The reign of Queen Elizabeth II ends. Today in our English listening lesson we talk about why Queen Elizabeth II was so popular and we say our goodbyes.
Few people can lay claim to being able to shape history, and fewer still can lay claim to being able to shape history for so long. I know history has a habit of repeating itself, but I feel it is unlikely that we see another Queen Elizabeth II in the twilight years of the British commonwealth.
?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/conversations-in-english-queen-elizabeth/
Modern media shone a bright light on the British monarchy in recent years, and much of what we have discovered has been uncomfortable to watch. However, not so for Queen Elizabeth II and her mother. These ladies were different, dignified with a strong sense of duty to the British commonwealth. We will miss them both.

A letter, written in English by a teenage girl in Afghanistan, is the topic for today?s English listening practice. It?s a solemn reminder that there are many who are not as fortunate as us and that education is a gift that not everyone receives.
One thing that really struck me about this letter is how much it reminded me of studying history at school. How people, in the past, could not go to school because they were poor or because they had the wrong skin colour. That denying people an education was a "Thing of the past". To think some parts of the world are still like this is a reminder we still have a lot of work to do.

I hope this lesson helps you to learn English today. I also hope it makes you think about a little girl a thousand miles away.

In today?s English lesson, the conversation is a more natural, relaxed way of talking (I won?t be using academic vocabulary here, just talking in everyday English). Today I?m going to share some useful ideas and tips for learning English. You?ve come here to improve your language skills, so today I have some practical tips and a philosophical idea that will help you improve your English language learning.
?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/learn-english-language-efficiently/
If you want to learn English efficiently, then you need to focus on the following; settings goals and consistently working towards those goals. First, you need to set realistic goals, objectives that fit with your lifestyle and circumstances or you will change your lifestyle to accommodate. Next, you need to be consistent in working at achieving your goals, constantly working towards improvement.
Sounds simple, right? Goals and consistency. So why do so many language learners set unrealistic goals? You know the get excited, and I will watch a few "Learn English in 3 hours..." on YouTube and I?ll be speaking English fluently, type goals. And people who set these types of unrealistic expectations then double down and think cramming and binge watching or reading for a day will somehow make learning English happen.
The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and starting on the first one.Your brain is amazing, but language learning needs a lot of long-term memory training. This type of long-term memory storage gets activated through repetition and consistency. Today we explain why making regular "little and often" progress towards real objectives is a safer, more efficient approach to learning a language, and we give lots of examples and tips as we talk it through.

English language learners, especially people new to our way of learning, often ask what kind of English listening practice do I recommend listening to. The answer I nearly always give is to listen to something that interests you, something you would listen to in your own native language. Engaging and wanting to listen and hear the conversation is one of the biggest boosts you can give to your English listening practice. As you can guess, I?m back from my short Swiss holiday and it?s back to the business of great English language content. Today?s podcast is a juicy topic and should definitely make you stop and think!

There are a lot of ?big? questions in our lives; What makes us happy? What is love? Where do we come from? What is our purpose? And you may not think it just now, but up there at the top of the "life big question list" is, What happens when I die?
Most of us don?t spend a lot of time thinking about death. We are too young for it to seem relevant, or old enough that it scares us into not wanting to think about it. Unfortunately, death is one of the few guaranteed outcomes in our lives and it?s probably worth thinking about. For many people, religion and their beliefs help deal with the unknown. But what comfort is there for everyone else? Well, scientists are collecting some interesting and hopeful evidence that there is something beyond death. That should give some comfort to everyone, and I imagine the believers will smile and say, ?I told you so...?.

Today?s news in slow English is all about the future of living, maybe not for us but for our children. It?s not the headline news in the UK, that?s all about inflation, cost of living, who will run our country, which is all a little boring. So I?ve chosen a news story, off the beaten path, and it?s packed with interesting English phrases and vocabulary that is fun and interesting to know. The Line will tackle the challenges facing humanity in urban life today, and will shine a light on alternative ways to live.I think most of us have a pretty clear idea of what home is and the type of building we will live in. For most of us, it will be a house or a flat in a block of flats in a village, town or city. This is the way it?s been since the beginning. So what would you think about an alternative way of people living together? I can?t even imagine something different. The thought is so alien to me. So the news article I?ve used as the basis of today?s English lesson is definitely interesting and definitely thought provoking.

