?Angels We Have Heard on High (feat. Al Church)? by Gaelynn Lea from Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn

That was from today?s special holiday guest. She is on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist.

HOLIDAY FEATURE: Gaelynn Lea

Traditional fiddle music tugs at the heartstrings, and it infuses feeling into what is otherwise notes on a page. There?s something transformative about it. Not only has Gaeylnn Lea mastered her craft, but her experimental use of this time-honored instrument adds yet another dimension to the sound. Melodies are stretched and harmonies are crafted by her use of live looping, paired with obvious classical training. It?s updated, and ultimately, very satisfying. Cellist Zoe Keating springs to mind as one listens to Lea?s use of her chosen instrument. It?s no wonder she has drawn attention for her music?she has really been carving out her own niche in the industry.

Gaelynn has been playing the violin for over two decades, and there?s little doubt she?s comfortable with bow in hand. It really does take a person mastering an instrument before experimentation can be successful. The challenge is to depart from the norm and create something unique?all while expanding on previous training. The skill is still in there--but the music grows larger and more full. This is what Gaelynn does, and it?s a pleasure to hear the thread of the familiar woven in with the freshness of something new at the hands of an experienced artist.

The musician has been recognized for her work?being chosen as the winner of NPR Music?s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, recognized as a benchmark in the world of music. This competition brings in thousands of submissions, and to win is quite the accomplishment!

Those who are looking for a forward-looking holiday collection of music will want to investigate Lea?s album, "Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn". The tracks that are included here boast many of the well-known popular carol names, such as Angels We Have Heard on High, Silent Night, Away in a Manger, and O Come, O Come Emmanuel--but you haven?t ever heard them played like this before.

The 14-track album is an easy fit for anyone who is a true strings aficionado, and it would round out any collection of holiday music. Perfect for everything from a romantic candlelight dinner with your love, or at a family gathering, ?Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn? is a delight to listen to. Experience the joy of hearing Christmas favorites that are coaxed into a new form through the hands of a talented musician.

FEATURED PLAYLIST: Christmas Driving Music

Our latest playlist features music that is perfect for a Christmas Drive. Gather up your presents. Hop in the car. Let's go for a drive to visit family and friends with this delightful playlist of Celtic Christmas music for driving down the road.

Listen to Christmas Driving now on Spotify.

?God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / Pathways / The Kesh? by Abbots Cross from Christmas Visions

That was from today?s special holiday guest?Abbots Cross. They are on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist-Christmas Driving Music.

HOLIDAY FEATURE: Abbots Cross

Pair up two experienced musicians who enjoy Celtic music and what do you get? Well, in this case, you get Abbots Cross! One half of this duo is Alan Booth, who plays guitar, fiddle, and provides the vocals for the group. Alan comes from a musical family and has been steeped in it all his life, starting with piano at the tender age of five, and having two music teachers for parents. He even does musical volunteer work in the Pittsburgh area where he?s from?and has traveled all the way to Kenya to share his deep love of singing and playing instruments.

The second half of this duo is Mike Clancy, who provides the percussion, as well as the Irish flute and whistles to the mix. Also a seasoned musician, he has performed for several of the Broadway shows that have traveled to Pittsburgh. Mike plays with several bands in addition to Abbots Cross, and has even created original jazz compositions and released them to CD himself.

It?s easy to see how the blending of these two men would provide the foundation for a solid band, and they do come together well to highlight their considerable talents! The holiday album, ?Christmas Visions? is a 10-track offering that has such interesting arrangements?and they are deftly played. Clancy?s flute takes center stage in many of these tracks, and it just adds so much to the music. In particular, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is just fantastic. These guys know how to stay true to the spirit of a holiday song while experimenting with what you can do with the music. Everything on this album has a very natural, free-flowing feel to it. It?s as if the arrangements are loose and the two musicians just get in the groove and have a good time pushing their abilities. A veritable Christmas ?jam session?!

Don?t miss Si Bheag, Si Mhor / The First Noel. It?s hauntingly beautiful, beginning with the flute and then picking up the guitar gently in the background. This track builds slowly and easily with a warmth and genuineness that is very pleasing. Deck the Halls is happy and cheery as it should be, but also paired with a Christmas Eve Reel, adding that Celtic flavor and appeal.

This holiday compilation by Abbots Cross is a real treat, and a standout among the many Christmas albums. Don?t miss the chance to add something different to your collection of Celtic music that will help you get into the mood for celebrating!

HOLIDAY FEATURE: Matt & Shannon Heaton

One of the lovely things about Celtic music is the fact that just a couple of people can make a whole lot of music, and this is certainly true when it comes to Matt & Shannon Heaton. This music duo offers flute/guitar/bouzouki and sweet, sweet harmony vocals in arrangements that are quite lovely.

Deeply involved in the Boston traditional music scene, the pair plays together seamlessly, and the enthusiasm that they have for the music really comes through. There?s a genuineness that is unmistakeable grounding their play. A husband and wife team can certainly telegraph their collective love for the music--and the sheer fun they have playing together. This one does it better than most.

The two are definitely experienced, and surround themselves with music in many different ways. Shannon has her own podcast, Irish Music Stories, and she?s also the co-founder of Boston?s Celtic music fest, which undoubtedly expanded her vision and abilities in the field.

Matt is front man for another band, the "surf-rock" Electric Heaters, and performs with a wide range of bands and musicians when he?s not playing with Shannon. Each an accomplished musician in their own right, the blend of the two is a true celebration of musical talent?dosed with a wholesome affection for the Celtic sound. It?s a pleasure to hear them play.

