With help from SLASH, EDDIE VAN HALEN, STEVE VAI and, believe it or not, SAMMY DAVIS Jr. as well as MICHAEL LANDAU, EDGAR WINTER, and his own son, TREVOR LUKATHER, the great STEVE LUKATHER has released the ultimate guitar-heavy holiday album: SANTAMENTAL, which features inspired re-imaginings of Christmas carols and other holiday staples — plus a couple of original tunes! — performed by Luke and his all-star cast. Actually, the album was originally released in 2003, but soon became “unobtainium” when it fell out of print. But starting today, thanks to Tossed Salad Man Records/MRI, SANTAMENTAL is back, and you can hear the record on digital streaming services. Better yet, you can “buy physical.” That’s right: CD and vinyl versions of SANTAMENTAL are available on stevelukather.com, and all artist proceeds — digital and physical — go to help the Ed Asner Family Center, which helps neurodivergent children thrive. Always up for a new guitar adventure, for this interview I “landed the ‘copter” on a busy Los Angeles street and set up the mics in a setting, that, in my 11 years of podcasting, I’ve never braved before: a crowded restaurant. This “lunch with Luke” episode is an extensive, deep, and — as is always the case with Lukather — wonderfully uncensored hang, as you'd expect the case to be with famously unfiltered solo artist, superhero session king and lead guitarist of TOTO and RINGO STARR, and we cover many, many topics and enjoy many laughs. In fact, it’s more than a half an hour in before we, in great detail, begin diving into SANTAMENTAL. Enjoy! And please join me in thanking Guitar Player and GuitarPlayer.com for making this interview happen.