I covered the UK cost-of-living crisis in podcast 534, and if you haven?t listened to that one yet it would be a good follow on lesson to this one. We all have to work with money, deal with banks and loans. So understanding the common economic vocabulary used in everyday English is really worth learning. This is especially useful if you are looking to take an IELTS exam, as IELTS examiners like to hear money and statistical terms being used correctly and understood.
As with any language, understanding the context in which we use words will help you more quickly grasp their meaning. The English language has a lot of terms that are used in business and economics. Understanding the meaning and usage of these will help you communicate more effectively with others, as well as understand what they are talking about.

It?s the one thing we can?t get more of, unless you live in a sci-fi movie. We?re all busy. We all want to save time. And that?s what this idiom is about saving time by spending it wisely. Today?s idiom is one I used after a minor disaster in my garden. In this lesson we talk about English idioms, how native English speakers would use these idioms in everyday English. As always, there are lots of examples and an interesting story to help you remember the idiom and any unusual vocabulary.
The English language has lots of idioms that offer wisdom on how you invest your time or money. For example, ?penny wise and pound foolish,? which means that you?re being cheap when it comes to saving money, but that?s costing you more in the long run. If you spend a little time now to save lots later, then that?s not being penny wise and pound foolish

News is what somebody somewhere wants to suppress; all the rest is advertising. This change in the type of English language used is because news and magazines writers often use idioms and phrases to imply a meaning or an idea to make content engaging. They need to entertain the reader/listeners to make money! It?s the type of English you avoid in everyday conversations, because you would sound very stuffy and formal, and you probably don?t want your audience to work too hard understanding what you are trying to communicate.

Today our English listening practice topic is about depression, anti-depressants and serotonin. A recent research paper says serotonin has little or nothing to do with depression! So wait a minute, the primary treatment we have to help people with depression targets serotonin, and serotonin has little or nothing to do with depression. How could we possibly take so long to discover something this fundamental? With so many people taking these pills, there is a lot to talk about.

English Listening Practice: Serotonin Imbalance Does Not Cause DepressionAnti-depression medication affects the people who take it. Otherwise, why prescribe the drugs to so many people and for such long periods of time? People will tell you that anti-depressant pills have helped them, but whatever is going on medically is now being questioned by some heavyweight medical research from University College London. Of course, this ignores the elephant in the room, and that is the side effects of taking this type of mind-altering drug over long periods of time.

When I say a lot of people take these pills, I mean millions of people in Britain alone! The Lancet published data from NHS Digital showing that 70.9 million prescriptions for antidepressants were given out in England in 2018, compared with 36 million in 2008. No wonder the anti-depression pill market is booming. The global antidepressant drugs market in 2020 had a value of 15.6 Billion USD and they project it will reach 21 Billion USD by 2030. It?s a substantial business if you are one of the 5 major players that dominates this market.

Hi there. In today?s English speaking practice podcast, I?m going to look at two different parts of English fluency. Did you know that there are two types of fluency? Mental and physical. We are going to explain both types of fluency, and share with you some easy to do exercises that will help you improve both mental and physical fluency.

?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-practice-physical-fluency/
I?m often asked, what is being fluent in spoken English? What does it look like? I?d say that it looks like someone who can join in on an everyday English conversation with native English speakers. Where you can keep up with the comprehension speed necessary to stay in the conversation. And you can join in at any time to add your views. It?s getting your spoken English fluency to a level where your speaking is on autopilot.
To me, that?s what spoken English fluency looks like. A level of spoken English where you are not consciously thinking about translation and how to form words. Once you reach this level of proficiency with your English language, you can really focus on expressing your ideas and the content of what you want to say rather than the technical details of how to say it.
So working on your English fluency, until your ability to speak or write without hesitation or repetition, has to be a big part of your English learning. And working on both types of fluency is part of that. Mental fluency is the ability to think quickly and clearly and recall vocabulary and phrases as you need them. While physical fluency is the ability to move your mouth to achieve the correct sounds in a natural and effortless way. You need to work on both to achieve fluency.