The couple?s Christmas song collection is filled with a little bit of everything. You?ll find fresh holiday fare as well as traditional favorites like ?O Little Town of Bethlehem? and ?It Came Upon the Midnight Clear? to sing along to. Irish music lovers will appreciate the jigs and reels that are included in the mixture, and there?s certainly enough here to fill a holiday party to the brim with some good cheer.

Don?t miss ?Julius the Christmas Cat??it couldn?t be any sweeter, and is sure to be a favorite for those who love their feline friends. Nothing like a cute little "story song" to get in the holiday spirit! Other notable tracks in this collection include ?Christmas in Mt. Horeb? and ?Wexford Carol,? but there really isn?t a bad track on the compilation.

There?s 13 tracks offered here, and listeners who love the flute will really be pleased, as it appears often on these tracks. Soft harmonies and easy strumming on the guitar are other hallmarks of what this holiday album is all about. There?s little doubt this will have a place in any rotation of Christmas music where an updated Celtic sound is welcomed.

Hang the Holley: Sharon Shannon

Welcome to Hang the Holly. I'll introduce you to SHARON SHANNON as we take an inside look at artists in the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast.    "Little Christmas" is the final episode of 2020. It features Christmas music from The Jig Is Up, Cynthia Shelhart, Steel Clover, Abbots Cross, Liz Madden, Laura MacKenzie, Reilly, Sharon Shannon, deCeadaoin, Tiffany Schaefer, Emish, Stephanie Claussen, Celtic Woman, Runa, The Selkie Girls   The show is generously brought to you by the Patrons of the Celtic Christmas Podcast on Patreon. Please show your Celtic Christmas Cheer, make a pledge to support the show. You will find milestones on Patreon which will effectively launch this show in 2021.   If you enjoy the show, you can rate the show or post comments on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcatcher.    Subscribe to the podcast at CelticChristmasMusic.net.   And now on to Sharon Shannon   Playing the accordion puts you in a unique category in terms of making music, and Sharon Shannon is one of the artists that has that distinction. Interestingly, although she can and does play Irish music, her career has continually spanned many different musical genres, always bringing her own style and background along with her for the ride. She is an experienced and dedicated musician, and has worked with some huge names in the industry. Among the people/bands she has recorded and performed with, you?ll find well-respected (and well-known!) Irish names like Sinead O?Connor, The Chieftains, Shane McGowan, and even Bono. In keeping with her genre-jumping style though, you?ll also see her name has appeared alongside other musical heavyweights, like Jackson Browne and Wille Nelson. As if that isn?t testament enough to Shannon?s musical abilities, she has also collaborated with John Prine, Natalie McMaster, and even Japan?s Kodo Drummers!   Good musicians are always eager to expand their circle and play with other talented people, and this is something that defines Sharon Shannon. It is also something that has allowed her to grow, and that has seasoned her as a musical artist. From classical, to Cajun, to rap, Shannon has embraced all forms of music and in turn, they have informed her approach and style along the way. Interestingly, the Irish influence always does seem to shine through though, no matter who she has paired herself with!   Shannon has a well-rounded selection of albums, but with the holidays quickly approaching, nothing is more appropriate than than the Christmas single, ?Christmas Time Again?, which features her accordion play front and center. It?s a nice, jolly romp?a bit more updated than the old, standard carols--but with the same spirit of fun. Pick this one up to add something different to your holiday playlist, or to gift to a friend or relative that loves expanding their collection of Christmas music. After all, there?s always a little bit of room for the accordion?right?   Find out more about Sharon Shannon at sharonshannon.com   If you hear music you love in the Celtic Christmas Podcast, then support the artists. Hang the Holly: Screaming Orphans

