenting. Sometimes it can feel exhausting. Sometimes it can feel frustrating. And sometimes it can feel inspiring and hopeful. It can be quite the roller-coaster ride.

In The AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I am doing a monthly series highlighting real life stories from members of the AT Parenting Community. This month I want to introduce you to Katherine. Katherine is raising two young children with anxiety. She talks about her struggles and her effort to create a home that celebrates even the smallest of wins.

I always find her inspiring, uplifting and real. She is always full of creative ideas and she graciously shares some of them with us during this interview.

The AT Parenting Community opens it's doors only a few times a year! One of those times is coming up next month. To get on the waitlist and not miss the opportunity to join us, click here.

PSP 147: Do You Worry if Your Child?s Progress Will Last with their Anxiety or OCD?

Anxiety and OCD can take its toll. It can be exhausting, overwhelming and traumatizing for the whole family. So, when your child starts to make some big improvements, it?s normal to be worried about how long it will last. It?s normal to doubt the progress. You might ask yourself, ?Is this for real? Is this the new normal??

Many of us live waiting for the other shoe to drop. I am TOTALLY guilty of this. Luckily, I have a husband who auto-corrects my anxious mind. I also work everyday to re-frame my catastrophic thinking.

In this week?s AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I am talking about how to soak up your child?s success without living in the future of What if?s.