It is a challenge when you are learning English for the first time, because you often look at books for the answers, but books often ignore the real world grammar use of native English speakers. Native English speakers have bad habits, native English speakers often bend English grammar rules, to sound cool, or communicate more quickly or just because that?s the way everyone expects to hear English spoken in 2022. Common grammar mistakes have infiltrated our communication so thoroughly that they are truly part of the language at this point.
Even if you think you know everything there is to know about English grammar, you?re wrong. The English language has incorporated and inherited a lot of grammatical oddities from a lot of languages from around the world. English grammar gets confusing even for us teachers. So if you are learning English as a second language, you will make mistakes with your English grammar. It?s inevitable. Accept this and don?t let the fear of sounding odd hold you back.
I?d also say that making grammatical errors when you speak is less problematic. If you are trying to communicate something and you make a few grammatical errors, the listener is almost certainly going to understand what you are saying. Getting spoken English grammar wrong just makes you sound a little clumsy, it highlights your a learner, and that may or may not be something you want.

It's hard to stay motivated when learning English. Adept English is here to help you learn by making English interesting, not boring. In this English listening practice lesson, we talk about one of the many things that makes the UK different from much of the world. The National Health Service, anyone in the UK, would call it the NHS. A system of health care that is free at the point of access for everyone in the UK. Sounds amazing, right? Who wouldn?t want free healthcare?
English Listening Practice Session-The UK National Health Service 2022?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-practice-nhs-2022/
Does that sound like the start of a boring English lesson? I hope not. That sounds like something you would listen to just because it?s interesting, right? We know the more interesting the lesson, the more you will learn. Traditional English lessons are notoriously boring, difficult to keep your eyes open boring! You won?t find that here with us. Interesting is as important as our great English language content. If you want to learn more and have fun doing it, subscribe to us and start listening now!
With the NHS, it?s not quite that simple. The UK spends more on the NHS than defence, education, transport, police, housing, environment, industry and agriculture. The NHS offers world leading care in some of its services, but in many, the real world experience is not world class. Even simple things are hard to get solved, and it can be a fight to get diagnosed and treated in the NHS in 2022.
Although this approach to national healthcare is much cheaper than most systems. It?s not cheap. It costs the UK an eye watering amount of taxpayer?s money every year. In 2007, the UK government?s annual spend was £587 billion pounds, and £111 billion of that, around 20% was on the NHS. More recently, in 2021, the UK government's annual spend was just over £1 trillion pounds, and nearly 20% of that was just on the NHS.

When learning to speak English clearly, tongue twisters are great practice. Tongue twisters will help you master the art of correct diction by exercising the intricate muscles in your mouth. This type of exercise forces you to slow down and think about how you are going to shape your mouth to achieve the sounds you need. Tongue twisters are difficult but can also be fun. If you're watching on YouTube or Spotify, then you also get to see me struggling to say them.
Techniques To Practice English Word Sounds?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-words-properly/
You use your mouth muscles to form the sounds needed for words. Normally, your brain is in autopilot mode. You don?t even think about what you need to do to create a word sound. This is great for your native language, but it can cause problems with a second language. With a new language, you need to achieve unfamiliar sounds that might not exist in your native language, or you will need to change sounds because spoken English needs this.
You can use Tongue twisters to train the muscles of your mouth, just like going to train at the gym. It helps you speak English more precisely, and it helps speed up how quickly you find the sounds you need to pronounce English words. Forcing yourself to say difficult word combinations in a new language does two things.
It forces you to switch off the autopilot and actually think about how you need to form your mouth muscles to achieve a sound. It helps you develop, literally build muscles in your mouth that you need to speak English. You won?t find it easy. Native speakers find these difficult, so practice until you can say these tongue twisters loudly and clearly. Have fun with it. This is a great way to improve your English speaking.