Welcome to Hang the Holly. I'll introduce you to SCREAMING ORPHANS as we take an inside look at artists in the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast.    "The Snows That Melt the Soonest" is the 4th episode of 2020 and show #58. It features Christmas music from Runa, Stephanie Claussen, David Pedrick, Matt & Shannon Heaton, Steel Clover, Mark O'Connor, Marc Gunn, deCeadaoin, Andrew D. Huber, The Rogues, Sheri O'Meara, Abbots Cross, Reilly, Screaming Orphans, Prydein, The Jig Is Up!.   The show is generously brought to you by the Patrons of the Celtic Christmas Podcast on Patreon. Please show your Celtic Christmas Cheer, make a pledge to support the show.   If you enjoy the show, you can rate the show or post comments on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcatcher.  Subscribe to the podcast at CelticChristmasPodcast.com.   And now on to Screaming Orphans   This four-person, all-women band hails from County Donegal, Ireland, and despite the loneliness that is hinted at by their chosen name?they are actually all sisters?with parents! As a matter-of-fact, their Mam used to be the band?s singer, and their Da was their engineer and manager before they struck out on their own to tour. The combination of leaving their parents behind, the ?screaming? sounds that come with four girls living in an active household, and the fact that a school they attended actually was (previously) an orphanage all gelled together to create this catchy moniker for the group. It?s one that is not easily forgotten!   The girls started music young, eventually evolving into a pop rock band in their teens, and over time they just continued to blossom. The band began performing locally, and their circle quickly began to expand. Before long the ladies were chosen to play at a concert in Kildare, where known names such as Christy Moore and Sinead O?Connor were also performing. O?Connor chose the four to to tour with her as her backup singers after this, and they also opened up for the artist on the Gospel Oak Tour. This extended into other opportunities, including touring with Babba Maal, and recording tracks with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell, and the Chieftains.   Since those days, the Screaming Orphans have become a well-known band in their own right, appearing on both the iTunes World Music charts and the Billboard World Albums charts, among many other accolades. They have put out 15 albums over the years ? all their own one-of-a-kind recipe of pop/rock with Celtic influence, and this year they are releasing a Christmas single, "Song We Used To Sing? for the holiday season.   The single reflects the unusual time we find ourselves in this holiday?often isolated from our loved ones at the time we are used to gathering for storytelling, sharing memories, and celebrating Christmas. It calls forth a nostalgic feel with it?s simple arrangement and lovely harmonies. An original track, the band collaborated with songwriter John Spillane to craft a holiday song that focuses in on warm memories and togetherness at a time these ideas are most often highlighted. It?s a pretty song with a message of peace and hope that helps ease the sting of being apart at Christmastime. Not only is it especially timely for 2020, but this thoughtful tune will hold up well for future holiday seasons.   Find out more about Screaming Orphans at screamingorphans.com.   If you hear music you love in the Celtic Christmas Podcast, then support the artists. Welcome to Hang the Holly. I'll introduce you to THE ROGUES as we take an inside look at artists in the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. Huber, The Rogues, Sheri O'Meara, Abbots Cross, Reilly, Prydein, The Jig Is Up!.   The show is generously brought to you by the Patrons of the Celtic Christmas Podcast on Patreon. This Celtic band didn?t stay put in Houston for long though, and soon they were off--traveling all over the U.S., and even abroad. They?ve performed in Canada, Scotland, and Greece, among other places over the years, as well as providing entertainment on a number of different cruise ships. This great mixture of experiences has allowed the band the opportunity to truly hone their live shows, and put a shine on their ability to play together in a variety of different contexts. It has also given them a great deal of expertise in terms of playing Celtic tunes.   The Rogues are no amateurs when it comes to playing their instruments either, and band members have won prestigious music competitions, including first place in the World Pipe Band Championships in Grade III in 1998. If pressed to describe them, you could say they take their music seriously, but they don?t take themselves too seriously, which results in a nice mash up of outstanding musicianship and good fun?it really works out well. Plus, you know a band is not messing around when they wind up with their own tartan in the Scottish Register of Tartans. That?s dedication to the Celtic genre at a deep level.   You can?t help but notice a full pipe sound and a lot of percussion when you listen to this band play, but they are also capable of music that pulls at the heartstrings. The variety of instruments, arrangements, and pairings keeps things interesting, no matter how familiar the tune. This is especially evident on The Rogues 2013 Christmas album, Hellbound Sleigh, where you?ll hear tried-and-true favorites such as ?We Wish You a Merry Christmas? and ?God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen? in a very different light. Be sure to listen to the "O Holy Night / Ave Maria? track, which has an almost haunting feel to it?in the best possible way. And?don?t miss "Jingle Bells/Good King Wenceslas? for a rousing take on this classic that showcases the pipes front and center.   The best part about this festive album though is the fact that there are also a few tracks you won?t find in every Christmas collection, making it a great pick for your music rotation this holiday season. Keep it all to yourself and enjoy listening at home, or ship it over to a friend or family member that needs a little bit ?o cheer in the stocking.   Find out more about The Rogues at therogues.com    If you hear music you love, then support the artists. Hang the Holly: RUNA

Welcome to Hang the Holly. I'll introduce you to Runa as we take an inside look at artists in the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. Huber, The Rogues, Sheri O'Meara, Abbots Cross, Reilly, Prydein, The Jig Is Up!.     The show is generously brought to you by the Patrons of the Celtic Christmas Podcast on Patreon. Please show your Celtic Christmas Cheer, make a pledge to support the show.   If you enjoy the show, you can rate the show or post comments on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcatcher.  Subscribe to the podcast at CelticChristmasPodcast.com.   And now on to Runa   As holiday albums go, The Tide of Winter is much more than a collection of standard Christmas tunes. Each of the 13 tracks here offers something a little bit unconventional. The first track, "Brightest and Best / Gaudete / Noel Nouvelet? starts out with voice as instrument, blended harmonies softly wafting around before things pick up speed midway through alongside a percussive beat. RUNA seems to enjoy challenging the listener by defying the more typical patterns one's ear has learned to expect in favor of going where the muse leads them. For example, you?ve never heard ?O Come, O Come, Emmanuel? done like this before! Those who enjoy a different take on things will want to pick this album up to go alongside their more tried-and-true favorites. It will provide just the right amount of contrast?as well as something to keep things interesting.   Track 3, "Christ Child Lullaby / Dún do Shúil? offers a hymn/lullaby that's blended in three languages; English, Irish Gaelic, and the original Scots Gaelic. This provides an additional soothing feel alongside the comforting rhythm of the lullaby itself. It?s a nice take, a simple arrangement, and an interesting inclusion. Very easy on the ears. Juxtapose that track with the next, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen?, which features a funky vibe and a perky, upbeat sound and you have the perfect way to sum up this grouping of songs?non-traditional, yet intriguing!   It?s very tough to be experimental?without being too experimental. After all, part of the charm of holiday music is the fact that it?s familiar. That said, RUNA doesn?t abandon the thread entirely, they merely embellish on it in their own way?which seems to be a great way to compromise. In all, the band isn?t intent on exploring just for the sake of being different. You get the sense that they are doing it to create depth, and to be true to the perspective that has developed within them as musicians.   Their ?Instrumental Medley? both pays homage to Christmas music and showcases the skill of the musicians, and while ?Silent Night? maybe isn?t as predictable as the standard radio holiday version, it?s every bit as lovely?as well as a nod to the Austrian ?Stille Nacht?. The band?s liner notes sum this choice up well, saying, There is something magical about returning to the roots of such an iconic carol and to rediscover the beauty and depth in its simplicity.? And, indeed, there is.   This album is perfect for those looking to expand their collection of holiday music, without having things become too repetitive. You?ll find fresh arrangements throughout, and enough holiday spirit to go around the table?twice.   Find out more about Runa at runamusic.com.   If you hear music you love, then support the artists. Hang the Holley: Stephanie Claussen