The ONS says that the average working person in the UK takes home £611 per week, or approximately £31,772 a year. Now the good news is this is the most it?s been in a long time. The bad news is the cost of essential items (things we need to live) mean that even this record average income is not enough to pay the bills and live a normal life in the UK.
We are paying almost twice what we used to for heating gas and electricity, taxes are the highest they?ve ever been, the cost of food is up, the cost of fuel is up, the cost of borrowing (Mortgages) is up, cost of transport, utilities like mobile phones, TV all up.

Authentic Everyday British Greetings - Hello English Speaking Practice?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-practice-hello-greetings/
When we start out using a new language, we lean on words and sometimes overuse them. They are safe words. We have a good understanding of these words and they get the job done. There is nothing wrong with this approach, but at some point you will want to move on to a more expressive and nuanced way of speaking, which takes into account who you are speaking to.
In today?s English speaking practice lesson, we take a very common event ?greeting someone?, and through examples we show many examples of how this might change depending on who you are talking to and your relationship with them, even what time of day may change what you choose to say.
I love meeting new people; I think everyone has a story to tell. We should all listen sometimes.I hope this podcast gives you the courage to move on from certain go to easy and safe words. It?s really important that once you have a solid grasp of one area that you take a risk and start experimenting with the richness of your speech and vocabulary choices.

Don't forget to check out our new English pronunciation course, a great way to improve your British English pronunciation.
To be honest, initially I was completely unaware of this trial. It was only when some of my clients asked me what my view was did I take it upon myself to find out more. I was hooked almost immediately. It?s amazing to have a deep look into the lives of two very wealthy and privileged people. To see the world as they see it, and to learn that they are as vulnerable to relationship problems as us normal people.
If you must break the law, do it to seize power: in all other cases observe it.I think there is a lot of interesting English vocabulary used in this podcast. Specifically, words you would find in a legal setting. It?s the type of vocabulary you would hear if you were watching legal or law and order TV dramas. I also think the trial shows some ideas like #metoo, as well meaning as they are, are being undermined by being overused. Lots of interesting conversation points to keep you engaged in your listening practice

To Speak English Well Your English Listening Skills Need To Be Really Good?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-practice-forest-bathing-walking/
You will find that a little bit of English listening each day goes a long way. Yes, even if you?re on your way to work, at the gym, cooking a meal, listen to this English language podcast every day and you?ll soon see that your knowledge and confidence with the English language will increase.
When you learned your first native language, all you did was listen and watch. You certainly read nothing and you certainly didn?t know about grammar or pronunciation or accents. You just had someone close to you sit down every day and talk, maybe play, and slowly your amazing brain built an understanding of language. After a lot of listening, you eventually practiced saying things, copying what you were hearing. If you were lucky, you also had someone spend a lot of time lovingly correcting you. Everyone on Earth goes through this process, and most of us are successful.
Now young children have some advantages when they are learning languages. Young brains are amazingly adaptable, building new neural networks at a crazy rate. But us oldies have some advantages as well. We already understand many of the lessons young children need to learn from nothing. Being older doesn?t mean this listening approach to learning a language is not possible, it just means we can be more efficient in our learning. So what?s your excuse? Start listening to the language you want to speak. Immerse yourself in the cadence, the pronunciation, the accents, the vocabulary you will need to know to speak this new language.

We have had some positive comments on the new video format. If you haven?t watched the new video version of the podcast, you can watch on Spotify and YouTube. We build the transcript into the videos, so you follow along as you listen. It?s a more sophisticated version of closed captions. You don?t need special software and we highlight each word as we speak it. It?s karaoke for language learners.
We have had some minor issues with the dual recording of video and audio, but mostly the move over to video and audio production has gone to plan. Let us know about your experience. We aim to keep the same great audio quality and English language learning content our podcast listeners expect.
I think each new version of the podcast is getting better and better, so hang on in there! If you spot a problem or have a suggestion, please help us by sending in an email or leave a comment on YouTube. We try to read and respond to them all. We really want to hear from you.

English language learners often struggle with the English grammar concept of conditionals. In this lesson, I?ll explain the 4 conditional types in a straightforward way, along with examples of each type and its use. As a bonus, there is even a quiz at the end of the lesson to check you have improved your understanding.
A Practical English Grammar Lesson To Help You Understand And Use Conditionals In English?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/esl-english-grammar-4-conditionals/
Given there are only 4 types of conditional, you would think it is a pretty simple topic. Just learn the 4 types and it?s done. But as we often find in English grammar, the devil is in the detail. There are so many potential use cases for conditional types you can feel overwhelmed.
So in this English podcast lesson, we start with making sure you understand the rules for each type. So you have the tools to understand any use of conditional you might come across. Even if you?ve never taken an English grammar class, you?ll be able to follow my logical explanations and examples.
Your grammar is a reflection of your image. Good or bad, you have made an impression. And like all impressions, you are in total control. You may notice this lesson is a Listen&Learn lesson. Gain Confidence In Your English Skills With Regular English Listening Practice?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-listening-practice-uk-vet-visit/
Talking about everyday topics, in a natural conversation, is a great way for you to learn about life in the UK, a little about me while you improve your English listening comprehension and pronunciation skills. Training your brain to listen and understand spoken English is a critical part of making the move to speaking English.
If you can listen and understand a conversation in real-time, without translation. Then that will free up a lot more time for your brain to plan and say what you need to say when it comes time to speak. We all acquire language using listening skills, the way you learned your first ?native? language as a baby. The better you are at listening, the easier it will be to speak English.
A quick note about our move to producing videos and audio podcasts. If you are a regular listener and notice some changes in the audio quality as we move over to video and audio production, don?t worry. I noticed them as well. Having perfected the production process for audio only podcasts, it?s been quite a learning experience to produce video. I think these recordings are better than the recordings last week, and next weeks will be even better. Thank you for your patience

In this video podcast, I will explain idioms with the English word ?leg? in them. English idioms are an odd part of the English language, and not knowing about them can catch English language learners out. The best way to deal with them is to focus on the popular ones, the ones you are more likely to hear in an everyday English conversation. Today I?m going to break each idiom down into understandable parts and give you lots of examples. There is even a quiz to test yourself at the end.

Now, before we get started, you should probably know a little more about the learning approach we use here at Adept English. There is a lot more going on when you listen to one of our podcasts. You can find out more about Listen and Learn on our website. We will help you learn consciously, and our Listen and Learn method will help you learn unconsciously too.
If you don?t listen/watch us on Spotify or YouTube, you probably don?t know it, but we have a new video studio. Behind the scenes, we have started video recording our lessons at the same time as we record the lesson audio. From a podcast listeners point of view, we hope very little has changed, lots of great English language learning content to listen to as you commute to work or go out jogging. For the people who can watch us. The enormous advantage of video is we can build the transcript right into display and deliver more value to our audience.
We still think of ourselves as podcast first and video second. But we have to move with the times and our audience, and one of our goals is to help as many people as possible learn to speak English. Making our content available on new platforms for new English learners has to include video. We are definitely learning as we go along. If you spot a problem or have a suggestion on how we can improve what we are doing, please let us know in the YouTube comments or via email, our email address is at the footer of every page on our website.

English has some words which sound similar when you say them, and can even have the same spelling, but have a different meaning. Today we are going to talk about homonyms in our English grammar lesson, what they are, and why they are problematic for new English language learners. As usual, we provide lots of English listening practice to help you spot them and avoid confusion when you communicate with people using them.
Homonyms Are A Part Of Speech That Many English Learners Struggle With?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/parts-of-speech-homonym/
Some of you may have noticed our first video podcast on Monday. The idea is to publish the same great English lesson you expect to listen to but also include video, and a better follow along transcription built into the video. It?s a new process for us and there are a lot of technical changes to getting the lesson published. We?ve had a lot of positive feedback, and if you have ideas, or problems, then please send us an email to tell us about your experience. If all goes well, we will publish video/audio podcasts from now on.
English grammar doesn?t need to be boring! There are lots of interesting things to learn about homonyms. Listening to this podcast several times will help your store what you learn in your longer term language memory. We recommend you use spaced repetition as part of your listening process. So once you?ve finished listening to the podcast, why not add a reminder with siri to play the podcast again in a few days, then maybe a week?s time. The next time you listen, think about what you didn?t remember, ask yourself why?
This lessons audio MP3 can be downloaded from our website, and you can get the full PDF transcript for free on the website as well. If you don?t fancy a lesson on grammar, we have lots of podcasts to choose from here.