Welcome to Hang the Holly. I'll introduce you to Stephanie Claussen as we take an inside look at artists in the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast.    We Wish You A Merry Christmas is the 3rd episode of 2020 and show #57. It features Christmas music from Laura MacKenzie, Emish, Steel Clover, Seamus Kennedy, Stephanie Claussen, David Pedrick, The Barra MacNeils, Jennifer Cutting's Ocean Orchestra, Haggis Rampant, Jed Marum, The Rogues, Marc Gunn & Mikey Mason, Andrew D. Huber, Coyote Run, Angus Mohr & Friends, Mark O'Connor.   The show is generously brought to you by the patrons of this podcast on Patreon. Please show your support.   If you enjoy the show, you can rate the show or post comments on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcatcher.  Subscribe to the podcast at CelticChristmasPodcast.com.   And now Stephanie Claussen   If you love harp music, why not choose to listen to a proven talent? Not only have Stephanie Claussen?s skills been recognized with the title of 2018 US National Scottish Harp Champion, but this Minnesota-based harpist also runs her own harp studio, and travels to play for audiences all over the upper Midwest area of the United States. Claussen is classically trained, and the Celtic influences are easy to hear throughout her style. She is crystal-clear and very enjoyable to listen to on the strings of this enchanting instrument.   Claussen has released five solo albums, starting in 2002. She has also collaborated with other artists throughout her career. Since Celtic songs are her specialty, it makes sense that she would craft a Christmas album. After all, what other instrument brings forth the true magic of the holiday more than the harp? The mood that this music calls forth is at once elegant and otherworldly; especially at the hands of an expert harpist. There really isn?t anything quite like it. Not only is there the magnificent Celtic flavor, there?s also an old-fashioned, medieval charm to it all. It makes for a nice pairing.   On Light So Brilliant: Carols and Tunes for Christmas, her collection of Christmas music offers 15 tracks which will add warmth and delight to any holiday gathering. This solo harp album would also be perfect to enjoy by the fire, or while sipping a hot cuppa and taking in the majesty of a fully decorated tree. You?ll hear holiday favorites such as ?We Three Kings? and ?God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen?? but that?s not all. Claussen also stocks the track listings with a delicate rendition of "Bouree d?Avignon? and other rewarding offerings, providing a full spectrum of beautiful music to round out any holiday music collection. Whether you want to keep it all to yourself or give this album as a gift, it?s well worth a listen!   Although this artist has just one Christmas album, really any of her albums would mix in well with a holiday vibe. Some instruments just have that ?festive? feel to them, and the harp is definitely one of them. It puts a little spring in the step and happiness in the heart?which is what we call holiday spirit!   Find out more about Stephanie Claussen at www.stephanieclaussen.com.   If you hear music you love, then support the artists. Hang the Holley: Laura MacKenzie

Welcome to Hang the Holly. You'll meet Laura MacKenzie this week as we take an inside look into the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast.      The The Holly and The Ivy is already getting a ton of downloads. Over 1000 in less than a week after it came out. So I have high hopes that all of these incredible artists will special attention this holiday season.   Show #56 features Christmas music from The Irish Rovers, Steel Clover, Matthew Young, Emish, Spencer & Beane, Laura MacKenzie, Cantus Lunaris, The Jig Is Up!, Andrew D. Huber, Rosmerta, Haggis Rampant, A Shamrock in Kudzu, Sarah Marie Mullen, The Selkie Girls, The Gothard Sisters.   If you enjoy the show, please do all of these artists a favor. Share it with your friends on social or in your community.   You can also rate the podcast or post comments on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcatcher. And of course, subscribe to the podcast at CelticChristmasPodcast.com.   And now Laura MacKenzie   It?s not hard to believe that Laura MacKenzie has Irish dance in her background ? you can almost hear it when she plays her music! This talented artist has not only been the recipient of some coveted fellowships, but she also has her own designated namesake ?day? in Minnesota because of her work in traditional Irish music. (In case you are wondering, it?s November 22nd.) Laura has been mentored by some wonderful musicians on everything from button accordion, to Irish flute, to Scottish smallpipes. Yes?she?s definitely one of those Celtic artists that plays numerous instruments! She has also been awarded some heavy-hitting titles, such as a Master Folk Artist, a "Celtic music wizard?, and a "High priestess of Celtic music?. It?s doubtful that any of these monikers were handed out lightly!   If you?re looking to lay in something unique in terms of holiday music, this lady presents some fun options. Yuletide Bagpipes is exactly what it sounds like?a nice collection of tunes, featuring a wide array of pipes. You?ll hear border pipes, smallpipes, lowland pipes, medieval greatpipes, and even some cornemuse. It?s hard not to feel festive with this type of music wafting through the air. The album begins with Joy to the World/I Saw Three Ships and offers 15 bright tracks that end with her version of Auld Lang Syne.   Celtic Holiday is another one of MacKenzie?s holiday albums; this one features 14 tracks with many favorites peppered throughout, such as ?Hark, the Herald Angels Sing?, ?God Rest Ye Marry Gentlemen?, and ?What Child is This/The Greensleeves Jigs. There?s an especially haunting version of ?O Come, O Come Immanuel? that is almost meditative. Just lovely. It?s always interesting to see what various artists do with the arrangement of tunes that are familiar to almost everyone. Each has their own take on how to present it, and this is especially true of holiday music like these tracks.   For those who can?t decide which of these sounds better, the obvious compromise would be to go with ?Heigh Ho, The Green Holly?, which is a collection of Celtic Christmas music that was selected from both of the previous albums. It really is a good mix of the two. This would probably also make a great gift if you know someone who loves the pipes and is in need of a bit of holiday cheer this season. Quite honestly, we could probably all use a bit of that in 2020. Take a look at the track lists and see if one of these albums piques your interest, or tune in and hear Laura MacKenzie for yourself on show #56: The Holly and The Ivy. Hang the Holley: Liz Madden