Today?s English speaking practice lesson, the topic I?m going to talk about is the concept of empathy. An English Speaking Practice Lesson Focused On Empathy?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-practice-topic-empathy/
I really encourage you to think about adding "Listening Practice" to your English language learning routine. It?s a free and easy English language learning method that gives very good results.
So what is empathy? If you?re thinking, it sounds like an emotion, and that?s correct. Empathy is the ability to understand and share in another person?s feelings. If you want to connect with someone, see something of yourself in them. You understand them on an emotional level, and that?s called empathy.
Broadly speaking, the short words are the best, and the old words best of all. This is my first video podcast, and I?d love to hear what you think about it. How I can improve it? Leave comments on YouTube or send me an email. You can find contact details at the bottom of our website here

Modal verbs are everywhere! They are a big part of speech in the English language. Frankly, in English we use them so much that after a while they become invisible to us native speakers. Which is why we need to make them visible again. That?s what today's English podcast is all about. Start learning English grammar the easy way, through listening.
Parts Of Speech English Modal Verbs - Practice Using Them Correctly?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/parts-of-speech-english-modal-verbs/
If you are learning to speak English, you know modal verbs are an essential component of the structure of a language, because they enable us to carry out actions or show our attitude towards something. Something we will all want to do at some point in a conversation. But it can be quite difficult to understand when you come from another language.
So the modal verb ?could?, if used in conjunction with another verb, will change the meaning of the sentence. For example, in the sentence ?Billy could eat like a horse,? the modal verb ?could? is used alongside the verb ?eat? to change its meaning by implying that Billy has the capability to eat a lot.
As always, the best way to learn this type of verb modification is to hear them being used. So today we have lots and lots of practice sentences which walk you through how modal verbs can and should be used to bring your English conversations alive.

Learn English Language Listening Skills The Easy Way And Speak Confidently?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/learn-english-language-fluency/
The cost of living in the UK is going crazy. I?m sure it?s the same for you. Petrol per litre has gone from £1.15 to £1.76. My food shopping was about £100 a week for 3 people and 2 cats, now it?s about £145, for nearly the same things. My gas bill has gone up 3 times, and it?s now 85% more expensive, but we?ve used less to keep the costs down. It?s happening for everything though, my son?s computer chair broke (OK he broke it!) I tried to buy the same chair on Amazon, and it was nearly 50% more, and it?s only a year old.
Talking in English about interesting topics is a great way to improve your English listening and comprehension skills. Humans love a good story, and we have developed to keep this type of ?story? information in our longer term memory. The more relevant the story to our survival, the more likely we are to store the information. So our podcasts take advantage of this.
If you want to speak English fluently and confidently, you are going to need to listen to lots and lots of English being spoken by a fluent English speaker. Today we are going to look at a memorising technique that uses music. We are going to see how you can apply this powerful learning approach to making learning English vocabulary and phrases easier. Music is a fantastic way to get new vocabulary into your brain. It?s an easy way to improve your English vocabulary and fluency. This is a method that I have found to be really effective and at the end of the podcast, I discuss the facts that support why it works.
How Studying English Words And Phrases With Music Helps Me Remember?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/common-english-words-musical-memory/
You will often hear us talk about repeat listening and spaced repetition as the go to learning technique for improving your English language comprehension. But we don?t talk as much about techniques for learning English phrases and vocabulary. So in today?s English phrases and vocabulary lesson, we are going to talk about things you can do to help you with remembering lists of common English words, like the days of the month, days of the week, etc.
If you are new here, welcome! I?d like to mention that we have a principle here in Adept English, a principle of only learning useful English. The English you need to hold a fluent English conversation in the UK today. We avoid using dry old English books with vocabulary and phrases you just don?t hear being used in everyday English conversations.
Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere. We are all busy people, and our time is precious. We want you to be efficient and spend your English learning time as effectively as possible. It?s why we have a course which helps you focus on the 500 most common English words, which make up around 80% of all the words you would use in a conversation with just about anyone right here in the UK today.
The point is, you learn the vocabulary you need first and then move on to specialist vocabulary. You don?t learn about English vocabulary for flying a plane if you?re only ever going to work in a hotel or drive a taxi. You might want to learn plane specific vocabulary eventually, but you would definitely want to learn the 500 most common words first. And then learn hotel or taxi specific vocabulary and then finally you're going to invest the time in learning about planes.