Welcome to Hang the Holly. I'll introduce you to LIZ MADDEN as we take an inside look at artists in the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. And now on to Liz Madden   Irish-born singer Liz Madden is a classically trained vocalist with multiple artistic talents. Not only does she have a cache of her own solo albums, but she is an actress and musical theater performer as well. In addition, she has done voiceover work and it?s easy to see why?her gentle, bright, clear voice is a pleasure to listen to, whether she is speaking or singing. Madden has delved deeply into studying the things she is interested in, and holds a Masters degree in music, and she is working toward one in theology as well. Her list of accomplishments really does go on and on, and they include everything from songwriting credits for film and television, to producing a live show, to winning multiple awards throughout the course of her career.   Such a full and total immersion in the arts shows fierce passion and a dedication to creating, and this is apparent in Madden?s musical history. She has contributed to 12 albums, and is actively involved in collaborating with other musical artists on a regular basis. Her albums tend to favor simple arrangements that allow her beautiful voice to be the centerpiece, with instruments serving as a support, rather than the central focus. It works well, and Madden?s voice is definitely worthy of having a place that is front and center. She has certainly earned it, developing her voice as a well-honed instrument in its own right. Not all singers are blessed with such an even measure of talent and passion, but this is a singer that certainly has a heaping spoonful of both.   Her holiday album, "Liz Madden?s Christmas Celebration" offers nearly an hour of music that ranges from delights such as the French carol Noel Nouvelet to some of the more expected holiday favorites like Joy to the World, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The satisfying mixture of simple arrangements and a classically trained voice make this singer's holiday album a perfect choice for the season. A well thought-out grouping of 17 tracks provides a solid Christmas soundtrack that would make a terrific gift?or would blend in well with nearly any rotation of holiday music you may already own. Whatever you do, be sure not to miss Madden?s version of Silent Night?it?s a song that was meant to be covered by a vocalist with her range, and she does it beautifully, hitting those high notes with confidence and clarity.   Find out more about Liz Madden at LizMadden.co.   If you hear music you love in the Celtic Christmas Podcast, then support the artists. Hang the Holly: Celtic Woman

Hang the Holly is an inside look into the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. The first teaser episode of the 2020 season came out last week. I want to share a little bit about one of the artists in the show, namely Celtic Woman.   But first, the first episode of 2020 is show #55. It features Celtic Christmas music from eight Celtic artists with Christmas holiday music, including: Angus Mohr, Don Grieve, The Irish Rovers, Marc Gunn, Alexander James Adams, The Wee Heavies, Matthew Young, Celtic Woman.   Show #55 is a shorter episode. Most shows will be about an hour long. They also no available on Spotify or YouTube. So if you want to hear those shows, please subscribe the podcast at CelticChristmasPodcast.com.   Let's get on with the show.   Are you searching for a GRAMMY-nominated, multi-platinum, Celtic music group with a decidedly feminine sound to fill your home with warmth during the Christmas season? If so, you don?t have to look any further than Celtic Woman. Many fans of Irish music already adore this celebrated band, and with several Christmas albums to choose from, there?s something for everyone to listen to during the upcoming holidays! Since the band?s debut in 2005, this group has had a PBS special, performed at the White House, and even appeared on ABC-TV's Dancing with the Stars. All this from a group that was originally created for a single event! That tells you a little something about how special they are?   Although there is plenty of traditional appeal in Celtic Woman?s sound, they also bring a more contemporary flavor into the mix. This can be ideal for those who are searching for something fresh for the holiday season. You won?t have to worry about it being too modern, but you will hear an updated take on many of your seasonal favorites, and you may even hear some new tunes too! This, and the fact that they are an all-female group, might make a CD or DVD of theirs a perfect Christmas gift for someone on your list as well. There are a number of them out there ? 15 CDs and 11 DVDs to choose from. Four of these CDs are dedicated to Christmas music.   Celtic Woman's A Christmas Celebration album made it onto Billboard's World Music Chart in 2006, and it remained there for 112 weeks in a row, so that would definitely be one to check out if you haven?t already. It?s the earliest offering of Christmas music by the band, and it was followed by Home for Christmas in 2012. The Best of Christmas was released in 2017, and their last holiday album was The Magic of Christmas in 2019, featuring songs such as 'The Wexford Carol? and ?Deck the Halls?, among others.   Fans of the band might find a bit of solace in listening to these CDs since Celtic Woman's much-anticipated 2020 tour has been cancelled due to COVID-19. While nothing is quite like live music, unfortunately this year a recording will have to do. New listeners can opt to add yet another layer to their Celtic Christmas spirit with music by these lovely ladies. Their angelic voices make the Christmas music shine, and each of these CDs has a decent number of tracks on them. It makes for a good introduction to the band?s sound, and will be a super add to the rotation of holiday tunes each year going forward.   What better way is there to celebrate the end to this long year than hearing Celtic Christmas songs drifting through the house as you decorate?    To get a taste of the band?s sound and their Christmas songs, be sure to subscribe to the Celtic Christmas Podcast. The show is free though it is supported by Celtic music fans on Patreon. I have featured Celtic Woman many times on past episodes. And they will be on again on future episodes.    Subscribe at CelticChristmasPodcast.com . Nollaig shona daoibh.

Hang the Holley: The Irish Rovers

Welcome to Hang the Holly. This is an inside look into the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. It features Christmas music from The Irish Rovers, Steel Clover, Matthew Young, Emish, Spencer & Beane, Laura MacKenzie, Cantus Lunaris, The Jig Is Up!, Andrew D. Known for their Irish folk music?and their longevity?this band has produced more than 45 albums that people have enjoyed throughout the world, many times over.   If you?re searching for a good batch of Irish Christmas tunes, this Canadian band delivers a number of different collections to choose from. Piano for Christmas Time is a wonderful album of instrumental holiday music. The blend of songs is perfect for holiday dinners or tree trimming, or whenever you are looking to add a bit of Irish flavor to the mood of the day. This 10-track collection finishes off with a fun Christmas Eve medley, blending favorites like "Jingle Bells", "Frosty the Snowman", and "Here Comes Santa Claus" together to help get everyone in a festive mood.   Merry Merry Time of Year is another collection of Christmas music that provides 15 lovelies to round out any holiday collection, such as ?Christ the King? and ?Must Be Santa?. Also available?and a great choice if you're in the mood to kick back and watch a concert--be sure to try out their DVD, ?The Irish Rovers Christmas?, which showcases the band (and guests!) at Chatham Ontario's historic Capitol Theatre, playing live. Not only will you hear great music, but the 2+ hours that were recorded also feature some sneak-peeks behind the scenes and other cool extras.   Those searching for a recognizable list of Christmas classics?Irish style?would do well to invest in ?The Irish Rovers Songs of Christmas?, which kicks out some tried-and-true favorites. Included on this album are tracks like ?Away in a Manger?, ?We Three Kings?, and ?Silent Night?, among others. And don?t miss the band?s fun take on ?Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer?, which makes you want to sing right along with them!   There?s something to be said for bands like The Irish Rovers, who have stood the test of time. Groups like this have truly developed a sound that is all their own. Playing together for so many years results in a seamless blending of musicianship, and the band is filled to the brim with Irish energy and enthusiasm. Whether you?re looking to round out a collection of Christmas music or want to share some Celtic-style tunes with friends or family as a gift, these albums make a terrific pick.    To get a taste of this band?s take on holiday music, you can now listen to show #56: The Holly and The Ivy.   The show is free to enjoy, as usual. Help Launch the Celtic Christmas Podcast 2019

Greetings my friends,

I'm made a small change with the 2019 Celtic Christmas Podcast. Every year, I've paid out of pocket to share this podcast with you. But it requires a lot of extra time and money to release episodes.

I decided I need a means to fund the creation, promotion and production of the show, just like I have with the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

And so I started a Patreon for the Celtic Christmas Podcast.

You can support Celtic Christmas music by making a pledge of as little as $1 per episode. There won't be more than four episodes this year depending on how much time I can make to create the show.

I will launch the 2019 podcast when I successfully raise $100 per episode over on Patreon.

I would greatly appreciate your generous support of the podcast as well as the artists on the Celtic Christmas Podcast.

Thank you in advance

Become a Patron now!

First, I want to let you know that you can buy our Celtic Christmas compilation CD on iTunes for just $4.99. This a great way for you to support this podcast if you're not already a Patron of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast

And if that's not good enough, you will find Celtic Heartstrings in our store. These are necklaces and Christmas ornaments made from the broken strings of my heart... I mean autoharp. You'll find several designs in my store at MageRecords.com. Follow the link in the shownotes.

I just published a quick and easy Guide to the best Irish & Celtic Christmas music of 2018 on my Celtfather podcast. You can listen at Celtfather.com.

Finally, if you want even more Celtic Christmas music, I have a playlist you can listen to Celtic Christmas music on Spotify. And I would love to hear your song recommendations.

CELTIC CHRISTMAS NEWS

Welcome to the Celtic Christmas Podcast, helping you celebrate Christmas with Celtic musicians.

My name is Marc Gunn. I'm the host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast and I'm also a Celtic musician. It looks like you will get THREE episodes of the Celtic Christmas Podcast this year. That's because I decided to do something bold and scary for this episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. I'm gonna share my Christmas album, in its entirety, for free.

I released my album Celtic Christmas Greetings in 2014. It's a mix of traditional Christmas songs, some Celtic Christmas covers and some original Celtic Christmas songs. It's a fun and beautiful album, if I do say so myself. I want you to hear it.

Before we get started, I want to let you know that if you enjoy the music, you can buy this CD in my online store. If you buy it on Bandcamp, you'll also get a digital copy of the album along with the physical CD. Use the coupon code CELTICCHRISTMAS2018 and you'll save 15% on your physical CD purchase.

If you want more Celtic Christmas music, there are 49 episodes for this. Give 'em a listen!

-

I hope you enjoy this podcast. Again, if you did, please buy the album. You can get it on CD Baby, Amazon Music, Google Play, iTunes, and everywhere music is sold online. But you can save 15% on the physical CD if you head on over to my Bandcamp store at magerecords.com

Finally, if you want even more Christmas music, I have a couple playlists on Spotify. One is Celtic Christmas music featuring many of the bands you heard here. Another is Fun Christmas Songs for Kids & Families. You'll find links to both in the shownotes.