Today we are going to look at the differences between British English and American English pronunciation. Do you really want to sound more like James Bond, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Daniel Craig than a mix of Bill Murray, President Obama, and Ben Stiller? If you want to sound more British when you speak, rather than American, then this podcast will share some secrets that will help you understand why we sound the way we do.
Learn What English Accent You Have As We Talk About The Differences Between British & American Accents?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/practise-english-pronunciation-british-vs-american-accent/
Of course, there are many wonderful British accents, and there are a lot of lovely American accents as well. I?m going to give this lesson using my accent. I would class my accent as contemporary received pronunciation RP, which is just a way of saying I speak using an accent you would hear in and around London and the South East of England.
My accent is a clear and correctly spoken accent, so it?s a good place for ESL (English as a second language) learners to start. It?s the sort of accent you would want for your spoken English to be understood around the world. If you want to sound Scottish or Welsh or Irish, or want one of the many lovely regional accents to be found in the UK, then this probably isn?t the lesson for you.
I know I say this a lot, but I think it?s important. Ultimately, having an accent when you speak English should not matter. But accents, especially strong ones, can sometimes impede people understanding what you say. As a new language learner, you probably don?t want any additional barriers to being understood. You will definitely adopt the accent from your English language teacher, and it won?t be easy to correct later on. So knowing that should help you make a more informed decision about what accent your language teacher has, and whether that matters to you

We use the same proven approach you used for your first language to help you learn new languages. One of the most important aspects of this type of learning is lots of repeat listening. Most people will only listen to something several times if it?s interesting. So all of our listen and learn podcasts are about interesting things.
Being self aware is a very good first step to reducing unnecessary stress and anxiety. Learning English Speaking Fluency In A Month? Are You Kidding Me??Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/english-speaking-takes-how-long-to-learn/
I?ve noticed recently a trend on the internet/social media and YouTube for people to make claims about learning to speak a language that is just impractical. Being a language learner myself and being told that some people are learning to speak a new language fluently in a single month is just frustrating. Most, and by that I mean 99%, of us won?t be learning a new language to fluency in a month.
Why do these claims of learning a new language to fluency in a month seem exaggerated? Well, take this example, the US military spends millions of dollars using the best techniques and experts in language learning in the world. This US military programme per-selects only people who show an inbuilt skill will learn language learning. Guess what? It still takes students on this ultra specialist, elite, best of the best US Military program longer than a month.
You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.I?m not saying learning a new language from nothing to fluency in less than a month is impossible. I?ve just have not met anyone who has done it, and I know a few polyglots who specialize in language acquisition.

Do you ever stop listening to someone while they?re speaking because you?re too busy translating what they said? You are not alone! Lots of English language learners fall into the trap of language translation. The good news is you can learn to stop that slow translating process and move to true spoken English fluency with the strategies I set out in this English podcast lesson.
Stop Translating In Your Head Level Up Your English Language Fluency?Lesson transcript: https://adeptenglish.com/lessons/learn-english-conversation-fluency/
I know, it?s frustrating! We all start out with translation, but translation prevents fluency! It seems counter-intuitive that the only way to learn a new language is to build a vocabulary and to do that you need to translate, but in doing this we prevent ourselves from becoming better the more we translate!
There is nothing wrong with this at the start of your language learning journey. The problem happens when you think scaling this skill up is the right way to continue getting better at English fluency.
Language is wine upon the lips. The best way to think about this is to imagine your early English language vocabulary as a set of tools you need to get your language learning started. Imagine that these tools help you build a bridge, but once you finish the bridge, you need to put the tools down and stop using them. Your focus should now be on using the bridge you?ve built.