CELTIC CHRISTMAS NEWS

Welcome to the Celtic Christmas Podcast, helping you celebrate Christmas with Celtic musicians. I'm happy to share this bonus episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. I was only planning one episode this year, in December. But this show is brought to you through the generosity of the Patrons of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. We hit milestone on Patreon. And now you will get TWO episodes of this podcast.

I also decided to turn this normally 30 minute show into an hour-long special focusing on the music. That means I'm gonna talk less, and share more music. So let's get started...

First, I want to let you know that you can buy our Celtic Christmas compilation album on iTunes for just $4.99 or buy it on CD Baby. This a great way for you to support this podcast if you're not already a Patron of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

And if that's not good enough, you will find Celtic Heartstrings in our store. These are necklaces and Christmas ornaments made from the broken strings of my heart... I mean autoharp. You'll find several designs in my store at MageRecords.com. Follow the link in the shownotes.

Finally, if you want even more Celtic Christmas music, I have a playlist. You can listen to Celtic Christmas music on Spotify. And I would love to hear your song recommendations.

Out of this combination they have developed a sound that is both familiar and fresh. Strong believers in letting the music tradition live and breathe through sensitive interpretation, Vicki and Jonny allow the melody to sing without any constraints.

Be entranced by the haunting nyckelharpa, amazed at the cow horn (one of the worlds earliest communication devices) and meet some of the bagpipes that didn?t come from Scotland.

Compared to the Pogues with a frontman Kyf Brewer who sings like Ronnie Drew with a cold, the band has garnered many a dedicated fan. Its not uncommon to hear the audience bellow "Joooose!" as the band takes the stage.

---

22:20
"Always Believe" by Celtic Cross
from Single

Out of New York City, Celtic Cross is the legendary seven-piece band fronted by Kathleen Fee, a talented singer-songwriter and her brothers John on accordion & Kenny Vesey on fiddle. They are joined by a group of accomplished and skilled NYC players Wally Ensor on guitar, Pat Dineen on bass/keys, Frankie McCormick on mandolin/banjo, and Ryan Cavan on drums.

Products of Irish parents, traditional Irish music roots, and American pop radio, Celtic Cross puts it all together in a very different way than what you will hear from most Celtic acts. The band?s music tells great stories using the traditional on top of sassy pop, alt-country and funk playing. They are a band?s band around the NYC Irish scene and will remind you of Fleetwood Mac or the B-52s with a heavy dose of Saw Doctors or Stockton?s Wing.

"Logs to Burn" by Golden Bough
from Winter's Dance

An Old World carol states, ?Good fortune attend each merry man's friend to do the best that he may, forgetting all wrongs in carol and song to drive the cold winter away.? With that in mind, Golden Bough has created 3 volumes of Christmas/Holiday music, incorporating Old World Carols and other Celtic songs of Christmas and Winter with their own compositions, written especially for the Yuletide season.

Out of Modesto, CA, there are no new comers to the current Celtic trend, Golden Bough (founded in 1980) has been bringing their Winter Concerts to family audiences far and wide. These modern-day minstrels have traveled the world over performing their own brand of Celtic music, drawn from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, The Isle of Man, French Brittany and even Galicia (in Spain).

Bagpipe Celtic Christmas Music #37

A new season of Celtic Christmas music begins with new episodes of the podcast featuring Celtic Christmas songs and tunes from The Rogues, Wicked Tinkers, Haggis Rampant, Bonnie Rideout, Angus Mohr, Rathkeltair. www.celticchristmaspodcast.com

It is time once again to launch my Celtic Christmas Podcast. This is a 30 minute show where I play Celtic Christmas music and share a little bit about the Celtic bands on the show. If you have a Celtic band and want to submit music, visit our website, and I'll tell you more at the end of the show.

If you have a Celtic podcast and would like to share your Christmas show with my audience, please contact me at [email protected]

My two-hour Best Bagpipe Music special of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was so popular earlier this month, I thought a show of Bagpipe Celtic Christmas music would be a great way to kick off the holiday season.

This Week?s Celtic Christmas Music

"Hellbound Sleigh" by The Rogues
from Hellbound Sleigh

Founded in Houston in 1994, The Rogues created a new genre of Celtic music with exceptionally, well-played pipes and driving percussion. The band's sound ranges from traditional pipes and drums to innovative textures incorporating whistles, keyboard and guitar, as well as many percussion instruments. Always present in The Rogues' music is that spirit that endears them to their audience. From technical precision to soaring melodies, a Rogues album and performance will move you to tears and get you dancing immediately afterwards.

"Coventry Carol" by Wicked Tinkers
from Slainte Happy Holidays

Pioneers of the growing Tribal Celtic movement, the Wicked Tinkers have been playing haunting, heart-pounding bagpipes and irresistible tribal drums as a professional touring band since 1995. With the addition, of the mesmerizing drone of the Australian didgeridoo and Bronze Age Irish horn, the magic was complete. Sit back and be transported to an earlier time in Scotland and Ireland, when battle cries filled the air and strange, unheard-of creatures roamed the night. Or better yet, get on your feet and let your body move to ancient rhythms and forgotten sounds.

"Kirkin' the Midwinter" by Haggis Rampant
from The Silver Glens

The first stirrings of Haggis Rampant appeared in the fall of 2000 at the first annual Louisiana Renaissance Festival. Steve was feeding his renfest habit while looking for places to practice on his loud instrument. His wife Pam played her bodhran with Steve on the last day of the 2000 run, and, much to his chagrin, the show was a hit. The group was completed with the addition of their daughter Gillian a few years later. Gillian has shown a talent for writing exquisite harmonies on the bagpipes and the good-natured father/daughter competitiveness makes them a fun team to watch.

"Christmas Carousing/Ale Is Dear/New Christmas" by Bonnie Rideout
from A Scottish Christmas

Bonnie Rideout is an award winning Scottish fiddler. Her CD, "A Scottish Christmas" became a New York Times ?Top Ten Holiday Best Seller?. She celebrates Christmas with this enthusiastic holiday performance that she takes on the road each year, playing at performing arts centers and large theaters nationwide in November and December. Rideout performs along with the Scottish Christmas Ensemble - a group of internationally renowned musicians including the City of Washington Pipe Band and dancers from the Scottish Highlands! Rideout and crew perform with spirit and gusto. This performance features Eric Rigler on Scottish smallpipes.

"I Saw Three Ships" by Angus Mohr & Friends
from A Christmas Pageant

Just as watery mist remakes the world, and whisky remakes the man, Angus Mohr revitalizes the brogue of traditional Celtic music with an American blues accent and rejuvenates rock ?n roll?s broad spectrum with bagpipe and pennywhistles. No one is ever going to mistake Angus Mohr for a cover band. Sure, they play songs like ?Foggy Dew,? the 1916 Easter Rising ballad, and ?Whisky in the Jar,? a sixteenth century tale of love and betrayal, and their set list is peppered with songs penned by Dylan, Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash, and the Ramones. But you?ve never heard ?Ring of Fire? or ?I Wanna Be Sedated? until you?ve heard it with the pipes? spiraling keen.

The 2008 album from Angus Mohr is a departure from their usual sound! This Christmas album features an eclectic mix of styles, including everything from medieval carols to Chuck Berry!

"Carols on 45" by Rathkeltair
from Something Good for Christmas

Rathkeltair blends compelling and catchy original songs with tight, driving straight-ahead rock-n-roll, while never forgetting its Celtic roots.
Based in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Rathkeltair has been on the road full-time since 2003. Highly regarded for its extraordinary energy, showmanship and professionalism, Rathkeltair enjoys a loyal and rapidly expanding community of friends and fans.

In 2011, they released their album "Something Good for Christmas". It features over 45 minutes of Christmas classics , Original songs and tunes done Rathkeltair style for the holiday season!

This Week?s Celtic Christmas Music

"Christmas Waltz" by The Brigands' Folie
from Twain
Brigands' Folie is an exciting acoustic duo playing traditional Irish, Scottish, English, and colonial American music together around the Midwest since 2005. The band's mission is to educate the public about the lives and stories of 18th & 19th Century settlers, soldiers, and sailors through music of the period.

"Jolly Old St. Nicholas" by The Gothard Sisters
from Christmas

The Gothard Sisters are three young Celtic and classical musicians who write new arrangements of traditional celtic and christmas favorites. They are emerging young artists and dancers from the pacific northwest and play several instruments each, creating a warm sound of acoustic progressive celtic-classical folk.

"Winter's Day" by Mithril
from Winter's Day

Mithril's unique progressive style has its roots in traditional Celtic music but moves far beyond that, weaving such diverse influences as American folk, classical, and Middle Eastern melodies in...to their full tapestry of sound.

"On Christmas Night" by Cherish the Ladies
from On Christmas Night

Celebrating 28 Years of Music Making, Cherish the Ladies is an American all-female Irish-American super group. The band began as a concert series in New York in January 1985, the brainchild of Mick Moloney who wanted to showcase the brightest female musicians in America in what had been a male-dominated scene. The series opened to sold out concerts. Under the leadership of the dynamic and irrepressible Joanie Madden on flutes and whistles, they have grown from a one-time concert concept to an Irish traditional music sensation and are the most successful and sought after Irish-American group in Celtic music.

"Christmas day in the morning/I saw three ships/On Christmas night/New years day" by Bonnie Rideout
from A Scottish Christmas, The Celebration

Bonnie Rideout is an award winning Scottish fiddler. On stages from Scotland?s Edinburgh International Festival to America?s Kennedy Center, Bonnie Rideout?s unique style of Scottish fiddling has charmed audiences across the globe. Bonnie has been featured on the BBC, CBS, NPR?s Performance Today, and Morning Edition. Her A Scottish Christmas CD became a New York Times ?Top Ten Holiday Best Seller?. Its success prompted a touring show that has sold out halls across North America for over a decade. In 2007, the Mel Bay Publishing Company credited Bonnie as one of America?s top ten most influential traditional fiddlers of the 20th century.

"Have You Heard" by The Irish Rovers
from Merry Merry Time Of Year

The Irish Rovers is a Canadian Irish folk group created in 1963 and named after the traditional song "The Irish Rover." The group is best known for their international television series, contributing to the popularization of Irish Music in North America. All band members hail from Ireland, however the group was formed in Toronto, Canada. Since then there have been over 40 albums in North America with more internationally. ?Have You Heard? is a beautiful Christmas tune with an old world sound, but like with all the Irish Rovers songs, you?ll want to sing along. It?s written by George Millar who has written most of the Rovers? original music over the years.

"Christmas Pipes" by Katie McMahon
from Celtic Christmas

Katie McMahon is an Irish singer from Dublin. She was a soloist with the original Riverdance troupe. Her recordings have largely featured traditional Irish songs, occasionally in the Irish language. She has released five critically acclaimed solo CDs: After the Morning, Shine, Celtic Christmas, St. Patrick's Day and Christmas Angels.

Celtic Christmas Music #23 with Pub Songs Podcast
